If you can't get in to see your family doctor or don't have a family doctor, the Family Focus…read moreclinic is the perfect solution. Open 7 days a week, the clinic is staffed by a roster of family docs in four locations. I am a frequenter of the Spring Garden location, usually when I suspect one of my kids has an ear infection and it's after our doctor's regular office hours and the wait at the ER is too long. While it is a "walk-in"clinic, you'd be wise to call ahead to book an appointment. Calling ahead is particularly useful on the weekends (on the weekends, you can call an hour before opening) when the clinic seems the busiest and you might not be able to walk in because all the time slots are booked. The longest I've waited with a booked appointment is 45 minutes. Same as with some regular family doctor practices, but generally you'll wait ten to fifteen minutes--a short time compared to the hours some of the walk-in patients wait. The doctors, for the most part, are great. I've had some excellent doctors with impressive diagnostic skills who took the time to really work through a complicated middle ear issue one of my daughters had. I've also had some doctors who were less impressive but still go the job done. The regular population at this clinic seems to be adults and old people so some of the docs are not so used to dealing with children. I had one doctor who squeezed us in right before closing time, meaning she stayed late to examine my daughter's very sore ear. I was very impressed! Doctors do change shift every 4 to 5 hours so if you need a repeat visit, be sure to ask when that particular doctor is working. While the Family focus is not meant to be a replacement for a regular family doctor, it's convenient and provides great care. If you can, though, make an appointment.

went into the walk in to check on lingering tingling sensations in my breast and the male doctor…read morecompletely dismissed that and said it's no cause for concern at all. when asked if i had done a self assessment I responded with "yes, but l'm not sure what kind of lumps to feel for so I'm not sure, it seems the same?" and he simply said I was fine. no assessment. no telling what kind of lump I SHOULD be looking for. I didn't even take off my jacket. after, I asked to see if my ankle is worse due to cartilage lost and a new pain I haven't felt before and all he said is i should "take rest because i'm healing slower" when I referred again to the fact it's not a sprain, it's worn down cartilage (that will not heal or regenerate) he doubled down that I simply need to rest more than previously. it all felt like a huge waste of time and effort. I would've preferred waiting 8 hours in an emergency room to see a doctor who will actually check me out so that I can confidently know if I was fine or not. I will not be going ever again. Already as a black woman I must advocate for my own health time and again because people do not believe me or take me seriously, this was one of those moments.

The front-line staff are friendly and quick. There's one lady who has been there as long as I can remember - and she remembers who we are! One caution - it can sometimes be very difficult to get through their phones. They don't take messages and phones are only open Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30 (closed for lunch)so be patient when you're calling - the hassle is worth it! As a family, we've seen numerous doctors from this practice over the years. They have all been wonderful! For the last 10-15 years, Dr. Peter Brennan has been our family doctor. He is fantastic! He is a great listener, never pushes aside your concerns, always explains his thoughts/process/medications and is never shy to say "Well, I don't know. Let's refer you to someone else that can help." He's also a nice man and has a great sense of humour. I would recommend this practice to ANYONE that needs a doctor. I can't be sure they're taking new patients but it wouldn't hurt to call - they're awesome!

This practice is ... okay. I like the doctors, but the office itself is wanting…read more The waiting area is large, but cut in two. The reception desk is in the middle and while the staff are nice enough, they aren't the most personable. The office layout consists of (what appear to be) two separate hallways of offices with a waiting area for each hallway. The problem is, if the area closest to your doctor's office is full, you have to wait in the other and hope you hear your doctor call your name. Perhaps because this practice doubles as a walk-in clinic, the staff don't call each patient and take them to the exam room, which has always been the norm with my previous GPs. It's also not the cleanest waiting room. My doctor is great, if a bit shy and quiet (then again, so am I). I have seen one other doctor in this practice and he was efficient and personable. I would recommend this practice as the three-star rating is more for the pre-appointment experience; I have had nothing but pleasnt experiences with the GPs.

Parkland is where appts are booked along with a walk in clinic until 4 pm. Parkwest is open 9-9 daily seeing all walk in patients. It is open 7 days a week. Varying hours on weekends and Holidays. I always arrive at 7 to be given a number at 8:30 to maybe be seen at around 10:30. It's a long process, but much faster than other walk in clinics in Halifax from my experience. It really sucks that it takes out so much time from a day, especially if you're looking for prescription refills or small / quick procedures or check ups. The service is fine. The doctor is kind and efficient. It's nothing to write home about, but again- I can imagine everyone working in this field being overwhelmed and having to put up with a lot of impatience and harsh words. I try to redirect my frustration at the overall health system we have in place rather than the individual. I was unimpressed with the amount of ants everywhere - I don't know if this is because of the clinic being inside of Superstore, the trash not being taken out, or some other reason. It also doesn't smell clean, which is off putting for a clinic. When I wait for so long, especially to have someone look after my health, I want to feel... clean? Sanitary? I have come here a few times, but was unimpressed with my most recent visit due to the ants and state of the clinic.
