Hilton Garden Inn Woodbridge

Hilton Garden Inn Woodbridge

My husband Bryan and his family had recently purchased a brick for his grandfather at the Marine…read moreCorps Museum, because of the close proximity to the museum our party of 7 booked our stay at the Hilton Garden Inn at Woodbridge. Bryan and I flew in from San Diego into DCA and drove down to Woodbridge, VA, the distance is 30 miles not bad at all especially for the cost of the hotel and the location. It's located right across the street from a shopping center and plenty of restaurants around it even though there is a restaurant and bar inside. When we arrived at the Hilton Garden Inn, we were greeted right away and checked in to our room. We were on the fifth floor, our room was very spacious, king size bed and fluffy pillows that were suspiciously really comfortable. I changed the temperature to 66 degrees, it's not constant central air but definitely left our room nice and cool with extra blankets in the closet. The bathroom was really spacious too with a large shower and plenty of towels and Neutrogena shampoo, conditioner and bar soap. Because we were only staying for 5 days we didn't really need the cleaning service. Outside of your door they provide you a list that you can fill out in case you are in need of anything else. I checked extra towels, body lotion and an extra pillow and the next morning it was outside of our door, it was great. In the morning, my husband and I used the "gym," it was really small but it did it's job. Plenty of cardio machines, weights but there's only machine cage, where you can do arms, legs and back workouts. I appreciated that it was open 24 hours. For the pool, it was nice and indoor which was great because the weather was so weird when went. I wish the jets in the jacuzzi was working but the water was perfectly hot. The pool is only 5 ft deep but being 5'1 it was nice and relaxing. If you go by the lobby they do have a mini store where you can buy snacks and little travel essentials. The team at the front desk are wonderful, they're so nice and helpful. One issue I did have was at the restaurant/bar area, on our first night our family decided to have dinner at the restaurant. We ordered our food and drinks but it took so long to get anything, I felt like our server was only trying to assist the guests at the bar. I had asked for a coke and my husbands uncle had to walk up to the bar to get the coke for me. Plus our food was sitting at the counter ready to be picked up. I felt like our server saw it but never brought it to us, we finally gave up and grabbed the food and set it to our table. My husbands grandmother who is so sweet was actually really upset that the food was just at the counter and no one had come out to get it for us. But because everything else was great I kept the score a 5, but I really wanted to give it a 4.5

Bonjour, buongiorno. Mozzarella here…read more Highly trained California service queen. International traveler. Connoisseur of respectable accommodations. Darling, I have standards. Unfortunately, this stay offered sticky carpet, questionable housekeeping, a stained mattress, noisy hallways, enough light at midnight to perform minor surgery, and an air conditioner whose commitment to air conditioning appeared largely theoretical. But none of that prepared me for checkout. Mama was told, "You're all set." No receipt. Mama's eyebrow went up. Suspicious, madame. She requested the receipt. AND VOILÀ! Approximately $62 worth of alcoholic beverages had mysteriously appeared on our room. Mama explained that we had not ordered drinks at the hotel. This seemed fairly straightforward to me, and I am seven pounds. Remove charges. Apologize. Investigate later. Release the royal family. Instead, we were treated to a 35-minute season finale of: MRS. MARPLE AND THE CASE OF THE MYSTERIOUS COCKTAIL. Receipts were examined. Papers were shuffled. Mama explained repeatedly that she had not ordered the drinks. Meanwhile, my carriage to Colonial Williamsburg was practically circling the porte-cochère. Finally, our detective uncovered the crucial evidence. AHA! The receipt had our room number on it. The NAME, however, belonged to a complete stranger. Then Mama was asked if that stranger's name was hers. No, madame. Mama had not changed her identity overnight. She remained Mama. The stranger remained the stranger. I remained sober. CASE CLOSED. Perhaps the mystery that actually needs solving is how your staff put a stranger's bar tab on our room in the first place. After the night we had already endured, spending another 35 minutes proving Mama was not secretly living a double life as a mysterious hotel cocktail enthusiast was not the vacation activity we had planned. Simply removing charges that never belonged to her did not restore the lost sleep, time, or chunk of our vacation morning. A parking comp, Hilton Honors points, or another gracious gesture would have gone a long way. Instead, the royal carriage departed late, tired, and still pondering Virginia's greatest unsolved mystery: WHO IS THE STRANGER WITH THE COCKTAILS? Virginia, ma chère, your first impression on this California queen has been... complicated. Mozzarella Highly trained service queen. Passenger of carriages. Keeper of standards. Seven pounds of investigative journalism. And absolutely NOT responsible for anybody's bar tab.

Red Roof Inn - King Superior Room

Red Roof Inn

Our stay in this facility, along with one at another Red Roof the night before, have convinced us…read moreto reluctantly give up on the Red Roof brand we have preferred in our travels for many years. I am sure there are plenty of branches in the chain that would live up to our expectations, but these two did not, so the chain is no longer reliable enough to count on. The older couple on duty when we checked in were fine. Especially the wife, who is obviously the brains of the operation when they are working, and who is helpful and pleasant. We got our room key (only one key card for two of us, oddly enough), but when we stepped into the room we were knocked back by the small of cigarettes. I am sure cigarette smells are difficult to eradicate from a room, but I am not convinced any effort had been made in this case. So I went back to the front desk and the woman helpfully grabbed her master key and we went in search of a suitable room. The first one we checked was having ceiling work done, she remembered, and the next one turned out to be occupied, so we tried a third room and I didn't smell cigarette, so that was the winner. We settled in. There were a couple of small issues right out of the gate, such as there being no coffeemaker. You know, those tiny one-cup things hotels seem to use nowadays? We don't make dreadful coffee with them, but they are handier than using a microwave to heat water to make our own hot drinks. Also, the toilet didn't flush efficiently, so a second flush was often required to get the job done. But later in the evening a worse problem evolved: a multiple dripping water leak from the ceiling near the interior door to the hallway. It was dripping in three places and the plaster looked like it had been repaired already for such a leak previously. I went down to the lobby and the old gentleman was there. He asked if we wanted a new room because maintenance wouldn't be able to look at it until the next morning. I said we could live with it if it didn't get worse as it was not in our living space but just next to the door. I asked if they wanted to look at it and maybe put a bucket down. Plus I suspected it was related to a shower being taken and they could see exactly where it was leaking. But he just asked a couple more times if we wanted a new room, so I figured we had reached the end of our conversation. I reiterated that we were fine and went back to the room. Later on the drip stopped, as I had surmised it would. I think the woman would have wanted to do more, but who knows? So this wasn't a tragedy for just one night, but as I said, it feels like the Red Roof brand is not up to the standard when we started using it when we traveled with pets many years ago.

This hotel was dark, dirty, and run down. And that's just the exterior in lobby. Thankfully, I did…read morenot experience any of the actual rooms because they had a water pipe burst and didn't have any rooms available. The man at the front desk apologized and said I would get a full refund. However, when I called the company to request my refund, they did not want to give it to me. And in fact, tried to accuse me of never showing up for my reservation. So I am currently battling to get my money back.
