I love this business and have been enjoying doing their paintings for at least 5 years. The instructors are very friendly and make even the beginners feel at ease with painting. Stacy is wonderful. My coworkers and I usually go every other month for an outing to get us together and relax. We normally go to the location at Eclipse de Luna in Dunwoody, you can order drinks and tapas. This location is wonderful too and you can bring a bottle of wine and some cheese and crackers, whatever you feel like. I also have gone several times for my birthday. They are very flexible too and can make accommodations for your group. Just let them know ahead of time. read more

I found this place through word of mouth. One of my friends was raving about a great girls night out that she had and I wanted to know more. I looked Sips N Strokes up online and found that they teach you how to make your own painting...and it's BYOB. So, I signed up and got some girlfriends to join me. We ended up painting the "Believe Cross" and while each of us painted the same picture, they all came out different and reflected out personalities. It was great. Each day of the month features a different painting and the style of art varies as well. There are some really girly paintings as well as some landscape art. My instructor was Beverly and she was great. She made it really easy and FUN to paint, even for the people in the class who hadn't painted since kindergarten. I went back to SNS with a group of friends on Friday evening. Had to take off a star though because I was not impressed with our instructor this time around. In my previous two SNS experiences, the instructors took their time and thoroughly explain what they wanted us to do before letting us touch our canvases with paint. This time around the instructor wanted us to paint it as she was actively instructing what to do which was quite problematic because her ability to convey in words what we were supposed to be doing sucked. Everyone in the class was frustrated, moaning and groaning. It was an abstract painting, so maybe it's just hard to teach someone how to paint an abstract piece, I don't know. Also, throughout the class the instructor walked up and down the aisles to offer assistance. My friends and I were so frustrated with her instruction that we just kind of did out own thing. I guess the instructor didn't like this because she made several comments to me about how I needed to change things. Umm, hello, I paid $35 for this class I am going to paint what I want to paint how I want to paint it. I just really didn't appreciate her condescending remarks about what it should and shouldn't look like. I made my own unique painting. I know I will go back to SNS for sure but I just hope I don't ever have this instructor again. read more

I was invited here last night for a coworker's birthday and when she said it was at Sips N Strokes this whole image came to mind which was nothing like what this place actually is. you sip (wine) n you stroke (paint on a canvas). Ok then. you can't knock the concept...they've got to be making a killing -you pay between 25 and 35 dollars to sit in a room with a ton of other people (women) they provide you with a plastic cup,the use of a corkscrew, 2 paintbrushes and 4 squirts per color of acrylic paint and a canvas. The teacher gets up front with a microphone and demonstrates in steps how to create the same painting she is painting. I don't know..i had fun..but I don't think I would necessarily go back here. The atmosphere sucked-- a big room in an out of the way shopping mall, the instructors weren't particularly friendly and were way too critical and were policing the paint like it was liquid crack. The instructor repeatedly would interrupt her teaching to stop a person from getting more paint insisting "I PROMISE... you REALLY won't need the black very much...If everyone could limit it to no more than 4 squirts that would be grrreat." WTF? C'mon lady! For me it just seemed overpriced for what you get. I was however thrilled with my masterpiece...even though I received several stares as I was the only one who chose not to do the requisite red dress painting and lots of disapproving looks from the paint patrol ladies. To sum it all up it was like an elementary school art class with a more uncomfortable stool, fewer supplies and no encouragement or gold stars for being creative. The music is what you would expect... think Cyndi Lauper etc. cuz "girls just wanna have fun" right? Pros: ample parking...it's in a strip mall. Also, it's BYOB. It you plan on bringing snacks-- don't bring many. Wow, this place was great! One of my junior league friends found a class here and I signed up with some friends. It is so nice that you can bring your own food and drinks and they do a great job of making sure you get to sit by your friends. Everyone has a great view of the instructor and while at first I thought she was going really quickly, I realized that some people followed along just as quickly but at the same time, she had enough breaks so the slower people (me) could catch up. At the end she stuck around and if someone wasn't 100% happy with their painting, she was happy to help if they wanted it. I thought this was excellent and the service I received at this class was beyond the ones I had at the brookhaven class I took once (not to mention, there was more space here!). I've found my new obsession - art for the artistically challenged!!! I'm seriously the most terrible artist in the world, but my painting came out totally cute, due to the excellent instruction (and the wine)! I've already signed up for 3 more sessions. It was really, really fun to do mostly what the instructor said (so it would look good), but also go off on my own a bit (to exercise a bit of creativity). I took my mom here for Mother's Day, and she also had an excellent time. She's signed up with me for another one as well. You can bring any kind of drinks, food, etc. - but beware, you don't get much room to put stuff (other than the floor), so I wouldn't recommend bringing a giant picnic or anything. They even have corkscrews and cups, so you don't have to bring your own - just bring the booze. (And I really think a little alcohol helped me relax and paint better.) There was exactly 1 guy in a room of 60 people, so this is definitely more of a girls' activity. But I love it! And to me, the price is totally reasonable ($25-45 per painting, depending on complexity, I think). There's a different painting taught every day, so I think there's probably at least one painting a month that'll tickle your fancy, unless you're sad inside or something. read more

