Holiday Inn Express Watertown - Breakfast Room

If I could travel but still enjoy the comforts of my own home, I would. Alas, that's not how reality works, so this Holiday Inn was a decent option when I had to travel for a family member's wedding. My family shared rooms close together, and I think altogether our experience was pretty smooth. My brother and I had plenty of space in the room that we shared; we could spread out and get ourselves organized for the big day. The room was kept clean the entire weekend. And the wi-fi was fairly consistent, too, which I'm always grateful for in a hotel. That said, the layout of the hotel is admittedly...not the most logical thing I've ever seen. Elevators aren't where you expect them to be (and are slow), and I got a fair number of steps in my day just strolling from the lobby, up the stairs, down a long hall, to my hotel room. There's also a very small area for a continental breakfast in the lobby - and I do mean small; it didn't look like there was even room for the basics to me, although I never visited during breakfast hours to confirm that hunch. 3.5 stars from me. The hotel layout is odd, and I could always do with a softer bed; but it was a decent enough stay, especially for this particular location.

The couch/sofa was old and pilled; I just didn't use it. The check in was pretty easy. Shout out to Rebecca, who was working the front desk/service area while I stayed. She was really helpful with (1) food, (2) getting my reservation to add an extra day and (3) finding the food I ordered from a nearby restaurant. She even offered plates and plastic cutlery. Hero of the weekend. The negatives are the noise -- kids running up and down the hallways and screaming. I had asked for a remote far away spot when I checked in, but ended up right by the elevator and in a loud corridor. Also, nobody was wearing masks in the hotel. Staff were, yes, and they give you a baby-size hand sanitizer. But the guests at this hotel didn't follow signage. I do wish there were more hand sanitizers around and enforcing masks in public areas.

But the temperature never changed. It was still ice cold and no one could go in it which was very disappointing. Especially Since we were there for my granddaughter's fifth birthday. The pool and the whirlpool were adequate temperature, but they seem old and the floor was flaking off and did not seem very clean. I don't think we will go back again..

Sweet Autumn Inn - Everson Room

I was looking for a place to spend the night in Lake Mills and the choices seemed pretty limited…read more Luckily I found Sweet Autumn Inn. My stay was for a single night in July 2011. I booked The Everson Room. The house is easy to find as it is right on the main road south of town. It was set far enough back though, so traffic noise was not a problem. Guest parking is in the rear of the house. The guest entrance is in the front. So you get to go for a short walk to get from one to the other. After ringing the doorbell, we were met at the front door by Terri, the innkeeper. She cheerfully got us checked in and gave a quick tour of the house. The house smelled of baking cookies. Sweet Autumn Inn is much smaller than some of the bed and breakfasts that I have stayed at, but let's just call it cozy. It felt very intimate, like I was visiting my mother's house. There are only 3 guest rooms, so it is not like the place was crawling with people. During my stay I only saw one other couple and that was at breakfast. The Everson room was lovely. It was tastefully decorated with just enough old fashioned charm to make you feel comfortable without feeling like you were in an old antique store. There was enough room to move around, but not a lot. The attached bathroom was clean, but basic. It didn't really match the character of the rest of the room. The bed was very comfortable and I slept wonderfully. The room came with its own window unit A/C and a ceiling fan so I was able to get the temperature to be just what I wanted. There was not a TV in the room. This was not a big deal to me, but some people need one. (There was a TV downstairs in a common room.) I didn't spend a lot of time in the house because we had plans to visit Tyranena Brewing. It turns out that when Terri is not running her wonderful B&B, she works part-time for Tyranena. She was very enthusiastic about the beer and gave us some tips before we headed out. Breakfast was served promptly at 9AM in the dining room. Terri had asked us the day before if we had any dietary restrictions or special requests. Since we are not picky eaters, we assured her that we would love whatever she served. Breakfast was delicious. There was a selection of juices and coffee. We started with some fresh berries and a dollop of honey yogurt. Then a hazelnut pastry, before jumping into the main course which was some kind of multilayer baked version of french toast with bits of ham in it. We ended our stay by chatting with Terri about beer, the house and Lake Mills in general. She was a very engaging host, which always makes a B&B stay even better. Overall, I would definitely recommend Sweet Autumn Inn and I know where I will be staying the next time I am in Lake Mills.

Our room was cozy with a fireplace and AC unit. I loved the decor and the access to a guest fridge (great to store medication or snacks). We got into town late and had trouble with the closed main road but Teri's help got us there easily, and she even gave us some late night dinner recommendations. Perfect short visit for a mini getaway. Hope to visit again soon.

Loppy's is a stop that would have never been on my radar except for little league baseball (right around the corner) and the dinner hour. We were hungry and Loppy's seemed to be one of the few viable options in the greater thriving downtown of Ixonia. Loppy's is a quite dated locals establishment. They must be doing well for themselves because the bar was packed on our Thursday evening visit. There are a few tables off the bar and the above described patio has a few tables as well. Just watch the kids when the train goes through. $8.50 Pulled pork plate & $.45 wing special on Thursdays. Both were pretty good and typical for what you'd expect from bar fare. Decent place to stop on a pass through and likely more pleasant if you're one of the locals.

There is not a large selection of good beer on tap, and no grilled food on Saturday nights. HOWEVER, the handmade pizza is very good with ample toppings. A new improvement, finally, is the ability to process payment with credit cards! Hallelujah, technology and modern times at this historic place. $10 minimum on the credit cards, and they don't cash checks, FYI.
