Yellow Yellowtail Ceviche - yum!
Grace N.

Not sure why this place has only 3 stars, but we ordered from here today and food was so good! I got shrimp tacos and yellowtails ceviche. Now, if I do my due diligent and read the description I would've known that their shrimp tacos is grilled on plancha with also grilled caramelized cheese over the blue corn tortilla. I was more in the mood for a cleaner and fresher shrimp tacos, the normal kinds with just cabbage and pico de gallos inside the tacos because think Capa's version is about 800 calories more than the one I had in mind . But it was delicious though. My only complaint is their red sauce or red salsa, it looks fire but it was NOT spicy at all.. wth. But, the main star is the yellowtail ceviche. It's marinated in coconut milk, which they called coconut leche de Tigre (coconut tiger milk?! lol). It also has mango and lots of lime, cilantro and onion and all that other good stuff that makes such a great ceviche. This was sooooo good and their chunky pieces of yellowtail were so big! This was a hit! Lastly the tortillas chips they gave with it has such a refreshing lime and very light chili salt on it, and the chip is thin and so crisp, it was so good! Overall very happy with the food here!

Sweet potato tacos
Melanie G.

Decent tacos for a food stall in a food hall. Went on a Saturday around 12 and food came out in under 10m. 2 tacos for around $11.50 is pretty average nowadays and especially not bad for a food hall I got the sweet potato tacos. It comes on blue corn tortillas and your choice of mild, medium or hot salsa. I got the mild salsa verde which was tasty and cut through the heaviness of the taco. I wish the sweet potato was cubed rather than smashed because it was very heavy. There was also a bit too much cheese for my liking and/or it could've been melted more but it did add good flavor. I probably would've enjoyed it more if i was a bit hungrier but not a bad meal at all!

Burnt ends brisket burrito "mission style"
Spencer S.

Within the Rodeo River Street food hall. Gated paid parking lot. Walking distance from train station if that helps you plan. Order at the register, they take your phone number, and you get a text when your order is ready. Took around 10 mins on a busy weekend for us. Casual atmosphere with a ton of shared indoor and outdoor seating. They've got a brisket burrito, which I had to try! If you want all the fixings, you're going to have to add-on "mission style" for more money (guac, rice, beans, pico de gallo). Crazy taste combo of bbq and Mexican, but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless! Generous serving size, which I expect when paying nearly $20 as of March 2025.

Shrimp Taco, Quesa Birria (Brisket) taco, Shrimp Ceviche

tacos were pretty heavy but still good! i liked the shrimp one the most but the quesa birria was also quite yummy. ceviche not so good, the shrimp was cut really bad. we got some huge pieces of shrimp and some tiny ones. def not consistent and would NOT order that again service sucked too. the person handing me the order didnt even acknowledge or look at me, just was talking to her friend and pushed the bag towards me without looking.. what is with the customer service nowadays? i know the younger generation gets a bad rap for customer service but im also a gen z and i had better service when i worked a min wage food job back in college :/ the tacos were good but would probably not come back bc the customer service needs way more improvement

Beans and yellow tail ceviche

Capas located in the rodeo food hall in Sjc. Cool location and set up. Wish it was bigger with more seating though. The food for the yellowtail ceviche. Very interesting how it was served like prepackaged but it was still decent. Fish was cut way too big for my liking though. Tasted fresh but it was Just a different take that wasn't up my alley . Beans was pretty good. Almost like beans and hummus. We all did enjoy this if you like beans

I honestly don't know why this place is sitting at 3 stars because everything we tried was DELICIOUS. I would go back just for their Birria burrito and the coconut shrimp ceviche. Both were packed with flavor and so satisfying. The location is super cute too. It sits in a little lifestyle center that's fun to stroll around and makes the whole experience feel extra cozy. Capas also just rolled out a new seasonal menu and there are so many great options to choose from. What I loved most is that they don't skimp. The tacos are LOADED with toppings and meat, exactly how they should be. I'm honestly tired of other taco spots in OC serving "cute" tiny tacos with barely anything inside. Capas goes all out and delivers big flavor every time. Went on a weekday and it was pretty mellow and quick service - we got the food rather quickly. If you want a little lightweight taco, this might not be for you... but honestly, you'd be missing out. I'll definitely be back!

Carnitas tacos

We visited the new Rodeo River Street in San Juan Capistrano and we tried a couple different places. This was our favorite of all the places we tried. Pros: the tacos come with a great portion of meat, the guacamole was very good and my kids loved the purple tortilla chips, and the smoked brisket, carnitas and birria meats were tasty Cons: the salsas were a bit of a let down (they missed the mark on heat - they actually tasted kind of sweet), the birria tacos didn't come with a consume so that was a let down, the drink options are pretty limited (I couldn't find any restaurant in the strip mall with plain old unsweetened iced tea) The staff were nice (it was opening weekend so they were very busy). The whole river walk is walk up food options but you can find lots of seating outside which is nice.

