My wife and I just completed our second trip down to the Spring Grove Farm. We liked it so much…read morethe first time 6 months ago we decided to give them a 2 night stay this time. This place is great, you can spend HOURS just looking through each of their rooms. We have been lucky and been the only people staying there both trips down (damn economy). The Sayers are awesome hosts and give you free reign of the house to explore as you want. The grounds are just beautiful. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quaint B&B in So VA. However do NOT use google maps to get here, print out the directions off of their website! And ask for the blueberry waffles for breakfast!

We visited for one night in the dogwood cottage recently. It was a great cottage. The only…read moreproblem we had was with the smell on the first floor. The smell was like a concentrated version of a camp smell - musty and overbearing. We would not stay in the cottage again, but we would definitely stay in the main hotel. What a place. It wasn't clear where to enter. I went to what I thought was the entrance and the door was locked. I tried at another entrance in the middle and the door was locked. I went around to the northern side and five dogs came up to greet me all barking like they were going to chomp on me. I was starting to get worried about the place. Anyway, they didn't bite, but I didn't like the feeling of whether they would bite me or not while walking in to a side entrance that didn't even look like an entrance and trying to figure out how to check-in. I think the entrance/check-in needs some tightening up because our stay was great. They were very nice people, friendly and all. Great breakfast. Lot's of books. Oh and there is no TV in the dogwood cottage, but I knew that going in and it didn't bother me, but if you're addicted to TV the dogwood cottage is definitely not for you. Lot's of books and we were loaned a collection set of the civil war that was excellent for our evening perusal prior to retiring for the night. I definitely recommend this place and agree that you can't follow Google maps or you will end up somewhere, but not near the hotel. We would visit again, but not staying in that dogwood cottage, which by the way has the original floor they said back when it was a one-story building where they stored corn, husks and all to feed the animals on the farm I think they said. Probably why that smell on the first floor although it was fine on the second floor where the bedroom was, which by the way was very nice. So definitely plan to stay here if you are visiting Appomattox! =)

How have I never reviewed Hill Top when I have been going for 8 years?!?…read more I love this place. The servers are knowledge and friendly, and their wines and meads are so unique and well made. You can do a tasting of 8 of their wines and meads for $5, which is a great option if you have never been before. Hill Top is unique because it makes wines out of fruit, so you'll have wine here that you will never had anywhere else. I love their sweet melon wine, hunter's moon mead, and dragon's blood mead, among many others. Hill Top also has a great outdoor seating area where you can watch the goats and working dogs around the farm, with great views.

Hill Top is a fan fave for me!…read more I wish they'd attend Norfolk VA wine festival again, I miss them so much. My husband and I visited on the Labor Day weekend. I have to always put Hill Top on my list when I am in the area. I ended up leaving with 12 bottles of wine and a jar of the wild flower honey. I wish they'd attend Norfolk VA wine festival again, I miss them so much! Emily "The traveling nurse", ended up assisting us during our time there. She was very welcoming, upfront and honest with her recommendations for our 2 flights that we selected. We chose from meads and berry wines as well. Emily didn't steer us wrong at all. After ordering we sat outside and enjoyed the breeze. Both flights came with oyster crackers and chocolate covered almonds. The Lavender and Persimmons was my fave selection. However, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to snag some bottles of Madison to go. The goats on site were too cute as well! I wish they'd attend Norfolk VA wine festival again, I miss them so much!

There was "a lot to do," but for me, the "staples" of a fall festival were missing... no corn pit,…read moreno barrel train for the kids, no hay ride, and no big stacks of hay bails to climb on. Nothing to bounce on. Pony rides are $10 each which seems a bit much. I like that there were big slides, there was a cute obstacle course and mini maze, and some other random things like tug of war and tetherball. For the age ranges of my kids (2-8), it felt meh compared to some other places I've been more in the Hampton roads area. We don't do the large corn mazes l due too the kids ages, they just get bored, so my suggestion would be to have a separate cost for corn maze. For reference, wood ridge farm brewery has a sand-filled playground, corn maze and a petting zoo for a bit cheaper... they do have a train, hay ride, and bounce house, but it all costs extra. I guess you can't have it all.

This was such a fun place to visit with kids! We visited in mid-October and it checked all the fall…read morefestival boxes. It's a vibe for sure and well worth the price of admission. They had it all, from apple cider (cold and hot!), apple cider donuts, ice cream, and fresh squeezed lemonade to a pumpkin patch and oodles of kids activities (slides, hill rolling, corn pits, apple sling shot, corn cannons, an epic corn maze, farm animals, pony rides and more). Need a pumpkin? Pick one in their patch! If you're looking for an idyllic fall festival, look no further but be warned that your kids won't want to leave! It is also dog friendly and we never had a long wait for a bathroom or any of the activities. At night they have movies and fire pits with s'mores kits.
