Camp Augusta - Summer Camps Near Me - Nevada City, California

Wow. Camp Augusta was way more than I expected. Almost to a fault. Let me explain: we came here for a family weekend camp and really didn't look to hard at what it was. I've been to camp. I've been to Tahoe national forest. I know what it was going to be and hoo boy was I wrong... in thre best possible way. So apparently most of the people there are seasonal regulars and it showed. I'll explain at the bottom. First if all the drive from the south bay. It was not the three hours my wife said, on a Friday afternoon it was almost six. Now that that is out of the way, the rest is all good. First came activity sign up, hope you don't suffer from anxiety or fear of missing out because there are SOOOOOOO many activities. Kid stuff, toddler stuff, adult stuff, stuff I didn't think camps could do. And you should read the emails with the descriptions or man up and ask, because some things are self explanatory (pottery, acrylics, archery, zip line) and some sound fun but in reality shouldn't be done by an overweight 50 year old who has no training, but you can still sign up. And then SOMEHOW they get you to do it and you have a great time! Next are accommodations. Sparse, but cool. Open air cabins in villages, secluded bungalows, pole tents, platform tents, and more (bring bug spray, they're all kinda just open). Different villages, running water means not only flushing toilets (really that should be the title and get 5 stars for that alone) but also HOT showers. While camping. Hot showers and camping, whoddathunkit? Next meals. Meals at camp. Cool. Nope: incredible. Apparently it is a rotating menu but for a weekend or week it means without being a host you have a new option at every meal. Vegans, gluten free, dairy free, whatever, they got you covered. You eat everything, they got you too. Ls favourite was pancakes with berries and whipped cream. And they don't go light. I really dig the teriyaki chicken. The activities were all great, but again there were just too many. You really feel like it is overboard until you get to know everyone else there. It is a place that kids and parents look forward to year after year. The wide selection means that this will be your go to for camping for years to come and for good reason. There were kids that have been going since they were toddlers and now in the mid teens that can still go and have a good time. I had lunch (but no clinics unfortunately) with a young lady who was on year 9. That seemed unlikely bit that wasd including the time she was a camper. How cool is that? L was suffering from preteen cool and didn't want to go to camp, but after the first datu he was pestering me to get him in a couple sessions this summer. They are all full but there is a waitlist, so we're all in on getting him up there somehow. Tl;dr: awesome camp, read my review, it isn't that long read more

This amazing place rents itself exclusively during its off season. We just had our wedding there and it was the best weekend of our lives! The property is incredible, the staff friendly & helpful and the programming(rock wall climbing, archery, zip lines, etc) were amazing! I highly recommend for family reunions, weddings, corporate or non-profit retreats. read more

Fantastic staff and wonderful mission. A special place for any child to experience a summer away from home.

I created a Yelp account just to write this review - we just had our wedding at Camp Augusta and I cannot recommend it and its staff highly enough. I'll assume you're choosing this venue because you like the outdoors and rustic camping - if you're looking for a really elegant venue, I'd say Camp Augusta's probably not for you. We hired staff to run the ropes course and zipline on the day before the wedding, and they were all fantastic. We also hired four staffers (Marty, Shaggy, Brian, and Ronnie) to help us on the day of our wedding, and they were so efficient they finished a lot of the tasks hours before we thought they were going to. But the kicker was when during the reception we found out that one of the kegs hadn't arrived - AND SHAGGY WENT OUT AND GOT US A KEG. I have no idea how he did it, but one minute we were worriedly telling him that we needed a keg, and shortly thereafter, one appeared. Needless to say, he probably single-handedly saved our wedding from fizzling out early. All the staff were professional, upbeat, and helpful, and we had the best day of our lives. Finally, the venue is SO FUN. All our friends had a blast the entire weekend swimming, playing games, making campfires, and playing music. If you're an outdoorsy couple, I would definitely schedule a visit and check out Camp Augusta - we're SO glad we choose this place! read more

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have stumbled across this small camp tucked into the scenic woods of Nevada City, CA. After over 7 years of involvement with Camp Augusta, I can safely say that I haven't yet found another organization that rivals the incredible level of intention that Augusta puts into creating a truly magical space for self-exploration and genuine community support for campers and counselors alike. If you are looking for a run-of-the-mill camp experience, this is not the place for you. Augusta will challenge you to imagine possibilities that are way beyond any typical place of work. You'll find yourself spending days teaching an incredible array of activities (from high ropes to archery to circus and acrobatic arts to fire spinning to blacksmithing to ninja training and SO much more), spending truly quality time with the campers, and creating alternate worlds that do not rely on media or digital technology to spring to life. Every single staff member at Camp Augusta has abundant opportunity to play, learn, grow, discover, and connect with peers from around the world. Indeed some of my closest friends have come from the ranks of Augustan counselors, both present and past. You will work incredibly hard here, be invited to question your perceived limits, and develop your passions as you see fit for yourself. read more

Camp Augusta was the second camp that I worked at, and I worked there full time from 2006-2013. What initially drew me in was the unique philosophy towards managing behavior with children. What I wasn't expecting was how much I would learn about myself during my time there - anyone who crosses paths with Augusta, whether they are a camper, parent, staff member, renter or school group experiences a community that intentionally reaches out and tries to make a difference in the world, one unique person at a time. There are campers I knew from 2006 who have now graduated college, and cite Camp Augusta as one of the most life-changing experiences they ever had. Camp Augusta empowers, challenges, cares and takes healthy risks. They offer activities ranging from high ropes, to traditional weaponry, to the aerial arts, and good pure fun on the lake. Children are nurtured here, and some learn activities that change the path of their life - recently one of our campers was accepted to Montreal Circus School. This is not your average summer camp.... read more

The two summers that I spent as a staff member at Camp Augusta (2013-2014) were full of meaning, surprise, wonder and growth. I found a community of compassionate and service-oriented folks with a deep hunger to celebrate life with intention, and shared an awareness of how personal experiences interconnect with the lives of others - it is a deep community, for sure. I learned how to make my own lip balm, how to spin a flaming hula hoop and how to lend comfort to a homesick kid. I impacted the lives of my co-workers and hundreds of children by developing camp activities, learning to communicate and counsel with greater empathy and sensitivity, and playing costumed characters as varied as a garden gnome, a sorcerer, and a walking-talking cardboard box. At Camp Augusta, I was encouraged to see challenges as an opportunity for growth, and to create magical experiences through a sense of wonder, an attention to the needs of others, and of course - well-developed time management skills. Camp Augusta was, and continues to be, a touchstone in my life. read more
