Then as you walk around the store, you can see pottery at all stages of its production. Bonus for me: the day I was there, Kevin was talking to his high school art teacher who inspired him to go into this field. It was so nice to see the mentor/mentee relationship, and from their conversation is sounds like Kevin is paying this forward with some youngins. The pottery is lovely, but the best places are all about the people behind the art, and Barnstable Pottery is one of those places.

Now I, being a fan, enthusiast and novice artist myself always have a special place in my heart for a pottery studio. When I walked in with my two partners in crime, we found the studio owner sitting at one of 4 wheels trimming pieces and enjoying the wonderful sunny day. There was a basset hound lounging on the floor and a charming woman keeping him company. Walking in you are immediately at ease, listening to the fountain made of thrown pieces and other parts as it playfully blows to each part. There are combination pieces making castles of all sizes in addition to other functional pieces. Mugs, vases, bowls, other little jars and containers. The castles themselves were impressive and obviously he has a considerable amount of time vested in each. I had even seen a bowl I was sure was hand build slab work but low and behold it was a huge, shallow bowl that had obvious signs of thrown work. There were even small oil lamps he had thrown and built. I almost regret not purchasing anything. Then we got to talking. He was welcoming and laid back almost as you would expect anyone to be who enjoys cape life. He was full of knowledge about all sorts of other things and even directed us to great lunch spots and a coffee house he raved about in the village. We had to have chatted for over an hour while admiring the style of his art that surrounded us. As we were hurrying out the door to get to the coffee shop before it close, we promised to be back. And next time I am NOT leaving empty handed.

I ended up with a 60 minute massage but I didn't mind because I figured they would be running late for the rest of the day if they honored the 90 minutes. However, they tried to charge me for 90 minutes just hoping I'd let it go- I couldn't believe it. I was so disappointed with how the owner handled this. I will not return.

As for the experience itself, it was quite pleasant! The atmosphere of the institute is well cultivated, warm and welcoming with a comfortable waiting area, friendly and cheerful staff, and the massage rooms are similarly comfortable and relaxing. I have never gotten a professional massage before so I cannot compare it to a massage by a student, but overall it was relaxing and enjoyable. The student was very friendly and seemed to have gone over the form I filled out regarding preferences in my massage- the only mistake she made was I indicated pain in my left shoulder blade, and she instead focused on my right shoulder blade throughout the massage. I could have mentioned it but I was in far too much of a relaxed daze to bother, and overall it was not a big deal. After my massage I had to wait for an hour while my friend who I came with got hers, and they let me doze on their waiting room couch. I heard and saw many staff and what seemed like regular patients come in and out, everyone seemed happy, content, and generally in a great mood. Finally, while the massage session itself was great experience, in the days after I did not feel like the regular aches and pains in my back and shoulders had lessened. This could have been due to a variety of reasons. There is a disclaimer on the forms you sign that states all students are in different stages of study, which may have had something to do with it. Overall I would recommend this institute as a cheaper alternative to a professional massage, though be aware you will not have the same results as a professional massage.
