Given that other people were sitting in the same area and were not addressed, I also couldn't help but feel that race may have played a role in why we were treated differently. I cannot say what her intentions were, but that was how the interaction made me feel. I left the store because the situation had become uncomfortable. If she had calmly explained the policy and addressed everyone sitting in that area equally, I would have simply said, "Thank you, where is the designated sitting area?" and moved without any issue. Unfortunately, because of the way this was handled, I will be choosing HomeGoods and other stores in the future.
