Caparzo is a well known producer of excellent Montalcino wines, available all over the US. So it was a natural when we visited Montalcino and found it was so nearby, that we had to visit. It is a little off the beaten path, down some dusty roads north of the town of Montalcino. The approach was a number of narrow, cypress-lined lanes, leaving us to hope we didnt meet any trucks! We were too late to get a tour the first day, so we tasted some excellent brunellos and made an appointment for a tour the next day. Upon arriving, a young woman, who must be their best English speaker, was awaiting to charm us with her knowledge of this family owned and run winery. All the wine is produced from their locally grown Sangiovese grapes (the olive oil comes mostly from some farms north of Firenze). We got to see the presses, the casks for aging, the bottling and the finished products, again tasting. This time we knew what we wanted and purchased a bunch to be shipped to our home.It arrived within a few weeks of our order, very reasonably priced. This is a tour well worth it for wine-lovers. No two wineries are the same, so it is always a treat to see where some of these wines come from. read more
