Well... I read the negative reviews and decided it o give them a shot anyway. I try to give everyone a second chance. I'm glad I did! We were in town to do a campus tour and UNC Chapel Hill and this place was only 15 minutes away. When we arrived we were greeted by the sweetest and most helpful young woman! We were a bit frazzled because traffic... ridiculous! Too bad I can't review that for improvement! Ugh! Anyway, she was very helpful, super sweet and just what we needed! Check in was easy and our room was spotless and cozy! I think my only "complaint", and I wouldn't even call it that, was towels... my daughter and I use a lot of towels. They "stock" just enough. And truthfully, it was fine. A friend would say that our need for so many towels is a third world problem, and she's right so we aren't even complaining about it. The only real problem we had was the toilet started flushing really slow BUT they gave me a plunger and that worked like magic! Overall our stay was comfortable and warm and everything we needed!! I'll add that they offer many different amenities! They have a gym, laundry room and even a room that has snack machines and such. You can access that room with you room card. Again, our stay was great! I suggest always reading all reviews but give people a chance! Some people just choose to have a bad experience by their own attitude and expectations that can't realistically be met. Your stay will be what you decide to make it!! Where do I begin? As a positive, we were able to check in early. That is the only positive. Room was dirty and smelled like a citronella candle had been burning. Literally no toilet paper. Had to ask for some at the front desk. They claim to have coffee "on them" 24/7 but at 6:30 in the morning after our first night we were told the manager had to make the coffee and wouldn't be there for an hour. Needed a blow dryer. None to be found. We are IHG members and cannot believe this place is able to keep its status as an IHG establishment. read more

This hotel served its purpose . The bed was comfortable and the laundry service was cool since I'd been on vacation for a week it was needed . The front desk was nice and helpful when asked . They also had a really cool bbq gazebo area that would be even better if they took care of it . Tbh I don't think they ever go out there and check on it because the two days I was there a bum was living there and nobody said anything. Affordable hotel and front desk was friendly, but all in all the hotel is a mess. Checked in at 1am. Room no ac. I called the front desk and he was quick to come up/ check/ give us a new room with working ac. With that switching of the keys we didn't get the key jacket back. So at the 2nd room tried to call the front desk to get the WiFi code... but the phone in that room didn't work. There was no charger by the left side of bed. The toilet wasn't flushing. The Clock on microwave hour back. The clock next to the bed was off. There was no body soap in the shower container (completely empty). The hotel smells really bad. It appears to be a mix of weed from guests and pets. There was a dog behind the front desk & the agent said the hotel fosters dogs I think? That is admirable in terms of helping, but odd choice with it probably being the root of the horrible smells. There was no hair dryer available in the room. The front desk agent was nice, but didn't seem well trained. He didn't advise me of the credit card authorization fee. Didn't acknowledge my status level being Platinum. The rooms look like they were semi updated but shoddily. Dirty surfaces. Usually IHG is pretty consistent, but this hotel was a flop. I would absolutely not go back. The state of the hotel and training gaps make me think the owner isn't investing appropriately, or if they have a management company- they are neglecting their responsibility. read more

Manager was a real jerk. Makes promises to staff members that he wont keep. Allows housekeeping lead to half do there jobs. Leaves the AGM alone most weekends with no one to do laundry or man the front desk. She has to check all the rooms and take trash and do everybody's job when there could have been someone scheduled to work the position. I thought manager was a good person but after finding another job... I found out how much of a dick he really was. Not a good work experience. Wouldn't recommend it to a dog to work at. Candlewood Suites turned away paying customers who were victims of the recent flooding in Durham. The hotel's reasoning was as follows: "...we will no longer be able to accommodate guests who are residents of Durham County for check-in at our establishment." This is a hard pass for anyone used to a more upscale Candlewood experience. I came in very late at night due to flights. Generally the company I work for, covers hotel costs. They told me I had to pay. I have never been told that. I was too tired to fight. Got up to the room. Disgusting. The tub/shower had dirt and hair that they mopped the floor with and dumped down the drain. But didn't bother to clean out. The AC unit in the room sounded like a tarp flapping in the wind. I'm confused at how these dudes failed so bad...I do a great deal of traveling and am one of their diamond elite guys. Generally I have a positive experience with IHG properties. I booked this room, the next day they even called to confirm the booking. I confirmed and let them know I'd be arriving late that evening because I had a drive. When I arrived they were confused and said they didn't have any rooms. A few phone calls and 45 minutes later the front desk dude was able to contact someone who had the magical ability to make a room appear. That was the worst most awkward check in I've ever experienced...bless their hearts. read more

