This is a very solid, old school sandwich shop. It really reminds me of grimy Chicago places. My wife and I each got various sizes on the "Steak Bomber" - which is perhaps a Rochester take on a Philly Cheese steak. Soft roll, griddle cooked steak, provelone, lettuce tomato mayo. 5 *'s My son got a gravy sandwich - big squares of white bread, roast beef in between, covered in gravy. He loved it. After reading other reviews, I think some people were somehow not expecting "hole in the wall" vibes, but you should. Also it was funny - it was a weird time on a Monday, and we were the only ones in there - the dude gave us a number, and was like, I'm gonna call out the number. There is only one person who works there and I believe he's the owner. He is very slow, doesn't appear to want your business and the food is way overpriced for the portion size. It wasn't that way even 5 years ago when we would go in while on duty with the Police Department. I got a medium sized Campi's Steak Bomber with a side order of fries and it did not disappoint. The place is no-frills and divey with a surprising bout of free wifi. You order at the counter and they have a menu full of burgers, dogs and their famous steak sandwich. The hoagie was delightful -- full of grilled meat, onions and sweet peppers (although spicy peppers were also a choice). I ate it quickly and heartily and still have a coronary or two to talk about it. All in all, it's tasty drunk food, but if you're not drunk - you may just enjoy the indulgence as well. read more

This was my first time here. If I hadn't looked at it online before I went, I probably would have driven right by. Look out for their sign. It is a lot bigger inside than it looks from the outside. The paper menus they have on the wall has more info than the menu boards that they have. I am vegetarian, so I just wanted a cheese sub. I got cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, and a side of macaroni salad. I got a regular, and it was huge! It was reasonably priced, and it was ready fast. The sub was really good! Good bread, good cheese, and good mayo. I'd definitely eat one again, and like I said, the regular size was a lot of food. The macaroni salad wasn't my favorite, but it was ok. I prefer a creamier sauce on it, but it was fine.. I just wouldn't get it again. If you like subs, it's definitely worth a stop here. I would get it to go, but there is plenty of seating, The TV was showing it's age, lol, but I'm more concerned about the food than what TV they have. And they had pictures on the wall from when Man vs Food was there, which I didn't know before I went. That's pretty cool. read more

Visiting my daughter in Rochester and decided to stop in this place and get a sandwich. Was the best decision I've ever made! Since being up in New York all the Takeaway has been horrible and disappointing as if people have been giving you their leftovers. Walked in this old school joint and had the best sandwich I've had in a really really long time. My son had the haddock plate and it was huge! I couldn't even eat half my sandwich. The guy running the place is the classic consummate courteous old school gentleman Please support your local businesses and make sure that they are surviving during this 2020 COVID-19. I had a few hungry people with me at the University of Rochester the other night. I offered to buy them dinner to go since they were heading to a hotel and I wasn't. I remembered the old standby Campi's "where sandwich is king"! I used to go here in college and have been back just once about 5 years ago- honestly it is kind of a step back in time because the place hasn't changed that much. The best thing about that is the food is plentiful and still great. They all got steak sandwiches- one of the was the Bomber- made on about a 10" round roll- it's huge! They ordered with hot peppers , onions and meat hot sauce. Delicious and enough for 2 meals. They also make "sloppy plates" like a garbage plate , lots of fried goodies like clams and fish fries, etc. Subs, hots, wings- you name it- they have it! And the mother/daughter team of "Princess" on the grill and "little Princess" on the cash register were delightful. I'd recommend Campis if you are hungry for this type of food - it's still the same as it ever was! read more

Not sure why people say this place has gone down hill...Even my mom says it's not like it was back in the day. Well i never tried this place in the 80's, so i have nothing to compare the present to. All i know is from what i have had...and what i've had is really good. The Steak Bomber. The Original on the Round bread....So good and so unique. I don't really know of any other place around here who has that bread. I've had round italian bread before from various bakeries..but it doesn't taste like the round bread at Campi's. It really makes the steak bomber. I know some have said the bread is not what it used to be...and that may be true. To me though it's what keeps me coming back. The Steak is the real deal too...None of that steakum crap. Only thing i can think of is why people might have gave this place a bad review is they didnt pay for the extras that they usually get for "free" at other places where they go for their steak sub. Even though the steak bomber here is 8.50...it's more like 11 dollars when you add Cheese, Mushrooms, And meat hotsauce or some other kind of sauce. And i am ok with that, because i expect to pay somewhere in the ball park of 10 dollars for a Large Steak Sub. If there is a word of caution...I would say Thier steak Bomber can get pretty salty(depending how you order yours). Also greasy too...but to me a steak sub(bomber) should be greasy. read more

