A few sitting areas are sprinkled throughout. As someone who avoids small talk and parent interactions, I try to show up at the crack of dawn. There will still be folks here, but at least you aren't elbow to elbow. It's difficult to bring my kids to these swimming areas without the intention of swimming. I prefer for my kids to swim at Little Campbell Lake (near Kincaid Park), instead.

This park has no parking lot- you would have no reason to visit it unless you live in this middle class neighborhood. It is a traditional park with 4 picnic tables and grills, swings and a small playset. I find this a questionable choice for a playground since there is a steep drop-off to the swift Campbell creek on the southside of the park- turn your back on your toddler and their gone downstream. Bring a leash. For older kids, on the other side of the park, there is a shallow area that is idea for wading, but the water is swift, so supervision is definitely recommended.

This park is located in Anchorage's Mountainview Neighborhood, just outside of downtown. The park…read morewas originally developed as military housing in the 1940's. The park as you see it today was developed in the 1980s. It spans 66 acres and is leased from the Joint Base Elemendorf-Richardson by the municipality of Anchorage. It is a decent park, but pales slightly in comparison to the park that is located right next to it. It has a couple of parking areas, with ample parking. But beware, one of the parking areas near the basketball court has some huge pot holes. The park also has a 9-hole disc golf course that is pretty decent. You will find a good multi-use field here that has football uprights and can be used for a variety of activities including soccer, football, playing catch, ultimate frisbee, or flying a kite. The little league baseball field there is trashed. There is a bunch of trash in the dugout and the bleachers are busted and turned upside down. However, it could still be used in a pinch. The full basketball court is suffering from the same neglect. The court itself is in decent shape, but the rims are missing nets. You will be chasing the ball all day if you play on that court. You will find a bunch of picnic tables scattered among the park's green space and a decent partially paved/partially natural trail. There is rumored to be a community garden, but I did not see it. That may be due to me visiting in very early Spring. Now let's talk about what the park does not have. It does not have playground equipment, nor does it have a restroom facility. This park is ok and does have a few things its neighboring park does not have such as a multi-use field or disc golf. That park has some features that this one does not have like a playground area and picnic shelters. So, ultimately, they are a good compliment to each other. This park does need some attention and I will give them the benefit of the doubt that it was in the shape that it was in due to being off season.

Potter Marsh was my last activity in Alaska. Having arrived back in Anchorage, following an epic…read moreroad trip back from Seward, I was staying my last night near the airport before an early flight the next day. Wanting to stretch my legs, I had decided to make an after dinner stop at Potter Marsh. Having passed it earlier in the day, I had seen a large bull moose from the road, as he enjoyed grazing in the tall grasses. Later on, when I actually had time to stop, no moose sightings. However, the walk along the well maintained boardwalk offered epic views and a peaceful, quiet evening walk. Lots of locals out enjoying the first sunny day, all week. Nicely done placards with info and complimentary spotting scopes to see any visiting bird life. It's a quick but worthy stop in Anchorage if you are looking for a simple outdoor activity.

I used to live about a quarter mile from this park and had no idea it was there. I became aware of…read morethe park as a result of the Fish Creek Festival. This park is not much more than an open field and a pavilion, which makes it great for gatherings but not much else. There is a horrifically bad bike trail around this park that is an absolute nightmare of frost heaves. The pathetic remnants of Fish Creek also surrounding this park are nothing more than a swamp now. If community efforts to "daylight" Fish Creek come to fruition, this one day may be a much improved community park.

Right now, for the third consecutive year (maybe it's the fourth actually... its been going on for…read moreso long, Ive lost track) 42nd Ave is under construction. And its finally in front of Folker Park. And boy oh boy has the city utterly demolished some of the best things about this park. Accessibility path? Gone. Garden controlled by the community? Gone. Benches? Gone. Beautiful trees lining the entry path, including a VERY old spruce (probably about 100 years old, i couldn't count all the rings) GONE. I suppose some things may be replaced when they're done the project, who knows. But the trees that made our street so lovely are gone forever. When we asked for sidewalks, we only meant we needed them on ONE side of the street. I guess we weren't specific enough. Now we have sidewalks with nothing to look at but barren asphalt. Its like a mini Spenard. Sigh.