I wasn't impressed by this place. My company put me and about a dozen other employees here for a two week training course. We were told the rooms would be cleaned and made up once a week. When we asked after the first week we were told it would be 7 days after check in which was Monday. On the Monday of the second week none of our rooms had been touched. When we asked at the front desk we were handed excuses about how busy the housekeeping staff was and that our rooms would be done the next day. Long story short, after asking every day, being given the same old excuse about how busy the housekeeping staff was, and not getting the rooms cleaned, we finally checked out at the end of the second week. They didn't even empty the garbage in the room. I suspect they even had the audacity to complain to our head office about us complaining. They don't want to know how that meeting went. read more

I guess it's a long term stay hotel, but it didn't scream safe. There was a guy who had a sign from pan handling with his close hanging off his body. My mother went to check into her room & there was someone "living" in the room. There were clothes all over the room. We had a large party that reserved several rooms. It was a disaster. There were rooms that didn't have sheets on the beds. The bathrooms were not clean. The only small positive was the woman at the front desk was patient & let us know if we were happy there was another hotel we could visit. read more

multiply the 5 x 2 and now you have it right: ) I had my doubts about this place but they were all trashed as soon as I got to the desk. I met Cameron and damn he was nice. Easy. Affable. A real good face and representative to meet you after a long drive with a very loud animal. Oh and helpful. We brought our little boy Ivory with us that would be our cat and after checking in went and chilled letting he and we rest. We drove 2+ hours from Jville for a vet appt. and were really made to feel right at home here. If I had a question it was answered with great warmth and a genuine smile. 2 other absolutely lovely ladies need a major shout out as well. They made our stay fun. Laughter can never be under estimated. The 2 I'm referring to are: Tomeeka and Kaneshia. Tomeeka got a hug because she is such a genuine real joyous people person. I wish all three continued successes as they all deserve them. They work hard make it look easy and are just enjoyable humble people. The beds and the room were fine with appointments like sink, fridge etc. The beds were really attractive in that we found them to be comfortable and clean. Thank you equally hard working cleaning staff. To end I highly recommend this place which without these three would just be another box with windows and no personality. RUN!!! HOTEL IS NASTY. STAFF DOESN'T CARE. My family and I were in town for graduation at UNC Chapel Hill. We booked 5 rooms, several months in advance. Upon arrival we were greeted by THEE MOST slowest nonchalant front desk person. After standing in a looooong line waiting for the ONE slowest front desk person available, we were given room assignments. EVERY. SINGLE. ROOM. HAD. A. ISSUE. 1. Room didn't have sheets & comforter on the bed, 2. non smoking room wreaked of cigarette smoke so much that my eyes & throat burned 3. The room keys that were given was that of another guest who was ALREADY settled into the room. Unbeknownst to us, and we walked in on them. 4. Pull out couch had stains and smelled like urine. Comforter also had large stains on it. 5. Used toilet paper balled up on the floor, no pillows on bed, no trash can, no bedding for pull out sofa. When all these listed complaints were bought up to the front desk, the woman told me TO MY FACE "if you don't like our hotel you can always stay at the hotel across the street at the Sonesta Hotel across the street". Note: ALL 5 ROOMS CHECKED OUT IMMEDIATELY! We rolled the diced to find lodging. Duke Univ & UNC Chapel Hill both hold graduations on the same weekend and there were no vacancies in the area. Be warned: We booked our recent stay through IHG and I chose a higher rate so 1) I would have the option to cancel, and 2) I didn't want my credit card charged before I arrived. Sooooo.... when we checked in I handed the credit card I planned to use to pay for our stay to the desk clerk. And that's when we were told that the card I had placed on file to hold the reservation had already been charged that morning. According to their manager, who called me after I lodged a complaint with the IHG Customer Service, they (the new management) do this to EVERY SINGLE CUSTOMER. Personally, I find it shady and dishonest when I wasn't given the discounted rate for charging my card prior to check-in. The manager offered me 10,000 IHG points to "resolve" my complaint, but she made it quite clear that they plan to continue doing it. I don't think there is a rating for this particular hotel at 1818 in Durham, NC. We are from PA and looked for a hotel not far from where a memorial service was going to be our eldest brother. The picture on line are fantastic but when you get there the rooms are nothing like the pictures. There is black mold on the wall over the shower. There is dirt everywhere and on everything. Not iron in the closet but there was an ironing board. No hair dryer in the bathroom and when I got one from the front desk it is broke. They were supposed to find a different one and that never happened. The coffee pot is a joke and the powdered creamer is from world war 2. There was a big spider which I killed and another couple had cock roaches in their room. The bathroom sink was stopped up and stuff was coming up when I ran water. There were two lamps in the room only one actually worked. Hopefully I never have to come here again and if I do have to come to North Carolina I will definitely find a hotel that the pictures they posted are actually what everything looks like. This hotel is off my list for good hotels to stay at for anything. read more

