Been here multiple times and each time, we all enjoyed ourselves. There are plenty of walls to choose from, both assisted and not, as well various difficulty levels. The kids loved climbing. It depends significantly on the time of day you get there because it can be incredibly busy; we went on a Friday, as soon as it opened. The staff is very helpful and I felt their brief training on how to use the equipment was sufficient. Every time we've visited, we were met with friendly employees, a good variety of climbing routes, and a fun atmosphere!!

Very cool spot. Patient employees willing to help my son and his friends (13) understand the ropes (literally) and answer any questions. Very clean and organized. There are all different levels, easy to very difficult. There was an arch even where you go upside down (more for the pros) and the whole place was really neat looking. There are amateurs and even national climbing teams there so it def has something for everyone. When we were there I spoke to two employees who both explained that they have national teams that train there and while we were there we saw a couple of them with trainers. Very cool to watch. My son fell at one point because he didn't understand that only the black ropes are "auto" and got them mixed up and it wasn't a big fall but it scared him and he got a couple rope burns. The staff was quick to make sure he was ok, told him to take a break and come back to it etc. he was back at it and learned a lesson quickly. His friends also had a blast. LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN. It's unsafe unless you personally supervise everything your kid does. I worked a camp for 3 yrs w lots of climbing, so I'm familiar with climbing safety, especially with kids. Canyons doesn't adequately practice harness safety, anchoring, belaying or communication. HARNESS SAFETY: I brought my kid to a class. While I was doing the paperwork they gave me, the staff put a harness on my child and left the leg straps gaping - like I could fit my whole shoulder in the extra space. Then they let her go up the wall, leg straps flapping - she was 25 feet up before I caught it (doing paperwork). When I pointed it out the teenage staffer brushed it off and said the waist strap is what really matters, and if the legs are loose it's fine. Seriously??? Why do you think you have leg straps? I consistently saw them outfit kids for the class without tightening leg straps AT ALL. Parents either aren't educated in climbing safety or weren't present. BELAYING: They teach kids as young as 8 to belay. Instruction is about 5 minutes, and then there is very little supervision afterwards. They teach them ZERO climbing communication (there is no, "climbing, climb on, on belay, belay on") and tell them they don't have to anchor-in while belaying unless the person climbing is bigger than them (also unsafe for kids who are poor judges of this and if person falls it can still jerk you forward if you're not anchored to the ground). The kids are poorly trained and I saw kids who were belaying frequently take both hands off the rope. Canyons relies entirely on their auto-locking belay device (which does seem to work well), and keeps their staff requirements low by having kids belay each other. GENERAL POOR ATTENTION TO SAFETY: They encourage kids to jump off the top of the bouldering wall instead of climbing back down (which is clearly against the rules that are posted on the wall), don't prevent kids from bouldering directly below each other (dangerous if there is a fall), they don't stop kids walking beneath active climbers, they don't stop kids from kicking the belay devices (which are expensive and can get hairline cracks), don't stop kids from treating the anchored belay ropes as a hammock... you get the idea. SUMMARY: If you are just getting a membership and climbing on your own, or helping your kids yourself it might be fine (although their lack of attention to safety does make me question how careful they are setting up equipment). If you take a class, I would watch your kid with an eagle eye, and always make sure you put their harness on yourself. And FYI, the "class" is just a pack of kids being herded around the gym - no real climbing instruction. If they fired all the staff and rehired some folks who actually care, that'd be a step in the right direction, but since all the staff seem equally apathetic about safety, I'm guessing they were never taught proper safety techniques by the management. read more

The place itself is pretty cool--lots of different types of walls to climb! We bought groupons, and you can't beat that price ($7 each including gear). However, the staff was EXTREMELY rude! One of them got an attitude with my 53 year old mother because she was having a difficult time operating the rope pulley thing. The young staff there seems to think that they are too cool to help you with anything. Also, a good bit of the climbing courses were unavailable because they were letting kids play on a giant swing in that area. It's cool, but should you really be blocking people from climbing so that people can swing? I don't know. read more

