Saturday evening turned out to be a good time to walk the grounds of the Historic Campbell County Courthouse in Rustburg. Built between 1848 and 1851, this two-story Greek Revival landmark shows off its red brick, Doric-columned portico, and the octagonal cupola beautifully when the sun hits it right. The courthouse served as Campbell County's seat of justice until 1991, and today it operates as the Historic Courthouse Museum, managed by the Campbell County Historical Society.
Inside, you'll find nine exhibit rooms filled with local artifacts, genealogical materials, period furnishings, and displays that trace Campbell County's civic and cultural history. The restored courtroom is the centerpiece.
Don't skip walking the grounds. The museum's setting includes preservation work and one of the most charming touches is how they retained the original signage from the old railroad trestle, now incorporated into the landscape as a nod to Rustburg's transportation past.
Campbell County, founded in 1781 and named for General William Campbell, has had Rustburg as its county seat since 1783, and this courthouse embodies that long civic continuity. Between the architecture, the museum exhibits, and the warm evening light on the brick, it's a rewarding stop for anyone exploring Virginia's historic courthouses.
