I visited Italy via a group called AHI travel. They coordinated the visit with about 20 participants. The tour began with a viewing of the wine cellar, wine barrels, bottling room and ended in the tasting room, a nice lodge-like area. We were able to taste 3 wines, including their famous Brunello and my favorite, the Alte d'Altesi, and indulge in a beautiful spread of bruschetta, prosciutto, pecorina cheese and olive oil. Their olive oil was also made on the property and available for sale. I ended up purchasing a bottle of wine and small container of olive oil so I could continue to enjoy my experience when I returned to New York. Altesino's had great products and inviting hospitality. I would note, if you are visiting on your own the drive up the curvy hills could be intimidating!

When we arrived, our tour guide took us to their wine making room. She was very friendly and spoke fluent English. Unfortunately, it was a public holiday so there was nobody around the working area. Since the winery was quite small and there were only two of us, we finished the tour pretty quick. We then went on to our wine tasting areas. It was a spacious and cosy room but nothing fancy. We tried Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG & Super Tuscan IGT. We ended up buying the Brunello and Brunello Gold for 25 and 50 Euro each. She was kind enough to waive the tour and tasting fee for us.

We met the owner who spoke very little English but his beautiful and brilliant daughter helped us bridge the language gap for the tasting. The wine was exceptional and we bought two bottles at a very reasonable price. This is a authentic small winery for the true Italian family experience. Don't miss this gem if you are in the area.

We were welcomed right away by Susana, the owner, who led us to the cantina. After a very warm welcome she led my wife and I down to the winery. Since this was our first time ever in a winery she explained the whole process in italian while my wife translated for me. It is inspiring to meet people with passion and love for what they do like the owners of this place. She offered us cheese and cold cuts while we tried the delicious wine and amazing olive oil. Needless to say we walked away with bottles of each but never felt pressured to buy, even though who wouldn't after trying their wonderful products. Do yourself a favor and make the drive, the city center is not that far away and you will fall in love with the place.

One of the larger producers of Brunello di Montalcino in Montalcino, Caparzo grapes are entirely grown on the premise of the estate. Started in the 1970's, the winery was bought by the current owner in the late '90s and expanded to the current production of approximately one million bottles a year. Of that, approximately 200,000 are Brunello di Montalcino. As the estate is very large there are multiple locations in which grapes are grown on the estate, however, Caparzo has one single site bottling produced every year. The tour is insightful. The technology is amazing in this state of the art facility. The wine is even better. Our tasting included eight wines from Montalcino (Caparzo owns wineries outside of Montalcino so it is possible to taste wines from other regions). The Montalcinos tasted ranged from a Rosso di Montalcino to a Riserva Brunello di Montalcino. All are excellent in their own rite. The location is spectacular - nestled in the Tuscan hills at about 300 meters above sea level. Rolling meadows and rows of grape vines. With over 250 vineyards in close proximity, Caparzo can easily be a part of a multi-site tour in one day. Go and ship some wine home to yourself. You'll enjoy it back home.
