It's been many years since I've been back to Milwaukee for the holiday to visit family. We decided to take a trip down memory lane and head over to Candy Cane Lane. It was a first time for my wife. We had nothing better to do and were in the Christmas spirit. Maybe I'm just getting older and it isn't as special, but to me it seemed like they were slacking this year. Sure, some of the houses went all out, but it was only about 15% of them. 10% did nothing. The rest were half assed attempts. It used to be 75% all out. It's cool they collect donations to go to a good cause. It's nice that a lot of drivers go without headlights. It certainly was a lot less crowded that I was anticipating. One of my good buddies from high school lives in the middle of one of the streets in the heart of Candy Cane Lane. I remember how much he hated Christmas because it took him an extra 15 minutes to come and another to go during the holidays. I always laughed at him. I don't see myself making a recommendation to check this out to anyone else in the near future. Perhaps if there are little kids around that could sway my view.

It's a West Allis tradition of going to see Christmas lights that started a looooong time ago. In fact, I remember when it was in the neighborhood just northeast of 84th and Oklahoma! Since it has moved to it's present day location, however, it seems to have grown in popularity by leaps and bounds! The boundaries of Candy Cane Lane are marked by trees wrapped up like candy canes and spans about 12 blocks, from Oklahoma Ave. to Montana Ave. and 93rd to 96th streets. On a busy night (especially if there is snow on the ground), expect to move at a snail's pace. Not so great for the driver, but awesome for the passengers who get to really get a good look at the houses and take nice pictures. The current neighborhood has chosen the MACC Fund (Milwaukee Area Childhood Cancer) and Food For Families as it's charities of choice and collects canned goods as well as cash donations at either the intersection of 94th and Manitoba or 94th and Dakota, so expect delays there. Not all the houses participate, but most do, even if it's just simple lights around an outdoor tree. The highlights for me this year were the inflatable Chewbacca (I thought he'd be taller....he was only 3 feet tall!) and the leg lamp from A Christmas Story, with a box marked Fragile out in front. Don't be a Scrooge, pack up the fam, grab the hot chocolate and cookies, and drive on over to West Allis to enjoy the season that only comes once a year! 2/2016

Just pure holly jolly-ness for the sake of the season, and doing something good by way of supporting the MACC fund.

We drove by on Friday evening and noticed the lights, music, carnival rides, and overall merriment and decided to head back with the kiddo in tow later in the weekend. If you arrive between noon-4pm (Fri-Sat-Sun), you can enjoy their $20 unlimited ride wristband special, which is a pretty sweet deal. We, unfortunately, arrived on Sunday evening, so spent $25 on 30 ride tickets (which was plenty for our family to enjoy as many rides as we really cared to over the course of 2+ hours or so). They have your typical carnival rides (bumper cars, the zipper, etc) as well as typical carnival activities (fun house, house of mirrors) and games (darts, basketball, goldfish). They also have food vendors slinging typical fair-like food (corndogs, hot dogs, funnel cakes, ice cream, donuts). They also offer nightly entertainment. They have a different band playing each night as well as a family movie night on Saturday. The festival offers free entry, which is nice. I mean, obviously, you spend plenty on food and fun but it's nice to not have the extra entry fee on top of it all. The proceeds from the festival (100%) go to fund projects for the City of Greenfield Parks Department (in past years it's funded fountain projects, updated park signage, etc). Awesome perk to have a little fun while at the same time know the money spent is going to support local green spaces! Definitely a fun way to start the summer!

The prices can be pretty expensive but it is totally worth it with what you get out of it. You can bring kids with you as well because they have kids rides. The food is great and a little pricey but once again, totally worth it. The only thing that isn't the best feature is that if you leave past 9, you cannot re-enter which I hope that changes in the upcoming years.

The portions were generous. The lamb dinner came with delicious rice, salad and plenty of lamb. The gyros were also stacked and the souvlaki was perfect. We also started with the saganaki- perfectly crispy and salty cheese. The drinks were offered by the same company that handles State Fair so you can get cans of beer for $8-9, glasses of wine or they had some frozen cocktails. My only gripe was that they didn't post which gate to enter from. There are so many and when we walked to the pedestrian gate from 2024, we were told we couldn't walk through the grounds to greek fest. The staff helping with food and drinks were great - cooking and bringing up food as quick as they could. Friendly, too! Wish the music would've started sooner but we opted to head out since it was mostly food, games/rides for kids or a small area for greek shopping. However, food was worth it! Definitely check it out!

The salad not very good, only 2 olives and 1 piece of cheese 2 cherrie tomatoes, one small dressing, piece of bread, such tint olives for $10 was definitely not worth it. I though I could get filled up on the rice but it was literally crunchy and hard! No easy access for people with disabilities. Had to have my mom walk in for the food to take home because drive through was already closed. Such a waste of money for 3 bites of rubbery smokey over seasoned chicken, lame salad and crunch rice made me decide to not go back for a 3rd time. They are rushing the cooking and not tasting b4 selling to make huge profits. That's stealing people's money. Wauwatosa Greek Fest chicken was horrible last year however, nice and tender this year, great salad, olives, cheese, rice, bread, gyro and portions were worth the price! Please stop rushing the cooking time and taste test b4 selling...I mean how can you mess up rice!?

I got there about an hour after the fair opened at 11AM and left by 3PM. Because we got there early, we parked across the street from the fair and didn't have to deal with the long parking lines. I was pleasantly surprised with the fair and I had a great time! Why I say I was surprised is because it was a lot bigger than I remembered and I thought it offered a lot- from carnival rides, to food, to music and drinks. There was something for everyone, children and adults. My favorite part of the fair was a delicious gyro, the goats, and a little girl and her prized cow!! The animals were absolutely adorable and I loved petting the goats, I really felt like a kid again! My husband also had a nice time, he enjoyed a corn dog and he liked seeing the animals. I also appreciated the security. Purse checks, metal detectors, and right when we walked in we saw a security guard watching from a stand. I don't stay at fairs after dark because I know there are drunk people and fights but I felt very safe during the day. I look forward to going back next year!

There are plenty of things to do from seen the different farm animals, to rides, to food. We've been going to the fair for at least 25 years and we always make it a point to do a little bit of everything. We had to try some of the dairy products including shakes and of course the cream puffs. They were delicious! The dairy building also has a display showing the process of going from cow to cream puff. One of the new attractions this year is the America 250 Wheel. It gives you a great view of the fair and surrounding areas. Another can't miss attraction is the pig races. Young and old alike have a great time cheering on their favorite pigs during the race. There is always something to do at the Wisconsin State Fair.