There was no soap or shower gel in the bathroom and it took about 30-40 mins to call and have someone come up and fill it, and they didnt even fill it all. This was our first stay at a "suites" style facility. I was attracted by the room rate. We didn't plan on using the kitchen, so that was of no benefit. The room was more spacious than typical motel rooms, and our room was clean. Comfortable bed and chairs, along with good sized TV. I just wasn't prepared for the sign in the bathroom that stated housekeeping service was just once every 7 days. We were only staying 3 nights. I'm accustomed to daily room service and fresh towels placed in the bathroom. They did provide a laundry basket to lug towels down to the desk in exchange for fresh towels. The halls were quiet even though the place was booked. Overall, an OK place. Next visit to the area, I think I'll try another facility. read more

I was on a business trip to Durham on April 21 and after some delays decided to stay over in Durham. I saw the Candlewood Suites in Durham and checked to see if they had any rooms available. The night clerk informed me they had a room available so I proceeded to purchase a room for the night. As requested by the clerk, I produced my drivers license and Visa credit card. After inputting my information into the computer the clerk stated that they could not accept my credit card and she pointed to a posting on the wall informing of acceptable payment methods. I asked her why they could not take my Visa card and she stated it was one of the cards they could not accept. She did not give me a reason why and after reading their posting, I could not figure out why they could not take it. She said I could make an online reservation and pay online using the same credit card. Now, how stupid is that? It was obvious to me that she did not know what she was doing. I exclusively use that card for my travel so I know there is no issue with it. At this point I was too tired to continue dealing with this issue and left. I found a Comfort Inn nearby and had no issue getting a room there using the same card. read more

There are a ton of hotels in the RDU area. I will consider all others in the future before this one. Last night I stayed at this Candlewood; I have stayed at the one on Lead Mine Rd. many times, and it's always great. This location is not great. Their internet connection did not work at all. I called the front desk, and the girl said, "Lots of people are calling me about that. Keep trying. I can't do anything". One of the bath towels stacked by the shower was filthy. It looked like a coal miner wiped their face on it. This morning, when I checked out, the front desk person was shocked to hear that I wasn't given a 1-800 number to call for the internet access issues. I told her that would have been nice 12 hours prior. As I said, there are so many hotels in the area that I will not go back here. read more

I enjoyed the room, my bed and most of the staff. The less than 24 hour notice that the water would be shut off for two hours on a Friday morning was not cool at all. The Management of the hotel added a $200 smoking charge to my final bill, without speaking to me, yet they did call my boss about it, no one knocked on my door to tell me about it. When I checked in I gave my IHG gold rewards number this was not added to the room folio at checkout, when I checked in I made it clear that I would be unplugging the hotel phones and clocks in the room so they were notified that to get a hold of me they would need to knock. The tub wouldn't drain and a 4 minute shower added up to water above the ankle, the kitchen sink had a drainage issue as well. The fact that my employer was called about alleged illegal activity inside my room and yet the police were not called is something I don't take lightly and approaches slander. You don't become a gold member by being a bad guest and after staying in lots of IHG properties yet this is my first accusation of smoking ever, I will admit I am a smoker however I always go outside to do so. If I had been notified of smoking rooms being available I would have stayed in one of those instead, $200 for smoking is ridiculous when the charge for having animals is $75. Not happy with this particular hotel's management, the rest of the staff was awesome in my opinion. Laundry and fitness center should be open 24 hours like they are at other candlewood properties. In short an overzealous manager ruined my visit by robbing me of $200 without any chance of facing my accuser, thankfully I used my AMEX and they will get my money back from these thieves. read more

