As an 11 year veteran (7 as a camper, 4 on staff) I can't offer you an unbiased review. That said, Tawonga is one of the best places on earth. Located just 20 minutes outside the west gate of Yosemite, this overnight summer camp is a truly special place. They provide a structured nurturing environment where children can gain self-esteem, live and play in a community that they've helped create, and learn respect and love for nature and the environment around them. From backpacking Yosemite to climbing the perch in the ropes course, swimming in the river below middle-falls, or just laying out on Stone Couch learning about the stars, I have so many fond memories of this place, a Yelp review could never sufficiently encapsulate my love for Tawonga. I can honestly tell you that I would not be the person I am today without my many wonderful experiences at Tawonga. I learned both who I am as a Jew, as well as who I am as a young man. Just like Sara O., I look forward to sending my kids there when the time comes.

His picture showed up when I tried to sign in with the card. The facility here is also not good compared to Fitness SF. Adult membership is $91 and Senior is $81 so not much of a discount even though his is paid for by Kaiser. They have free resistance band workout every other Wednesday at the Union Square plaza at 8am. It's a free class and the instructor is nice.

The theme is always about exploring yourself and there is an opportunity to do this through performance. However, no one has to perform. None of my kids are musically inclined but (three of my four kids) joined "rock band" and played the guitar, drums and keyboard for the first time. The fourth had a blast with all the other activities. There are kids from all walks of life, with every hair color (and piercings) but that's ok. Everyone is welcome and my kids (although very conservative) loved this idea and being friends with and accepted by kids of all different backgrounds. All four of my kids are so excited to go back each year. This summer will be three summers in a row. The counselors are exceptional. I have a very challenging bunch of kids and they really understood how to bring out the best in my kids. In fact, my oldest loves this place so much that she plans to become an counselors at Ucamps. Send you kids...they will LOVE it too!

It's not very large, but does give the kids a few decent options on what to do. I do think charging kids below the age of 2 seems a bit strange, but it is what it is. The first floor is honestly crafts you could easily create at home and feels more like a daycare style set up. The magic happens on the second floor where kids can create their own music beats, stop-motion movies. That being said this place can get pretty expensive as it was $20 per person so a family of 4 would have to pay $80. I say try it once, as kids will enjoy it, but I probably wont be back. The area is nice as well as there is a ice rink nearby and a fun playground to play and plenty of places to grab a bite. It was clean and felt safe!

Here we are, wrapping up our fourth consecutive summer at SACK. There is still that same wonderful…read morefeeling of BELONGING that we experienced when we joined the camp in 2009. The people of SACK - as well as of the Chinese Congregational Church (CCC) that runs the camp - continue to radiate a warmth and joy that is infectious. At Saturday night's third-annual fundraiser dinner, I had the opportunity to hear about the origins of the camp directly from one of its founders, Dick Hom. Forty-three years ago, Dick was a college student attending service at the CCC when he and a couple of his friends noticed that every summer there would be a large group of children playing parent-less across the street in Portsmouth Square (at the time one of the few parks in Chinatown). Upon asking around, Dick and his friends learned that the parents of these children had no place to put their kids while school was out of session. In all cases the families were extremely low-income, and in many cases there was only one parent in the home. So, while these parents were at work, they had little choice but to leave their children at the park to essentially be babysat by the community and each other. This was the inspiration for Dick and his partners to start a summer program at the church. The camp had a small and humble beginning but, as word spread, demand grew and the program progressed from half-day for a few weeks to the all-day, 8-week program we have today. That SACK has kept its enrollment fees so incredibly low over all these years is 100% attributed to the hard work by and dedication from everyone involved. Even after over four decades, they have never lost sight of their original mission. A huge KUDOS to all the counselors, directors, and church members who pour their time and their hearts into SACK...my daughter and I hope to be part of your community for many years to come.

Your child will love it here, it's guaranteed. They also get fed so you don't need to worry about lunch. Anyway, goodbye, farewell, I hope you have a good day. Don't forget to visit us. :)