The guys working here had a crush on me, either that or they were just a little "Campi" and flirty, and either way, I have to admit, it turned me on. Got the proverbial juices flowing. Got me really hot and wet. I could pretty much taste the salt. Oh wait, I stopped talking about my experience with the server and switched over to the sandwich. The Steak Bomber sandwich is very hot, very wet, very juicy, very bad for you, and very salty. Unfortunately, despite it having all the aforementioned things going for it, which would usually lead to a 5/5 rating from me since I love that sh**, I'm only giving it a four. The sauce was a bit sweet, the bread was just a bit *too* drenched and soggy, and there was something missing... other than my underwear, class, and respectable language, I mean. You can get it Campi's Style or not... I'm not sure what the difference is. They both look wet as hell to me. It might be that Campi's style has extra stuff on it, extra Italian sauce... you'll have to ask them. The price was good... bargain basement $5-ish for a pretty big hunk of meat juice. Sort of like the Turkish Bathhouses of San Francisco back in the early 1970s. But that's another story. What Campi's lacks in charm, well, it lacks in charm. Virtually unchanged since the 70's, they have made a business out of supplying Rochesterians with Bomber steak sandwiches and Mama burgers. Not to be out done by the plate houses, they also make a "Sloppy Plate" that stands up tot he best of them. You won't be impressed with the decor, nor will you want to take a date there (unless you're on the "down low"). Still, they deliver massive amounts of beefy food for not much $$. I have been visiting this restaurant for over 30 years. The price, food and service are the best! When my husband was alive we use to take the children here when they were little. The youngest one is now 36 and it is a joy to still go to lunch there. It may not be fancy, but it is clean. I'm happy they are surviving through Covid and I recommend everyone to support them. Finally made it to Campis. I know Fatam Richman stopped here, but he's never quite been the purveyor of the best restaurants in the cities he's been in. Quite frankly, with all the places Rochester had to offer, I'm not sure why Campis was chosen. Went with their "signature dish," the steak bomber. The meat itself was very flavorful. Decent portion for the price. I'm sorry, but the round "bun" they used really downgraded the sandwich. It was too flat, not airy, and tasteless. Very, very dry. Rochester has at least 3 places (martusciello, petrillo, dipaulo) that make amazing breads for sandwiches, subs, burgers, etc. that make amazing items that would put this sandwich over the top. The decor inside was extremely outdated, although I doubt many people ever eat inside. It smelled like a grandparents basement in the dining area. Not sure if I would ever return. The meat was excellent, but not all the ducks were in a row for the mind blowing sandwich that they COULD have here. read more

The phone and in person service was pretty terrible. I mean, I understand it's humid out and was about two hours from closing, but it was still pretty uninviting for a first visit. We got two steak bombers, a chicken parm bomber, and chicken fingers/fries. Unfortunately they completely forgot to make the fingers and fries at all until after I was there to pick up my order. The steak bombers were ok - my oldest and I weren't wowed.. A lot of food for your buck, but I don't know if it's a better value than the subs or not. Gf liked the chicken fingers, not the fries. My youngest only took a few bites of the chicken parm bomber but said it was good. Overall I may try again, but not really in a rush to. read more

A Rochester original, and well worth the quick trip to this restaurant still in the same building, for what seems like forever. This not a fancy, high end place, this a place to come.ans be wowed by what they're famous for, their chopped steak! While the building is older, it's an interesting place to be in, even if I was the only person in there at the moment. The mix of farmhouse implements and old time diner setup is kinda funky, and a little different, but still warmish. Enough about that. Let's talk the foods. Outside of their delicious steak sandwiches, they do pasta dishes and specials, sloppy plates (their take on the garbage plate), fried foods, fish and chips, old fashioned milk shakes, burgers, Italian sausage, hots, clams...and on and on. My choice was the steak bomber. A mountain of chopped steak on a giant round roll with mushrooms, peppers, meat sauce and mozzarella. This is not for the faint of heart. Campi's is a classic greasy spoon. I was shocked to learn that there are so few reviews on such an older legendary restaurant in town. Campi's has been around forever and is very well known for steak subs. My mom often recalls stories of Campi's glory days back in the 70s and how packed the restaurant was each night. To this very day she still craves the occasional steak bomber or Friday fish fry. Over the years, this has been a staple in the community for many Rochesterians. However with the emersion of college town, eateries on Mt. Hope and even Brooks Landing, Campi's looks a bit forgotten. There isn't a whole lot on the menu if you are vegetarian or pescatarian, however if you like meat, then you'll probably find something here. As a kid, I would eat here fairly frequently. My husband loves their bomber which is enough for at least two meals. I tried their eggplant bomber. It was okay, but nothing to write home about. I'd at least recommend trying it for the experience and then crossing it off your bucket list. read more

