Very pleasant tea rooms at the west end of Linlithgow high street. Helpful staff, and a good choice on the menu.

After a long day walking around in and outside of Linlithgow castle I needed a nice hot chocolate…read moreand shelter from the cold wind. Coffee Neuk to the left was the first coffee shop I saw and which stood out from all the other coffee shops around the market place. My first thought was that the prices are high and the food about average, because of the closeness to such a famous attraction. My expectations were "luckily" not fulfilled :-) When I entered, there was nobody at the counter and a couple was sitting near the window in the adjoining tea room. The place seemed deserted, but "oh mei" was I wrong, Within minutes the tea room filled up with people enjoying an afternoon chat with friends or tourists just getting in from the castle visit, like me. I had to order at the counter and was informed that the scones were sold old. Next choice was a piece of carrot cake and a mug of Hot Chocolate, which by the way was a Cadbury Hot Chocolate (just to point it out, as they appear to be very proud of the Cadbury logo). I took seat at a small table (1-2 people max, but really cute) and attempted my first bite of the carrot cake. What can I say? It was not dry, no, it was soft and juicy with a layer of cream cheese topping. The menu choices are limited, but what you get has substance. The staff is very nice, the prices very accommodating ( a lasagna for abt £4 ?!?) and the place very clean. I went to the toilet and when coming back my table was cleaned and no trace of me remained. Ah well, and so I continued forth on my journey back home.........

Yet another good coffee shop in the surprisingly small town of Linlithgow. Coffee Neuk is a more…read moretraditional coffee shop. It's a lot cheaper than some of the other cafes such Ebulum (previously reviewed). But this is really where its charm lies. The staff here are really friendly, though for a Linlithgow cafe that doesn't seem unusual. It is a tad small, but they make the most of the space. Unfortunately at lunch though this place gets pretty popular. Expect the usual sorts of hot drinks, as well as some snacks ideal for lunch. I had the soup of the day which cost me £2.40. That's pretty good, or at least average, for Edinburgh prices. But the portions were bigger than normal and it was served with decent bread. I like to think we Scots are proud of our soup but you'd be surprised how many times I'm disappointed by the poor quality soup served around Edinburgh! Coffee Neuk didn't disappoint though.

Hubby was away to see a job in Fife so me and the wee one decided to go along for a jaunt. It's a quaint little cafe and deli with brilliant views of the Forth Road and Rail Bridge our little girl loved watching the trains going by overhead. The food was delicious all fresh, homemade produce! Both me and my hubby opted for the Broccoli and Stilton Soup for starters which was delicious, hot and just what we needed on a cold day. We both didn't want the bowl to end it was delicious! Hubby had the special which was an Aberdeen Angus burger with fries and sides this was juicy and delicious! I opted for a deli style toasty with bacon, Brie and tomato salsa this again was delicious. My little one was also well catered for with a kids platter which was only £2.50!! This was a great little idea with a plate of little bits and bobs for her to pick at including raisins, grapes, little crudités, some lovely deli sliced ham, a dairylea dunker and a peppa pig yoghurt, she absolutely loved this and kept her interested in her food. After we demolished all this we then ordered a carafe of coffee and a large slice of the mocca chocca cake this was delightful. A half between a coffee and chocolate cake very delicate and light and the filling was delicious. The coffee was also REAL coffee, real grinded beans, nice hot & strong with a kick. All of this plus drinks and our bill was £35!!, total bargain and not a scrap was left! This little place was soooo good that we are planning on a drive back to Fife just to come back here again, salivating thinking if that soup!! Yummy! They have a website and also on Facebook as Rankins Cafe And Deli.

I had the Moroccan chicken with apricots wrap and couscous, delicious. The waffles with crispy bacon and maple syrup scrummy. The scone with cream and strawberry jam was light and fluffy. All the dishes were made fresh to order and were presented nicely. The mocha coffee was good as was the hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows. North Queensferry is an interesting place to visit with so much history attached to it, there is more than just the bridge here to enjoy. Xoxo
