    The OG s'mores $7 Jan 2024
    Carolyn L.

I don't drink beer. My friends do and they love the selection here. They said the drinks are really good. I tried some from their flights (4 for $11) and it's a hard pass from me. Even the birthday cake which my friend said really tasted like it didn't taste like birthday cake to me. The cider I tried was not too bad though I'm still not a fan. They do have wine and juices and iced tea here. But what I do like about this place is the whole concept and vibe. It's such a welcoming place and really set up like a campground, complete with a campfire pit. Dogs and children are welcomed here. They have a kitchen and serve proper food, not just appy and bar bites. I had the OG s'mores and it was a nice treat. There are different sections. The cabin lodge like area inside has cozy corners and fire place, canoes hanging overhead. The sheltered outdoor area has long tables and benches for communal sharing. Then there is the patio which is not in used during the cold months. Servers are great and they remember your names. We came in twice that night and the server remembered my friend's name and said we brought more friends over. That was quite impressive as most servers don't remember details like that. I don't mind coming here again as I can always get food even if I don't drink beer. Plus there are plenty of dogs to play with (provided owners are cool with that). There is live music on Thursday and Sunday.

Looks like they've massively expanded since the last time I was here. What used to be an outdoor picnic area is now a fully enclosed (chilly but heated) patio, and the outside grass area is now a fenced in outdoor patio. The interior is mostly unchanged I think. There seems to be a large private area by the washrooms now, but that could've been there before. One thing that has changed (not sure if it's a licensing issue) is that they no longer allow ordering at the counter. Ordering has to be done by the staff. Not sure if this only applies to the enclosed patio where we were sitting. I guess that's a way to extract tips out of people? No biggie, but worth mentioning. I brought some friends here and they were impressed by the beer selection. Special mention goes to their birthday cake beer. Seriously I have no idea how one makes a beer taste like a freaking cake. But it tastes like a cake. Managed to convert another one. Definitely worth checking out if one is in the area.

What a fantastic brewery. Very cool layout, you can even smell the hops as you sit down to enjoy a beer. Very kind and attentive servers... Overall just a fantastic experience and I can't wait to come back and work my way through the rest of the menu! And I like that they put a unique spin on each of their beers, without being trendy or mindless....

Good beer, great vibes, love seeing all the pups on the patio! Service is quick and friendly. Food is decent, nothing special but definitely makes you feel like you're camping!

Such a great brewery! Tasty beer and friendly service and the cutest camp/outdoors theme. Fireplace was on which was super cozy. Tasting room is spacious. Looks like they had food but we didn't eat. I can't wait to come back here!

Love this brewery! The ambience is great, lovely outdoor seating area. Inside has a few different areas that are cozy (couches and fireplace). They serve food as well. We had the campfire nachos and tried a smokie. The food is yum! The beer is delicious, some unique flavors. The Gose was my favourite. This is a great place to meet up with friends! Will be back for sure.

**COVID-19 RESTRICTED REVIEW** The hubs and I are in the area so we decided to hit up this brewery as well. Parking is plenty within the business complex. We were ushered to sit in one of the long picnic tables after we put down our name, contact info. The bar is full-serve at this time. What a cool looking concept! It is set up like a campground...with the luxury of beer and modern amenities, of course. Our server is super attentive and gave us a few beers to try before stapling down our flight. We tried 3 of their sours & an ale in the flight - The forager (peach & apricot), Copa Da Floresta (mango & pineapple), Sandbar (strawberry & lime); and the Fall Camp '20 (Smoked Amber Ale). The beers are sour with notes of the said flavours. The smoked amber ale does have a faint hint of smoke. Beers are alright, the atmosphere is better. We sat outside and unfortunately there's only heaters for a couple of the seating areas. We were too cold and cut our visit shorter than expected. Overall, cool concept. May come back when it's warmer.

    Awesome nachos!

But don't sleep on Squamish's limited-but-delicious food scene. A solid place to start is Backcountry Brewing, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it bar and restaurant on the back side of the towns main shopping plaza. Since debuting in 2017, Backcountry has been a British Columbia beer darling; now, Backcountry prides itself on an ambitious lineup of limited-release beers. From the outside, the converted warehouse blends in with the rest of the industrial block. But inside, Backcountry is lively and inviting. The accents sport a tan and teal color palette. The bar to the right is decked with retro bulbs and a letterboard menu. Sound-dampening panels and camo-shaded lamps hang down from the soaring exposed HVAC. Each table is decked with a laminated BC map and mid-century modern chairs. Eighties tunes echo around the halls. My partner and I visited Backcountry after a full day of hiking, ready to chow down; we ordered a sandwich, a pizza, and a few flights. The Soprano -- Italian Sando was piled high with capicola, mortadella, and prosciutto cotto on a fluffy, poppyseed-laden foccacia. Our side of Five Guys-style, wedge-cut fries was rich and salty, and we loved each one of Backcountry's house-made sauces more than the last. The Meat Your Maker pizza was a deliciously nostalgic riff on the classic meat-lovers pizza. The thin crust stood up against the hefty helping of toppings, and the poofy cornicione paired perfectly with the exciting sauces. On the brewery side, the flights proved to be a fun deal. Across the beers, I was most impressed by the sours. Our collective favorite was the "Plan B? We Need A Plan C, D, E, We Need More Alphabets" (a basil-forward pineapple sour), while the "I'll Take You To the Candy Shop" (a peach-centric sour) and the "Might As Well Go For A Soda" (a gummy cola-esque cherry sour) were strong competitors. Meanwhile, the non-sour beers I tried were relative duds, including the "Never Taken A Shortcut Before?" oatmeal stout and the Sneaky Peach Cider. The service was friendly but somewhat inattentive throughout the meal, and the bill came to about $60 (after tax and tip). More than anything else, Backcountry satisfied -- it achieved the ideal brewery balance of fun, elevated, and casual. After our stay in Whistler, I admittedly had low expectations for Squamish, but Backcountry Brewing was a beyond-pleasant surprise, and I surely would visit again.

There are maybe 40 spots. Staff are friendly and helpful. As of the time of writing, there are 9 in house brews and 2 collaborations. Buddy and I had a flight each. The part that really threw me off was that their hazy beers (Hazy pale ale and Brookswood shuffle) tasted really strange, in a bad way. My buddy noticed that with his pale beers too (he had their NE IPA and something else). I had to choke down both of mine. Meanwhile the other 2 beers in my flight (Tastes like another, and Black hole stout) were actually quite good, and can be recommended. Not sure if we received a bad batch or what, but I'm leery about trying the lighter beers again for the time being. I was almost tempted to ask for my money back, or at least have the 2 hazys swapped out. Something to keep in mind. With that said, I'm willing to give them a chance in the future, once they work out more of their production kinks.

The batch's of beer weren't that great but over the months they have been getting better and better. That's just part of starting something new. The caramel cream ale is their best so far. I found them all to be good with a couple of them, the Helles Lager and the Dark Czech Lager, that were exceptional (and I'm typically not a lager aficionado). They have a limited menu and I had the gobbler sandwich with a side of potato salad. Sandwich was fresh and quite good, but the standout was the pickles, which were amazing! I also ordered a side of pickle spears because they were that good. They said that someone locally makes the pickles. Service is good, staff was friendly.