Olivia is so sweet and she helped me pick out something that was not too spicy and no cheese and no red meat. She gets all 5 stars. I ordered the shrimp à la Plancha tacos and the yellowtail ceviche. The chips are sooo good! Make sure you eat the ceviche the same day. Come and check it out ASAP

Yellowtail ceviche

I love ceviche and tacos. Unfortunately, this spot doesn't quite hit the mark and taste authentic. I love seeing a new food hall open in South OC (it looks like the same people behind Rodeo 39; the parking to get here is nuts so just pay to avoid the madness or long walk). You order at the counter and get texted when it's ready. There are plenty of seats indoors and outdoors (at least on a Friday lunchtime). I got the yellowtail ceviche where you get plenty of chips. The fish is fine. I understand it's leche de tigre (which is a bit less spicy than typical ceviches), but it's really missing on the heat and sour citrus flavor you expect. If those 2 components were amped up, this would be a better dish. I also got the carnitas tacos with melted cheese which were fine. I got the medium salsa which tasted more like a BBQ or ketchup sauce; it was a bit too sweet and could have used more Mexican flavors like peppers and cilantro. A few tweaks to amp up the flavors and heat would improve the dishes and make it taste more autentico.

Comote y queso
Miranda P.

I thought this place was pretty good. We ordered a cheese quesadilla for our kids, the burnt tips burrito, and comote y queso (potatoes piled with guacamole and cheese), and chips with guacamole. The burrito seemed like a black bean wrap. Not much meat at all and pretty small. I overheard someone else who ordered this telling the cashier they were given the wrong thing. I think the name and description is misleading, but what it was tasted good. The comote y queso was also good, though some potatoes were cooked to perfection while others were maybe undercooked. But overall, the flavor was good and portion was filling. The cheese quesadilla was probably the best thing, surprisingly. Came out hot and had good flavor. The chips were overly salted and guac was kinda like a mix of green salad and avocado. Not the best.

Fried Chicken burrito
Sherry N.

The food was not great..... there was barely any meat in the two burritos we got. Also no one to take order or even ask any questions. I would never ever go back. Save your money and goto Taco Bell!

Greg F.

Best carnitas tacos ever had. Tacos were packed with crispy carnitas with lots of bbq smoked flavor, the blue corn tortilla had lots of flavor as well The nachos were a tasty to, I ordered chicken as the protein and it tasted like a crunchy chicken enchilada So good, will Be back

Corn bread squares. Not sure the exact name but that doesn't matter because they're little squares of delicious.

There was a little bit of a line but line moved fast, waiting for the food is what takes the longest. After you order at the food counter, you wait for your number to be called. Once called, you get all your items and you can order drinks if you want to. We were hungry so we over ordered. This is what we had: 1. Pozole: the soup was so tasty! They provide you with a small container of dry red peppers and oregano. Use it. It gives a nice kick to the soup. The meat was tender and the homini perfectly cooked. The ratio of homini to meat was just right. 2. Pork tamal: the masa was not the best I've had but it was still tasty. I like my pork tamales to have chunks of meat but the one I got was more like a meat mush. 3. Lengua plate: delicious! Came with a side of rice and beans. 4. Cabeza tacos: needed a little salt but cabeza usually does. The meat was very good. Try them with the green salsa. 5. Carnitas tacos: if you like different textures, get it mixed (cuero included). The mix of different parts of the pig is a lot tastier than regular maciza meat. 6. Drinks: horchata and Jamaica. No package drinks here. Horchata tasted home made and Jamaica was solid. Two of the adults had regular coke from the soda fountain (nothing special). 7. Dessert: flan and arroz con leche. Both very delicious and not overly sweet. Desserts can be paid for in the bakery area so no wait here. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of any of the food we ordered. We were so hungry that we started eating right away. The best part of this place was the affordable prices. For everything we ordered we paid ~$70. Not bad considering we had a lot of food, drinks, and desserts. There's counter siting available inside and some tables outside. Bathroom is on premises but I didn't go in so I'm not sure how clean it was or if it was gender neutral.

The store is split between savory and sweet. I ordered a few tacos (carnitas, cabeza, and lengua). The full size tacos are quite large and filling. I have to remember to order the street taco version. The flavor is good and with the salsa it hits the spot. I also ordered the menudo to dip my tacos in. Paired the food with some horchata and agua fresca. The service can be a bit slow, maybe because it is usually busy. One thing to note is that you will need to order the drink with your savory order but pick up is on the other side with the sweets.

As a local gringo, sure--I wouldn't mind a few pictures on the menu--but honestly, it doesn't matter. Just pick something and go for it. It's incredibly important to support places like this, especially in South Orange County and particularly in San Juan Capistrano. Restaurants like this are what give the area its character. That kind of nickel-and-diming really takes away from the experience. For a lunch spot in San Juan Capistrano, the food is also overpriced for what you get. The quality and portions just don't justify the cost. See the attached bill--the upcharges alone were nearly a third of the total. Two enchiladas and chips came out to about $35 before tip, which just isn't reasonable for lunch. Well, at least they didn't add a 3% credit card fee... maybe that's coming next. Overall, El Maguey Mexican Restaurant missed the mark on both value and customer experience. Unfortunately, we won't be back anytime soon.
