My friend ordered several dozen cupcakes for a wedding shower. She accidentally put the wrong date on the order. The sweet bakery owner showed up at her house with the gorgeous cupcakes and my friend was out of town. She felt HORRIBLE for making such a mistake. She told the bakery owner she was SO sorry. She took full blame for it. Instead of taking the cupcakes back to her bakery and selling them herself, she told my friend to keep them, NO CHARGE and she'll be happy to make another bunch of cupcakes on the right date and deliver them as planned at the same price. The owner said "Hey, life happens and I get it. Just enjoy the cupcakes". My friend was so blown away. She's telling every person she knows about Frosted N' Filled Bakery and wants to be sure as many ppl do business there, as possible. We want to appreciate and support a local business like this who values customers. Thank you!

But it's unusual, so I wasn't sure at first how this was going to go. I got chocolate chip cookies and a loaf of cinnamon bread. (Sweet tooth. He bakes savory and gluten-free items, too.) The cookies are great - more on the chewy than crispy side at first. But then they get crunchy . . . if you don't finish them right away. But the cinnamon bread . . . oh my g*d! Have you ever seen a loaf of bread that was so beautiful, such a work of art, that you didn't want to slice into it? Neither have I, until today. I was worried that it was going to be overpoweringly sugary but it's *not*. Mark, the owner, tells me that it's ambrosial as French toast, but I just had a heel, plain, untoasted, unbuttered, and it was perfect in taste and texture. And the customer service! was superb. This was my first order. It was ready early. Mark let me know I could pick it up the next day as scheduled, or pick it up early. Delayed gratification builds character, but I couldn't wait. It was good to meet him and have a little chat. Very enthusiastic about his work, very accommodating - AND he and Falbo help to feed our homeless neighbors with good food, so he's a good Dubuquer, too.

We stopped by the first night to pickup some coffee, a chocolate chip cookie treat, and a box of macrons to go. The shop is absolutely adorable from entrance to exit! Even before entering we loved the adorable building with perfect blue paint with white trim on the red brick. The building is well maintained and clean. While it is small, they keep the space streamlined and open. The baked good window, the sweet treats fridge, and coffee/tea areas are all distinct with their own personalities and delicious displays. On top of the clean and inviting space, prices were reasonable for such high quality products and staff were friendly and inviting. The line can sometimes be long, but it is worth the wait. Lots to love here! Back to the food, the chocolate chip cookie didn't make it far. We ate it right outside and loved every decadent bite. The cold brew was refreshing and tasty. We ate the macrons throughout the day and loved every bite! My favorites were the lemon and pistachio. My husband's favorites were the vanilla and birthday cake. The flavors were very prominent and delicious. Yum! Our final day, we wanted to try the breakfast! While I got ready at the Airbnb, my husband went to get the 2 Empanada Meal that comes with a fruit cup. We also got cold brew coffee and a Chipa. Everything was so scrumptious and fresh! The fruit cup was a perfect healthy pair to the baked goods. The empanadas were both great. We tried the "Egg, Sausage, & Cheddar" and "Egg White, Tomato, Basil, Spinach & Parmesan" empanadas. Both were great and we couldn't pick a favorite. We were glad we got both. The chipa was also so good...unlike anything we've had before. Per their website, it is a "Savory Cheese Biscuit made with tapioca flour, Cheddar cheese, & Parmesan cheese. Gluten Free." If you have never tried a Chipa, we would recommend it! And once again, the cold brew was perfect! Galena Bakehouse has won our hearts and tummies! We look forward to stopping by the next time we are in town!

You know how sometimes you walk into a restaurant and you know, you know, that it feels right? I…read morehad that experience over the weekend on my first stop at Convivium. Located in a Dubuque neighborhood, this former greenhouse is a great venue with an even better mission. I had heard that owners and co-founders Leslie and Mike Shabali had positively impacted the community and found out first-hand on a holiday weekend Saturday morning. A rectangular footprint can be challenging for some businesses, but Convivium embraces it, and the venue's layout results in an open environment that checks every box. Casual attire, street parking. Greeted at the entry, everyone affiliated with the restaurant had a great way about them, unpretentious and kind. They had a live act, Rianna Marie, performing towards the back, and she was outstanding, a pleasant and unexpected element of our breakfast. The natural lighting is lovely, and the overall layout is inviting and warm. BTW, check out their community calendar near the restrooms! Server Jo was excellent, loving her job and environment, and she REALLY knew the menu. Jo elevated our experienced further and told us more about the restaurant's mission statement. I loved my Farm House Plate, a tasty plate that included scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and sensational rosemary-seasoned red potatoes. My better half thought her White Street Plate was great, especially the sweet potato pancakes! Their mission captivates me and makes me a Convivium supporter from this point, Their commitment is to instill food justice and a feeling of community in Dubuque, and they back up their words. They grow their own, teach people in the community how to cook, enjoy the food and make a difference for those not well off. I love their passion for helping others and will support them moving forward.

We love…read morefarm-to-table restaurant concepts and in-city dining, so we thought Convivium would be an ideal spot to have breakfast on our first day in town. As great as this place could (if not should) be, it will never reach it's potential with the lousy customer service that we experienced. Why do I say this? Read on Yelper. We arrive for breakfast around 9:45 am on Saturday. There was a little bit of a line, which is to be expected at any well known breakfast/brunch establishment, right? The young lady working the register asked if we wanted to pick a table outside, handed us four menus and told us that someone would be out there to help us shortly. We sat at an empty, yet still dirty with plates from the last customers, table that was in the shade. Annnnnd we waited. As staff came out to attend to other customers sitting in the same patio area, the four of us sat there waiting for water, coffee, a smile... heck even an acknowledgement that we were there would have been nice. Seriously, if the Invisible Man was real and sitting at the table, he probably would have had a better chance of being noticed by the servers working that morning. We ended up busing our own table because no staff would bother to do it - I'm very serious. Nearly 20 minutes pass. As another couple comes into the patio, sits down and gets near immediate service with their drink orders, we had it! We entered the restaurant to find out what the problem is for such terrible service?!? The tall, head service member (did not catch her name) had an attitude for sure with her question "Did one of us seat you?" and we answered that "No, your host teammate told us to grab the table." She damn near rolled her eyes. Finally, lightening struck... someone showed up to give us water, wipe the table, and take our order. But don't get your hopes up that this was the end of bad service. Regrettably, it was not. We waited nearly 25 more minutes to get our order of eggs, potatoes, bacon, and sausage. Tough order for a breakfast place, don'tcha think? Out comes the food... without utensils to eat with. 4 mins of watching your food get cold motivated us to good inside and get our own utensils. As we did, the head member walks out with the items. Now - let's shift to the one positive part of the experience and that of course is the food. To show you that I am a reasonable reviewer, I will tell you that the meal was very tasty, cooked to order, and satisfying (especially when you're starving!). When I said at the beginning that this place can be great, the food is the reason why. After a Friday night of fun, a place like Convivium is just what you want for a Saturday breakfast before an afternoon of NCAA College Football - you know what I mean? But until management decides to hold the staff accountable for this terrible customer service, Convivium will be closed in less than 5 years (my prediction). Read some of the other reviews... we share the same general opinion. And this is coming from someone that values restaurant concepts like this one. Get it together before its too late, Convivium.