This is a strong two, but still going with two. The hotel just needs a little work. Rooms seem a little tired, sheets (for some of us) were pilled rather badly. No bathroom ventilation, so on the list it goes. Check-in was a struggle as well. We had semi-funny reservations due to some points and cash stays, but even then...this just took a lot longer than it really should have. Not a huge deal since it was the middle of the afternoon, but it's the kind of thing that would have deeply annoyed me when my tolerance runs low after a late evening flight. Also cripplingly slow WiFi - since these are quasi extended stay spots, if I was stuck here with a week and no connectivity, I would have been an unhappy camper. The rooms were generally OK, but some sprucing up is probably in order. Based on the tired rooms, bad sheets, sluggish WiFi, and the odd check in, I'm going to drop this from a 3 - I'd look elsewhere in the area before coming back again. read more

I just want to start off by saying I am not normally the one to write a bad review, but I can't let this one go. I am absolutely disgusted with my stay. Let's start with room Number 1. Our company checked in on Monday April 8th, 2019. We get checked in to our rooms and everything appears to be "Okay". Please keep in mind, Tuesday/Wednesday we have VERY long days. I wake up Tuesday morning to take a shower (11am), not very satisfied with the cleanliness of the shower but I look passed it and get in. I pull the shower curtain behind me, only to find a dirty wash rag hanging from it. DISGUSTING. This shows be that housekeeping probably didn't even clean the shower as I'm sure the shower curtain was never changed. I go to the front desk to speak to the nice young woman, only to find out that there isn't a manager present! FROM HER CELL PHONE she calls the "Housekeeping manager" to inform them of the situation and she informs me that the situation will be taken care of. I leave for about 3 hours, come back, and the room STILL has not been addressed. Are you kidding me? Clearly this DISGUSTING, UNACCEPTABLE situation was not that urgent. Room Number 2. I go to the front desk and ask to get my room changed because I refuse to wait any longer for someone to come and clean now. (I have to be back at work in a few hours). I'm given a second room only to walk in and the floor look like it hasn't been cleaned in a long time. There are food crumbs all over the floor and a DIRTY crumbled up napkin next to the clean garbage can. HOW IS THIS ACCEPTABLE?! Room Number 3 The manager is now here. Apologizes for the issues and walks my now third room with me. I'm finally getting settled, leave for work, only to return to NO HOUSEKEEPING. No "Do Not Disturb" was ever up. Is this really the service your hotel provides? I've worked for Disney resorts and I know this isn't Disney but these are the basics! How is it that people are checking in to rooms that are PARTIALLY clean?!? This place also needs better leadership. I am completely unsatisfied with how I was taken care of. We just stayed this weekend and had a great experience. For the price we paid, it was awesome! The staff was incredibly friendly, even late at night, and attentive. The room was great, livable, and had a kitchen (which we didn't use but thought was a nice addition). It is about ten minutes outside downtown Durham too! read more

