I would like to personally thank the owners and their team for the great service they have provided us over the years (since 2011). My time with the other companies wasn't necessarily a negative experience, nor was it anything overly positive. It was just insurance. When Alan Jones us, "...upon the renewal time of your policy, we won't just send a letter in the mail, telling you what we've already done, we'll actually call you prior to your renewal", I was very impressed. However, when you told us, "We don't insure things, we insure people!"...well that was all we really needed to hear to move our business to them, and are we ever glad we did. Not only did you save us money on our policy but you provided us with much better coverage than we previously had before. We've had a few vehicle changes and a couple claims since moving to Foothills Insurance - each time was handled quickly, efficiently and pretty painless. After a nightmare dealing with TD for an insurance claim on my home I decided this bank got enough…read moreof my money for the many years I have used them and wanted to go old school and find home and auto insurance through a traditional channel. We actually got referred to this broker by a friend of my husbands who works at the Fish Creek Nissan dealership who uses this broker for their car sales. I love it when I get someone on the phone right away, like a human without the robo menu is a bonus for me, so they started off right. The receptionist was super nice, listened to my concerns and gave me some feedback and was a total professional, she transferred me to a broker in the office and he was incredibly knowledgeable and extremely pleasant to deal with and obviously knew the industry very well. He took some info and started an application for me and said he would get back to me by the end of the day and if he got busy he would have his assistant get back to me. Bonus points, a pretty solid human receptionist and assistant who would actually talk to me by the end of the day...ok, ok, I see you. By the end of the day I not only got a call back, the insurance was quoted LESS than what I was paying with TD and decided to add my car to get a better rate. I didn't even have to go in to the office, everything was done though phone and email and a pink card was emailed to me shortly afterwards. If I had to pay more, I would still use this office; its small but in a good way and I found out they also have an office in Edmonton. They remember you when you call, and send you emails keeping you informed-always a good sign and tells me they run a tight ship. I will never go through a bank again, it took over 6 months to settle a minor claim, but its my own fault for not shopping around, banks are in the business of making money not selling insurance so lesson learned. Kudos on being the small guys who still understand what customer service is, I will be referring friends and family here.

I very briefly descriped my financial difficulties to the woman who answered, ending with a slightly desperate "I don't see a way out of my debt." She was silent. Then crisply replied, noticeably annoyed, "You'll have to book an appt. with a counselor". Hmm....not friendly or approachable. Was embarrassed already, just calling. Now felt doubly so. Said I'd think about it. I've thought about it. Will look elsewhere for credit counseling.

I'm still at a point where I am well able to pay off my debt if I apply myself to it, but my issue is that I tend to think 'I've been doing so well paying my cards off, I can make one small purchase...' and before I know it, I'm back where I started. So I went to Money Mentors with the goal of discussing my situation, discussing ways that I could be more accountable and ways to avoid using my credit cards. My complaint with the service is that it is purely financial focused. When I asked for advice of ways not to use my credit cards, it basically boiled down to 'Don't use them.' I asked if there was a way I could be set up with an accountability buddy (e.g: someone to do a monthly check in with, so that I would be accountable in my spending) my counsellor suggested I look for an app that had that. While I am sure there are many people who come to Money Mentors who just genuinely don't know anything about finances and can be put on the straight and narrow with some sound financial advice, I think that a lot of people wind up in debt because of the psychological and emotional components that come with spending, keeping up with the Jones, etc. I would like to see Money Mentors focus on those areas as well, as I think that overspending is often a symptom of underlying issues. So, Money Mentors is great if you genuinely know nothing about money, but if you're someone who knows about good financial management but for whatever reason can't make yourself financially responsible, I wouldn't recommend them unless you're seeking to enter the Orderly Payment of Debts plan.
