Rocket Fizz - Candy, chocolate, kitschy signs, pop, and the odd seasonal item (Halloween at present)

Rocket Fizz

Having been to several candy stores in several cities in the last few weeks, I feel I can leave a fair review for Rocket Fizz based on one visit. Visually the store layout is very appealing. Items are beautifully displayed on various countertops, and cleanly organized into wall strips. Bottles upon bottles of colourful carbonated beverages of every flavour adorn the lower shelves, and are also available in two large coolers next to the checkout. I'd actually be a little nervous to bring a child or a clumsy person with me! The place is spotlessly clean and very wholesome looking in a 1950s diner kind of way. As other reviewer noted, there are no loose or bulk candies, other than salt water taffy. This is probably a good thing, COVID notwithstanding. Who really wants to eat the stale raunchy candy halfway down a pile or a giant jar anyway? There are some candies which typically come bulk that are already neatly packaged and on display, but not much selection. I was a little disappointed with the selection overall. For example, all the KitKat and other chocolate products seemed to be quite heavily focused on white chocolate. There was a small KitKat section near the back of the store, but there were only 2 flavours, green tea and sake. Other notable flavours were birthday cake and apple pie. I feel like they got stuck with the flavours that are lousy sellers. There's a small jar of little one-bite KitKats at the checkout, yet they don't sell them in packs. Huh? One thing they had in abundance was Walkers toffee and liquorice products, including little liquorice gummy Scottie dogs. The Hammonds chocolate bars come in a delicious range of flavours, like coconut cream pie. Although it's beautiful and undoubtedly mind-blowing for any kid who walks in, wandering around the store gets old fast. It's organized like an Irish video store from 20 years ago - random titles everywhere, not much organized into categories, lots of product repetition. It makes it look like they have a lot of selection, when actually it's pretty limited. Fun for a visit, but you'll probably leave feeling like you really didn't find what you were looking for. Didn't have the selection of other, smaller candy stores I've visited recently. I'm a bit disappointed with Rocket Fizz, but there are good points to it. The soda pops we tried were NOT one of them!

When you first step in I admit it is kind of a neat feeling to see all the candy containers and other candy themed knick knacks that they sell but after that initial feeling wears off there isn't much to get excited about when it comes to this place. First off even with two people working I received no greetings or offers of assistance which was surprising as there were alot of little ones in the store and you would think you would want at least one person on the floor making sure people are looked after and candies are not being sampled by over eager little hands. I tried to keep my purchase on the small side as I couldn't find any signage near the candy indicating what the price per pound was and I didn't want to get a shock at the till. After making my selections I brought my bag to the till and it rang up for $3.25 which doesn't sound all that bad when you compare it to other goodies in the mall but my problem was the fact that everything in my bag was stuff you could find at the convenience store for five cents a piece. If I went by convenience store prices what I had in my bag was worth $1.35 which isn't even half of what I paid here. Finally the biggest slap in the face was how everything tasted. When you pay more I think you should expect a higher level of quality but what I got wouldn't even be considered acceptable let alone high quality. My lime bottles were so stale it took about two full minutes of chewing to get it broken down enough to the point I was comfortable swallowing and the fuzzy peaches seemed to be a day or two away from creating a similar issue. I had read the reviews prior to coming in here and really wanted to be a white knight finding the stores good qualities and hopefully writing at least a three star review but my fellow yelpers were correct in their prior evaluations. The price, service, and quality of goods here are DREADFUL and you would be much better off spending your money somewhere else!