I would say that Rochester has three classic "dive" restaurants, and this is one of them (the other two being Sal's Birdland and Nick Tahous). When you want a ground steak sandwich (like a Philly cheesesteak), you come here. They are located conveniently off of I-390 and have great hours. But the food is what you care about, I am sure. I have come here many times since I was a kid and I love their steak "Bomber" sandwich. As a child, I remembered the sandwich being as large as the paper plate it was served on. As an adult, my memory has been tempered by time but the sandwich is still nearly that large. If you can eat it in one sitting you likely won't be able to leave your booth. It comes with the option for different types of cheeses (I like mozz), vegetables like onions and pepper (I like mushrooms), and sauces. They have your typical sides like french fries, salads, and fried mushrooms (which you don't find many places anymore) and all are great. The setting is straight out of an old movie. Old booth tables, classic arcade games, dim lights, and plastic silverware complete the scene. I am not sure if it has changed at all in 20 years, and I hope it never does! read more

This place is not my kind of place. I got the mushroom and pepper sandwich. Given the name, I expected the sandwich to have mushroom and peppers as it's filling. It did, but it also had meat inside, which I wasn't expecting. Oh well. The sandwich was adequate, though it was over-salted and the meat didn't seem fresh. I enjoyed it anyways. Another thing that struck me about this place was its cleanliness. There was a bucket with brownish water in the dining area to catch drips coming from the ceiling. And the restroom was a bit unsettling. The floor was wet and covered in grime, the lid to the toilet was halfway on, and there weren't any paper towels or hand dryers. Peruse old memorabilia and clippings on the wall (for instance, Adam Richman's beaming fake smile as he dives into a steak bomber) as you wait for your behemoth sandwich to be crafted. Take your three pounds of food and tread safely to the back of the place to eat where it's so dark you can't see a damn thing. Sit and chomp on your bomber with grease running out the corners of your mouth as you contemplate that DiBellas probably would have been a better choice. Think guiltily about the workout session that awaits you to make up for this indiscretion. Laugh at the irony because you're going home to nap and have no intention of working out anytime soon. A bit of a hole in the wall place but I have it a shot. Their claim to fame is the steak sub... mine was a bit overcooked and crispy I'd give it a 3/5 at best. I have to say that I was turned off by the actual restaurant itself. The bathrooms were filthy - I actually walked out without using it once I looked inside. The tables and benches were dirty and greasy like they hadn't been cleaned in a while. There are electrical wires hanging down and the TV didn't work. I will not be returning. read more

I have passed this place for 20 years and finally decided to give it a try. I ordered the Bomber with onions, peppers, mushrooms and meat hot sauce. I'd have to be str8 up and say I definitely wouldn't go back. It honestly had no flavor other than the hot sauce which I don't think is seasoned well at all. It was very greasy(which I expected from a dive and that's why I went) but even the grease didn't negate the dry bread. It just wasn't anything I would want to eat again. First went to Campi's around '77. My step dad said he had a neat place to show me that he thought I'd like. He was right. For a while we used to go with some regularity back then but just for a couple years. Now I hit the place up every year or two. It's EXACTLY the same as it was the first time I went. No joke. Well, in all reality there are some new employees, the prices have gone up a bit and the booths have been re-covered, but that's about it. I didn't try the bomber until I got older, but I ate plenty of juniors, burgers and hot dogs when I was a kid. But from my memories, the BIG one tastes just like the juniors I ate so even the flavors are the same. Funny story: One time back when I was going regularly as a kid, my mother was really hungry and she ordered a burger with everything on it. I assume my step dad decided to play a joke on her based on what happened next. After putting in our orders at the counter, she and I were sitting at a booth and he slid a tray with her order in front of her. She gasped at the height of her burger, lifted up the top bun, said what the *bleep* and started laughing her butt off. After seeing the pile of food in front of her I couldn't help but join. A couple of years ago I saw Campi's featured on Man vs. Food and I have always had it on my list of places that I need to go to in Rochester, but for some reason I could never "find the time". Well, today was the day and I have to admit that I am so disappointed in all of the missed luncheons over the years that I could have had at Campi's! SO GOOD! The woman behind the counter told me they're famous for their steak sandwiches... I tried the junior steak sandwich and it was amazing. I'll be back soon, with friends!! Campi's IS the best. People talk about Tahoe's, but they have gone way downhill....a long time ago. Campi's is as it always has been.....Fantastic!
