An intriguing establishment, to say the least: compared to the Hotel Julien (the other main option for lodging in downtown Dubuque), the Hotel Canfield - at worst - offers the patron a much more affordable, but nonetheless historical, overnight experience along the Mississippi. My group, for instance, purchased a three-bed room with a fairly spacious adjoining kitchen-room for $90 per night; and - as we navigated the hallways of the second-floor to find our number - we were treated to an illustrative view of our patron brethren (one guest along the way had his door propped open with a thirty-six pack of Natural Ice). Fellow sojourners are, however, but a part of the charm of the Canfield. The room: to call its decoration "eclectic" would be a disservice to both the room and the term. "Blithely disjointed" may, in fact, be a better descriptor -- and though we'd been briefly regaled with tales of the Canfield's infamous "Panther Room," the appearance of the room in which we ended up seemed - in its own, simpler fashion - much more extraordinary. For one: it was adorned around the edges with a series of aesthetically-coherent ceramic figurines which were molded and painted in what I can only describe as a "pickaninny" style. This welcoming earthenware art was inexplicably matched on the periphery of the room with a series of Mexican-inflected sketches, hung from the walls: visual vignettes, colored in, of sombrero-shaded men in dulcet repose. And then the bathroom: in its economy of space it puts airline lavatories to shame, albeit awkwardly (for example: one method to achieve this end is the positioning of sink and mirror just outside the bathroom door, in the main bed-room). Meanwhile: the kitchen table's ruddy umber had a rustic quality - like a Cracker Barrel, sans the oppressive inauthenticity - and was surrounded on the walls by similarly colorful sketches, this time of Italian chefs and their coterie of vegetables. There is also a lounge on the first-floor, adjoined to the lobby - the Rainbow Lounge - which boasts a "unique 1930s art deco motif," according to the Canfield's own brochure; we unfortunately entered just at last-call, thanks to Iowa statutes, which proscribe the sale of alcohol after the second hour of the morning. From my sixty-second glimpse, I can assert - if nothing else - that Rainbow Lounge was indeed prismatic, and had intrigue to match that of its hotel housing; there was also tell of karaoke. Meanwhile: the night porter, to whom we headed after being rejected and expelled by the closing Rainbow, was a lean, cordial, hoary-coiffed old man who administered the desk and operated the door through the midnight hours. He checked us in expeditiously despite the post-2:00am time, and instructed us to our room by way of an antiquated (though entirely sturdy) elevator. Beware: there are two life-sized Native-American dolls seated arm-in-arm on the lobby's couch: you will be alarmed, but they are not working humans: they are only mannequin. Reaching our room: the beds were all three comfortable and well-maintained -- and, in fact, both main rooms were quite clean. Basic amenities were likewise well-provided, with one strange exception: there was instant coffee, an electric coffee pot, sugar and non-dairy creamer, and even little plastic khaki-tinted coffee cups -- but the cups literally lacked bottoms, which was a somewhat astounding and surreal realization in the Mississippi-side morning. (If this was some cup-based ontological joke, I cannot decide if it was cruel or good-natured.) The Canfield was also well-air-conditioned, and restful in the middle of July. Unfortunately, the woman stewarding the Sunday-morning desk was brusque and unpleasant - almost gruff, without any positive connotations - but our interaction was brief, and hardly detracted from the Canfield's overall impression. Beware: the twin mannequin will alarm you anew in the morning light. If again in Dubuque, I would not hesitate to return.

They don't make them like this anymore!

Pretty cool place, unlike some other guests who've left reviews, I got a bigger room, for only a little bit more, and the ambience was old school! I liked it. As the pictures show, my room's theme was, I'm guessing, late 60's... circa Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, and when we were landing men on the Moon. I'd recommend this place, it's right next to a ton of bars, and has a Karaoke bar in the lower level, and there's two Native Americans to greet you when you walk in. And the room phone... what can I say! It brought back memories of a simpler time when we weren't welded to our phones.

Not a bad establishment. It has a nostalgic feel with a motel 6 price tag downtown. The staff are pretty friendly as well.

