I wasn't expecting California-level pricing, but the costs here were surprisingly affordable--far lower than I'd feared. Cost has been the main reason I've put off dental care for so long, and now I regret not coming sooner! I called several offices, and many told me upfront that they didn't accept Guardian. When I contacted Spring Hill Smiles, they told me they did accept Guardian and even asked for my insurance information over the phone. I provided it, and we scheduled an appointment. When I arrived, I gave them my insurance card, which they scanned before having me complete the standard paperwork. Nothing was said about being out-of-network or that they didn't actually take my insurance. During the visit, they performed a number of X-rays and a cleaning. They asked if I wanted fluoride treatment, noting it would be an additional charge since insurance didn't cover it. I declined. I also met with the dentist to discuss a treatment plan that included a filling and two cosmetic procedures. We reviewed what would and wouldn't be covered by insurance, and I was given a printed breakdown before scheduling the follow-up. About a month later, I was shocked to receive a bill for over $500--because, as it turns out, they don't accept Guardian insurance. When I reached out via phone and email, the response I received was underwhelming: "We understand your disappointment, and while our office is out-of-network with Guardian, we would like to explore options to help you manage the balance. We can offer an interest-free payment plan for up to four months, splitting the payments into $143.00 per month." While they framed this as helpful, it misses the point entirely. At no point was I told they were out-of-network. If I had known, I never would have gone there. The lack of transparency and poor communication are unacceptable, and I feel taken advantage of.

Our middle child was struggling to calm down and because they were trying to keep their schedule they had to abort my son's procedure and we were still charged the $300 sedation fee for him. My wife says the dental assistant was very rude and only one staff member was apologetic. Dr. Knoell diagnosed my 2 year old son with an enamel defect causing cavities and immediately…read morerecommended surgery at a "brand new surgery center" that he even mentioned he has financial stake in (!!!! major red flag) When I asked if it would be at all possible for me or my husband to be with my son while he was in surgery, Dr. Knoell actually LAUGHED - and said "Don't even ask that question." He really stressed urgency, and that my son's four teeth may die before we get him into surgery. He kept saying there was nothing he could do, except major surgery under general anesthesia. I left devastated. I was in a panic all day, frantically calling other dental surgeons to try and get on their waiting list for surgery just in case we can be seen sooner elsewhere. I connected with a practice in Columbia which he had recommended and they saw my son that day. After an in depth examination including x rays (which Dr Knoell did not suggest or recommend at any point!!) the dentist at this practice concluded that my son has no cavities at all, and instead has staining from an iron multivitamin he takes daily. I actually sobbed with relief. It is egregious that Dr. Knoell would neglect to confirm whether or not my son actually had cavities or truly a need for significant dental surgery requiring IV sedation. He was so quick to recommend the surgery and stress the urgency, but then also said he had no idea if he would get him in before the teeth die. This is gross negligence on his part. I will not be returning to this office and will certainly never recommend it. I would hate for other families to be pressured into unnecessary surgery on their small children purely because this man has financial stake in a new surgery center. ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPINION!
