Best wine-tasting we have experienced; we learned a lot and had fun. Two other people joined our session, for a total of four. The gentleman who guided us clearly has a passion for wine and for Uccelliera, having made a career change to join the winery. (I wish I could recall his name; he was wonderful and was much more than simply a guide for the winery.) During the tour he introduced us to Andrea, the owner of the winery. Over the course of 60 to 90 minutes we sampled 11 wines, including 2 or 3 straight from large barrels. Our guide skillfully explained the nuances of the different wines, their terroirs, their vintages, the traits of the Sangiovese grape relative to the local terroir, and more. He also described the history of the winery, and fully and directly answered our diverse questions. Very professional operation. Tips were not accepted. Cost of tasting was 15 Euros - worth every centime. The tasting also included bread with delicious olive oil. The winery grounds are very pretty. We used (off-line) Google Maps to guide us there. The final hundred or so yards are a non-paved narrow road that leads to a few stone buildings. We saw no one when we drove up so thought we might have made a navigation error. Then the wife of the owner came out and greeted us, guiding us to the right location. Very pleasant conversation. TIP: Cellphone coverage is spotty, so if using a mobile navigation app one is advised to download an off-line map of the area.

The guide was very knowledgeable and was able to answer questions about the wine making process as well as the varietals used including the making of Vin Santo. Excellent introduction to their wines, with a spectrum of wines. The person pouring the wines was very knowledgeable about the wines and grapes. He introduced us to a rosé produced from their brunello method that was outstanding and unique. We had 6 wines shipped home.

I visited Italy via a group called AHI travel. They coordinated the visit with about 20 participants. The tour began with a viewing of the wine cellar, wine barrels, bottling room and ended in the tasting room, a nice lodge-like area. We were able to taste 3 wines, including their famous Brunello and my favorite, the Alte d'Altesi, and indulge in a beautiful spread of bruschetta, prosciutto, pecorina cheese and olive oil. Their olive oil was also made on the property and available for sale. I ended up purchasing a bottle of wine and small container of olive oil so I could continue to enjoy my experience when I returned to New York. Altesino's had great products and inviting hospitality. I would note, if you are visiting on your own the drive up the curvy hills could be intimidating!

Since the winery was quite small and there were only two of us, we finished the tour pretty quick. We then went on to our wine tasting areas. It was a spacious and cosy room but nothing fancy. We tried Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG & Super Tuscan IGT. We ended up buying the Brunello and Brunello Gold for 25 and 50 Euro each. She was kind enough to waive the tour and tasting fee for us.

Most of their wines are over 90 point and extremely pricey and after tasting 3 additional wines, we left. We didn't bother to do the wine tour since we didn't enjoy the tasting. It was worth a visit because this was by far the most lavish tasting room we encountered in our 3 days in Tuscany.

Anyone that visits Montalcino will find themselves in wine heaven. An organic, biodynamic microwinery... Piombaia. They still make their wine the old fashioned way. Hand-selected grapes, manual wine press, bottling, etc. With a production of only around 8,000 bottles a year, it is truly a small, family operation. And the wine? Oh, the wine! From their signature Brunello to their Gatto Nero, it is all absolutely fantastic. Whatever you do, call ahead. It is not the kind of place with a manned store. This is a home, so reservations are a very good idea here.
