It was next to nothing but a nice place to stroll around a lake and feed the ducks. This summer when my daughter and grandson came to town they requested that we forego our annual trip to the Louisville Zoo and give the Salato Wildlife Education Center a try. We went there and my expectations were extremely low. I was pleasantly surprised at the changes that occurred since I was here last. The small museum utilizes every nook and cranny with exhibits It is very informative yet fun for all. Then after making the circle through the museum we exited the rear door to the outside and began our leisurely stroll down paths and around loops to see all the live wildlife. Even though there were multiple families visiting at the same time the grounds absorbed the people so you didn't feel like you were in a crowd. There are many opportunities for kids to have a hands on feel for the subject matters. So the $5. for adults and the $3. for kids was well worth our afternoon visit to the center. Woohoo, I'll be back on my own just to walk the grounds again.

We have…read moredone summer camps before and this was our first time at Pepperhill and I chose them because they offered swimming, fishing, horseback riding, archery, and games. They have a camp video on their website and it showed the children having an amazing time. That being said, I was disappointed. This camp is expensive and I did not feel I got my money's worth *pay attention to the NO REFUND policy*. My 9yr old was a "junior" and loved Pepperhill. They had activities and swimming scheduled every day. My 12yr old was a "grad" and they are granted more freedom to pick and choose what they want to do during the day because they are older; they also went on field trips. My 12yr old spent most of the day helping the younger campers or doing chores around the camp. As a parent, that didn't upset me because it teaches them responsibility. What did upset me was that I was paying MUCH MORE for my child to do what I felt the counselors should be doing. Now, the tuition for a "grad" is more because they go on field trips (movies, skating) and BIG trips (Holiday World in Indiana), but you are not eligible to attend the BIG trips unless you enroll in all three weeks of the session. Pay attention to this because when I enrolled I was very excited for my child to get a chance to do white water rafting, but because we had a family memorial and did not enroll in one of the weeks, they were not eligible for the BIG trip that session, even though we attended the other two weeks. I will not be sending my children back to this camp based on the fact they are way too expensive and and I did not feel I got my money's worth.

But one is reminded of all the splendid Kentucky countryside that is privately owned; it's nice that this is open to the public. A couple of trails run through mildly hilly forest and around a pond. There weren't the sorts of spectacular views you'd expect from a major park, but it's nice hiking and the trails were quite well maintained. A climate controlled bird blind overlooks a pond near the parking area. There was no charge to get in and no one else in sight other than a few deer with winter coats when I dropped by.

Our outdoor play group did a meet up here and was going to do the white and blue trails. But we got…read moreliterally 100 yards into the path and discovered HUNDREDS of baby ticks on all 10 members (including the kids). A few of our members were removing ticks for over 30 minutes. We stayed on the trail the whole time. And we all had bug spray on. We understand nature is nature but this is just unacceptable for an kept trail recommended for families and a place that host events. We will only do this in the winter from now on.

The facilities are great. I use the weight room and they have everything I need. Staff are…read morefriendly. However, there are a few continuing problems. 1. The weights in the weight room are never, ever, ever sorted into their correctly labeled spots (you can only blame other patrons up to a certain point--then you have to start asking why the staff aren't enforcing a sorting rule or sorting them themselves). 2. The wifi is spotty. 3. When equipment breaks, repairs take forever. One of the selectorized weight machines had a weight that stuck for months and months after I politely mentioned it to staff multiple times. 4. The men's bathroom by the weight room often has a very strong urine smell and the hinge on the stall door is not dependable. And handle on the sink in there has been broken for weeks. 5. The second hand on one of the wall clocks in the weight room is broken, and has been for a long time, which is frustrating if you want to time a lifting rest. (It's a small thing, but it's the kind of thing staff should handle without having to be asked by their customers. Plus, who wants to be "that guy" who asks them to fix their clock? I already asked once--now I'd rather use up my political capital asking about the wifi.) 6. Any time you have to do ANYTHING in the office, it takes forever. Reception and basic bookkeeping tasks move at a snail's pace. Again, all the staff are very nice, and overall things are not bad. However, there are some continual/recurring (and frustrating) problems that appear to be a lack of proper management.