The staff was very helpful and it was a great experience! We went for the first time and discovered that it wasn't much more for a monthly membership so we took advantage of that! Canyons!!!! Such a great place to rock climb! I love this gym, it's a wonderful place for beginners as well as competitive climbers. The routes change every few months so there is always a challenging climb when I go. The facility is well organized and the staff here are very friendly and helpful. The price for student, kids, and adult memberships vary but each member can bring a guest when they come. The membership is on a month to month basis and they have harnesses and shoes to use without a rental fee. There is a bouldering wall, speed climbing wall, and regular climbing walls. The courses vary in difficulty. I would suggest coming with another person or a few other people as some courses are not self belay. This is also a great place to host a birthday party, take someone on an adventurous + active date, or just to sharpen your climbing skills! I would definitely consider myself a rookie climber, and this is only one of two different climbing gyms I've been to. This one has immensely high ceilings, and compared to the other place I've climbed, routes rated with the same difficulty definitely felt harder (in a good way). You get really high up there on the lead climbing routes, which was intimidating at first, but made for a super fun challenge. There were a lot of experienced climbers there when I was there, and it was fun to watch them swinging away from the walls and doing otherwise crazy-looking things that I'm nowhere near skilled enough to try. There were a couple of sections that were closed off. There seemed to be fewer beginner-level routes, which was fine, and I suppose if you're great at climbing this would be a good place to go. So disappointed. I'm new to TX, looking for recreation/exercise, and was glad to find this place on Groupon so I could finally give rock-climbing a try. Excitedly, I took the trek to this location, and the front desk employee told me I would not be able to use the Groupon because I'd come alone. Seriously? Again, I'm new here and don't know anyone for such a venture, AND there's nothing on the purchase site that says a buddy system is required. How would a novice rock climber guess this? The location's in the middle of nowhere (amidst an array of sunflower fields, to my friends' delight). But being removed from Dallas added even more to the experience. There are quite a few walls with different levels of difficulty. One even required you to do some upside down Spidey action! Also, the climbing crowd ranged from little kids to intense manly men. The service was nice enough. An employee gave us our harnesses, gave a quick lesson on how to climb/belay, then let us do whatever we wanted. Moreover...they've got a lot of specials. I appreciate the varying climbing courses for differing skill levels. The venue is perfect for 25 people but can become crowded on Saturday afternoons when birthday parties are booked. One has to wait a while before someone ahead of you finishes and it can be awkward trying to focus on your climbing when others are staring at you and losing their patience as they wait for you to finish. read more

Today was my first time here at Canyons and I was very impressed with the staff and the facility. A good buddy of mine invited me and today was my first time climbing in several years and I had never belayed before. The young man who instructed me to belay was VERY patient and gave lots of advice to me. The walls themselves were in good condition and varied in difficulty. Its a nice place for beginners or advanced climbers to climb and have fun. There were lots of kids there for several classes in the evening but they weren't in the way. read more

If I could give them zero stars based on Kyle Smith I would!!! Reached out a week ago via email to inquire about a membership for a 6-year-old child...website says $25/homeschool and $30 college student. The homeschool option says you can't use after 4 PM and I inquired if it would be possible to use max one day per week until 5 PM due to scheduling conflicts. Literally, ONE HOUR past the "policy time" and only on a rare occasion. Kyle Smith insisted I had to pay $80/month when I asked about the $25-$30 memberships he said that those don't apply so it would then be $55/month. I asked him why and he said that they give college students a discount because they usually "don't have a lot of money" and the homeschool students are limited to the 4 PM timeframe. I said fine then can I sign up for the homeschool option and be limited to the 4 PM option and he told me no because my child isn't homeschooled... by his own determination because I had inquired about using outside of the 4 PM option. I said what is the difference if she is homeschooled and 6 years old, elementary school and 6 years old, or doesn't attend school at all and 6 years old if she abides by the 4 PM policy time rule? He had no answer just refused to allow that membership option. I asked many times for the owner's contact information and he refused to provide it. Proceeded to continue to argue with me about their policies and be hostile. The fact that someone who claims to be the manager would lose a customer entirely rather than even allow them to sign up for the "homeschool option" at SIX YEARS OLD is beyond me. There are no words to describe this level of ignorance. I hope the owners read this and see how awful his treatment is of potential customers because he refuses to provide their information to resolve issues and only wants to argue with people. read more

The doors have reopened with new ownership. I took my 12-year old daughter last Saturday, and we had a great time. The staff was friendly, and even helped me belay since my daughter was not old enough to belay me (you have to be 13 years old). The climbing walls are great. Really like this gym. They have very fun top rope routes as well as a nice bouldering section. I'm more of a boulderer so I find myself spending more time with the bouldering problems. Now I've been to many gyms in various cities, but I think the gyms in Texas (I've also been to other gyms in Dallas and Houston) seem to underrate their bouldering problems. Many v1s and v2s I feel should really be v3s or v4s. But they are still fun and challenging! I've been here twice this week already. Wish I lived here so I could get a membership and stop paying $20 a visit! read more

Came here for a birthday party but there are not enough helpers and my kids just ended up standing around waiting and being bored.

My boyfriend and I had our first climb there tonight and it was a BLAST! There is a great deal going on on Groupon so the cost was cheap. They gave us harnesses and shoes, taught us how to belay and how the wall was set up. We were up the wall in no time. The environment was very relaxed. I never felt intimidated or pressured. An employee came by twice to see if we were doing well. All staff members we interacted with were so nice and helpful! A few friends and I go climbing a few times a week. Mostly summit (the old Dallas Rocks and Exposure). We decided to drive north and check out the canyons rock climbing gym. My first impression was that it had just opened and was not completely ready for the general public, but I quickly realized that the feeling mostly came from the new bouldering wall that they were in the middle of building that had not quite opened up yet. My friends and I decided to put on our harnesses and top rope/sport climb on the back end of the wall. Hands-down the coolest sport route climbing wall compared to summit and a couple other planning gyms that I have checked out. The only thing I would dock points from The Canyons is the fact that there were so many kids running around we could barely even climb. I think one of them even tried to bite me. What's that all about? While we were in the middle of sport climbing, there were tons of three and four year-olds playing tug-of-war right below us. Not ideal, but fun nonetheless.