I had to finally call and the lady appeared. I was quickly checked in which I did appreciate. Not with the same attention I have been in the past but checked in nonetheless. I checked in on the mobile app requesting a late check out of 4pm. I should have realized someone wouldn't go to bat to help but realized my request didn't go through until the morning. I asked as soon as I went down an was told there was nothing she could do since it was too late. I don't doubt she couldn't do anything as she wasn't empowered to do it. Said someone from "sales" would be in and they could help. When I returned, it was the same woman and had to ask if she was able to get someone to help and she said she could do anything. Before that I had asked her to try for a late checkout at 1 which she said was likely the most she could do. That was granted and as disappointed in the failure of the app I was happy to have that since I had no place to go for a few hours. Unfortunately, I don't believe she tried to go above and beyond that. Prior to that, I had come down the evening before to wait for Uber Eats to no one behind the desk again. When she did come out, I asked for a a bag for the ice machine since we don't have a bucket. Was told I'd get a bucket she assured was clean. She came back and offered bowls. Bowls that you'd use for soup or ice cream. Because they don't have any ice buckets. Who is taking their ice buckets? Back to the morning of requesting a late check out, there was no one behind the counter again. Had to wait and the same person from the night before finally showed up. Understaffed? Not empowered? Doesn't care? Idk... disappointed in this stay and see lots of room for improvement.

I checked in on December 23, 2025, for a two-night stay while visiting Dubuque for the holidays. At check-in, I advised the front desk that I am a Hilton Gold member and asked about the availability of a room upgrade and the $15 per guest breakfast credit. I was informed that neither was available, which I accepted without issue. The following morning, we chose to purchase the full breakfast to support the hotel. Unfortunately, the buffet food appeared to have been sitting out for an extended period and was both unappealing and inedible, despite our arriving at approximately 8:00 a.m. We ultimately chose not to eat and returned to our room, though we still left a generous tip for our server. As part of my Gold status benefits, I received a text message requesting feedback on my stay. I responded honestly, noting my disappointment regarding the lack of an upgrade and having paid $35 for a breakfast I could not eat. I rated my experience a 3. Shortly thereafter, I received a voicemail from the general manager asking that I call him. During the call, his demeanor was confrontational, aggressive, and unprofessional. Rather than addressing my concerns about the stay, he focused almost exclusively on my rating and repeatedly demanded personal information about a family member who had enrolled me in Hilton's Friends and Family program. His tone was accusatory, and he spoke over me while insisting that I "should know how the program works," The conversation included what I perceived as intimidation and implied threats related to my status and future stays, leaving me feeling pressured and uncomfortable. After subsequently speaking with Hilton Corporate, I was informed that my Gold status benefits should have been honored regardless of the Friends and Family program. Based on the general manager's conduct during the call, I no longer felt safe or welcome at the property. As a result, I immediately checked out of the hotel, forfeiting my second night despite still being charged for the full reservation. I later learned that the general manager had contacted the Hilton Friends and Family program and had my benefits revoked. When I contacted Hilton to inquire why future reservations had been canceled, I was told that I had been labeled "rude and disruptive." This characterization is inaccurate and unjustified. I spent less than 18 hours at the hotel, used digital check-in and a mobile key, and had no confrontational interactions with staff beyond routine, respectful inquiries about my benefits.

The General Manager was the most vindictive person ever. I truly feel sorry for his team. The…read moreHampton Inn is a much better place to stay when in Dubuque with limited options.

This place is a disgusting shithole…read more I rolled into Dubuque late at night. The first room I was given smelled horrendously of cigarette smoke, so badly that my eyes started watering within seconds of entering the room. I went back down to the front desk and requested a new room. The guy started doing some things on the computer, then another employee walked in and they started speaking in Russian or some other Cyrillic language for several seconds. Kind of weird, because the second guy had greeted me when I first arrived, and he seemed perfectly fluent in English. It just seemed weird that two people who both seemed fluent in English would switch, discuss something, and then the first guy completed the discussion with me in English. The second guy, the one who had originally greeted, had red eyes and looked high AF. Just a really bizarre experience. I got to my second room and immediately noted that it sounded like a window was open. I checked, and it was. There was a faint smell of cigarette smoke in the room, and I am fairly certain that this window was left open to dissipate the smell. I turned on the lights and noticed that the placard on the phone was yellow with nicotine stain. Wtf? This is a fairly modern looking hotel. Certainly renovated not very long ago. What modern hotel has nicotine stains? Then I needed to use the toilet, and discovered that the bathroom stank horribly of cigarette smoke. Like someone had been smoking in there immediately before I entered the room. And it still stank just as strongly in the morning when I woke up. I think someone had been smoking in the bathroom with the exhaust fan on, thinking that it would magically make the stink not go everywhere else. I went downstairs for breakfast and there were biscuits on the hot food display. Just biscuits. No eggs, no bacon or sausage or anything else for hot food. I grabbed a biscuit and some jelly. I went to get a glass of orange juice, and the machine just discharged water. This was at 7:00, and breakfast hours start at 6:30. It's not like I got down to the breakfast area right at the beginning of breakfast and they hadn't had time yet to bring the rest of the food out or restock the juice machine with concentrate mix. If you're traveling into Dubuque, avoid this place. It smells bad, the breakfast is literally just biscuits, and you can't even get a glass of orange juice to wash down your biscuit.