This is a place for people to go who would like to learn how to paint your very own piece of art work and enjoy your favorite bottle of wine while learning, that's right wine and painting! There is a different painting everyday of the week so you just go to their website and choose the day you want to go. And guys this is a great place to go if you are single and want to meet intelligent women and learn how to paint your own piece of art work. They supply everything you will need so all you need to bring is a friend and your favorite bottle of wine or adult beverage. I have never considered myself artistic in the least bit, but Sips-n-Strokes made it so simple for me to create my own beautiful work of art and bring it home when finished. I had a wonderful time letting my creative juices flow! Each night they feature a different painting that everyone will replicate, so you can go to the website and choose which night you want to go on based on the painting being offered that night. As Allison Z. said below, they let you choose your own colors so that you can be a bit more creative with it. The staff is great, owner Stacy is so cute and helpful. She encourages you to be happy with your painting and not "over-do it" to the point of getting stressed. This is not an art class, it is (according to Stacy) "art entertainment". You can take your favorite beverage and snacks which makes it a relaxed atmosphere. I was definitely a beginner and I never felt out of place. This place is fantastic! It's little known in ATL, it's new to the area having been a franchise from Alabama (Shill alert: I AM NOT ONE! I spent a lot of time talking to the owner on Saturday). Sips n Strokes is a "paint-your-own-painting" place; you can bring wine and snacks and spend 2 hours making your own work of art. They have a calendar on their site with the paintings that are scheduled each day, you register online (only $25 for the whole session) for one that sparks your interest and you're all set. Two girlfriends and myself wanted something different and productive to do on a Saturday, so we hiked it all the way from Midtown to Marietta (warning, this place is tucked away in a shopping center, about 45 mins from anywhere ITP) to make some art. When we arrived, Stacy (the owner) checked us in, gave us some brushes and palette and then we chose a seat. The canvases are all ready to go, you fill your pallette with paint and the instructor gets started. Our teacher, Genia, did a great job showing us how to paint a large flower. In addition to helping us create the shape and overall look of the painting, she taught us some techniques, like "sieppling." Genia and Stacy walk around and help out throughout the session, and if you make a mistake (I accidentally dripped some blue on my red) they are eager to help. After two bottles of champage, the three of us created works of art. Each was different in color, shape and size. The instructors give you the basics and you are free to use any color combos you'd like. Sips n Strokes is great for groups of girls (there was a bachelorette party there on Sat.), a date night, or any bonding outing. It's tucked away in the back of a quiet shopping center = kinda hard to find but a ton of parking. You walk into a large room that looks something like a canvas itself... white walls with all sorts of doodles and signatures of the people who've been there before you. You'll find mine near the bathroom. =) I've been 2x now and had unique experiences each time. I've had two different instructors and both were very friendly and welcoming. Their personalities play a huge role in making this place a success. This is a great way for people to try painting for the first time, some of the classes even offer a pre-sketched canvas. It's also fun for people with some experience though, as it's very free form and originality is encouraged. The really experienced people out there may be a little bored by though (not a ton of brush options, no acrylics, etc). Also, I'm not sure if you'd really be able to build much knowledge as it's not designed to be a progressive series or anything like that... I suppose it's what you make it. It's really cool to see how different each person's piece turns out after listening to the same instructor! It's fun to do with friends but it's ok when flying solo too! There haven't been any dudes at either class I attended, so it might make for a somewhat uncomfortable date. It's surprisingly relaxing, esp for those of us who play with systems and numbers all day - a great way to work the other side of your brain! read more

I came last night with a few girlfriends and was really not in the mood to do anything but watch American Idol and Bones after a tough day at the office. Ohh how glad I am that I came!! We painted the "funky dress" and I loved how mine turned out. It was great that while everyone painted the same thing in general, everyone's dress turned out a little bit differently! I am not an artist at all and on top of that, I am kind of Type A, so seeing the initially blank canvas in front of me was a little intimidating. I must admit that I was nervous. I can't draw worth a darn and was very skeptical that my painting would turn out. I was pleasantly surprised. The instructor literally walks you through the painting step by step. She was so nice and laid back. We never felt rushed. I still can't believe how awesome my painting looks! The venue itself was very nice. We had a few drinks, ate and painted. (They had some great specials for us too.) First off I usually buy "camps" from Cobb County Parks & Rec. But this is a great idea for a little money and you come out with an original made by you - to some degree. It's also great fun with friends for a night out and I get that too. Heads up - what's in here for you to use it not that high quality. Visit an art store and youtube if you just want an original piece. Cobb Parks & Rec does adult classes too. But, my review of my experience - I attended a birthday party for a small child here. I know the mother is a planner and I had the invitation in hand three weeks before the date. She does a well thought out themed party for her child every year. This year it was here. The party was to start at 1 PM. At ten minutes till one when we arrive, guess who is standing outside a locked business with cake, decorations, snack tray, & gifts??? She is calling the business phone number upset at the locked door and no set up time but forced to leave voice mails! So just minutes after 1 the door opens and she and other parents frantically "set up" and the young lady asks what painting? Did this business not ask this in advance to also be prepared? Then when 3 PM arrives she is rushing us out for the next party. Very unprofessional. (oh, while this parent was waiting outside they were eating lunch inside) Who ever runs this business needs to consider word of mouth and the number of parents attending parties. If this had gone better it could have brought additional opportunities to this business. If you do plan to do a child's birthday party at this location I suggest you get some details of their responsibilities & your expectations in writing. read more

Where else can you have a girls night out or date night with the love of your life and find the inner artist in yourself, create your own master piece and then take it home. I have painted at Canvas By U no less than 30 times and see the improvement with each master piece I have painted. I have had to retire some of my first paintings off my walls to hang up the new ones.