This hotel did not accommodate our infant. We called ahead of time to inform that we'd be arriving late with children. Yet we were running back and forth to the lobby at 2am for sheets and pillows. We found bugs on our sheets. We were not compensated or moved to another room. They expected our children to sleep with the bugs. The staff offered different rates than the managers. Unlike a majority of hotels, they only clean the rooms and change the sheets once a week. I will be giving a reviews online because I was highly dissatisfied with our stay. I haven't written many reviews however I can hardly let this go. Upon arrival, there was a must-pet smell in my room. I didn't think it was an animal smell at first but rather that the a/c wasn't on. As I prepared the sofa bed for my little ones, the blanket had a, what appeared to be blood, handprint on it. Then we noticed pet hair on everything. Moved to another room that had better smell but also pet hair. If it wasn't 2am when we arrived, that would have been our exit. Worst of our experience in a hotel... Ever. I stayed at this Candlewood location for several months, while working in the Raleigh/Durham area. I have rarely felt as welcome and comfortable around a staff and management team, as the one IHG, has developed here. If I could rate this place with zero stars, I would. I recommend that you avoid this place as if it were plague ridden. It had taken 2.5 weeks for me to receive housekeeping service. I'd asked several times and was told that, "I promise we'll get to it tomorrow, we're so sorry" by desk staff. It was insanity to say the least. When I'd needed to drop off my dry cleaning, they'd made it a point to tell me that though they offer same day service, same day service could not always be accommodated. Both attempts required in excess of three days to complete. They'd decided to paint an accent wall during my stay...IN MY ROOM! Yes, they'd done a fantastic job of moving my bed without replacing it where it has been. They'd moved my luggage into the living area and did not place it back to its storage place. So it was incumbent upon me to clean the room and straighten furniture for them...sorry, but I did not see that in the contract. The straw that broke the camel's back was the carpet replacement debacle. I was informed that they would be replacing the carpet on a Friday and that I was to store all of my property off of the floor. While this was inconvenient, I was excited at the idea of having new carpet in my "level 1" accommodations. When I'd returned Friday night, I'd found my room in an incredible state of disarray. The bedding was ripped off of the bed and rolled into a ball. The installers were hungry apparently, as they'd eaten a few cookies I'd left on the counter. Further, there were used paper towels stuffed into my coffee cup and left on the floor. The phone, clock, and filth were left on top of my sundry items on the bathroom counter. The glass I was using to rinse after tooth brushing was left on the floor. Filth was left all over the place. It was at that point that I'd informed them of my intent to leave. I've checked in to another extended stay. Hopefully I'll have better luck as this was by far THE worst hotel experience I've had in 45 years of walking the earth. PS...The wifi stinks! read more

If I could give zero stars I would this hotel started out great but then when it was time for payment to be made and a foundation was helping us they screwed our family. This hotel still has over 1200 dollars in charges between mine and my daughters bank cards all because they in the beginning lost the foundation paperwork. Then the manager Lisa said oh I will get you taken care of all the while she was getting ready to leave for the day and did not tell me but we are sitting here with overdraft fees and she just leaves and doesn't let me know what's going on. So I call this morning and I get told oh she says she is working on it (the famous saying at this hotel) and that was it all while they still have the original charge on my card plus the discounted rate charged on my card plus the discounted rate charged on my card with no refunds being seen by either bank. Now they are getting ready to charge the foundation for our room and so that will be over 1600 dollars for the hotel for 1 room for 4 nights. I would highly suggest no one put there cards on file at this hotel if you have to stay because they will rip you off. read more

Bed is comfy. Good number of cable channels. Location is close to amenities, but in a somewhat rougher area. Wifi is horrible and cuts out randomly which requires you to re-login every time... sometimes multiple times per hour. Their computers downstairs are completely unsecured and are completely unsafe... so if someone steals your identity... it might be because you used an unsafe pc here. Certain room's toilets clog extremely easily and this requires you calling the front desk to bring a plunger... which can sometimes take hours. Some room doors don't lock unless you pull the door tight on your way out... which reminds me that the policy for stolen/lost items is atrocious and terrifying... basically don't leave anything of value in your room because the lock on your door doesn't protect you if someone in cleaning walks in and steals it. I doubt that would happen, but yeah, their policy is a BIG FU to customers if anything happens to your belongings. In short, this place is cheap and a good place to sleep, but don't expect much from it... because you're not paying for much. read more

My rooms have always been clean and well kept, and the lobby and public areas are very clean and nice as well. This is NOT a full service hotel, so if you are looking for a full service hotel that will cater to your every whim then do not stay here...if you are a self sufficient traveler looking for a clean, comfortable, professional place to stay, you should Definitely Give Them a try...you will not regret it! The kitchenettes with the full size refrigerators and the free guest laundry room make it even nicer if you are away from home for any length of time!
