This is an update on an old review I wrote a few years ago. Aaron still has not disappointed me. Since I wrote my last review of Camera Repair Service I have bought a Sony A7R Mark 2, a 21mm Voigtlander with a Contax rangefinder mount repaired, and a second 21mm Voigtlander Sony FE mount repaired. The owner knows absolutely everything there is to know about every sort of camera ever created. Whether a Leica or old Nokia, he's truly an expert. Boy, do I wish I read through these reviews before I took my camera here. During a wedding, I accidentally dropped my camera. The battery door broke, but aside from that, the camera was working fine. I called Camera Repair Service to ask if they could fix it. In the middle of me explaining what was wrong, Aaron cut me off and said, "just bring it in, we will fix it." I asked my partner to drop off the camera since he works close to Market Square. When he took it in, my partner showed him the piece that needed to be fixed, and Aaron said he would call me with an estimate. I got a call later that day saying it would be $40. I gave him my card information and he told me he would call me hopefully by Friday, Monday at the latest. I didn't receive a call, so on Tuesday I called to check in. I asked if the camera was ready for pick-up and Aaron get irritated and said no, I had to pay first. I said that I did pay, and he went on to explain that the $40 was a diagnostic fee, not payment to fix it. Then he told me to be patient and hung up on me. He was incredibly rude. There was no need for a "diagnostic" check because I showed him exactly what was broken. It was just the battery door -- no further inspection was necessary and I wasn't requesting any other work to be done on it. After this call with Aaron, I went and checked the reviews and saw so many people having the same experiences. My partner immediately went to pick up the camera stating we no longer wished for him to service it. When my partner inquired why we paid $40 for a diagnostic fee when we specially showed him the ONE part that was broken, he responded, "because you can't tell a technician how to do his job." He put the camera on the counter and walked away. I certainly will not be returning and I will advise all my other local photographer friends to steer clear, as well. I brought a lens here for diagnosis and repair. The man at the counter said it was a $20 fee and the lens would be diagnosed by Monday, and repaired the same day if I decided to proceed. On Monday I received a call that the lens could be repaired for $240, and would be done by the next Friday. I explained that this wouldn't work with my schedule and the shop said that it may be able to be finished by Wednesday, pending availability of a part. Tuesday I received a call stating that the part needed to be ordered, and that it wouldn't be ready by when I needed the lens. The woman who called said I could come get the lens and that I would be refunded the $240 that I had prepaid... So in my mind I was only out the $20 diagnostic fee. Unfortunately, that was not the case. After returning to pick up the lens, I noticed that the lens would not fully collapse -- a problem that the lens didn't have when I dropped it off. I mentioned this to the owner and he immediately became defensive, stating that the lens was in the same condition as when I brought it in. I explained that this was not the case since the lens was no longer capable of fully collapsing and was entirely unusable. He said it was still broken and needed repair, and kept repeating that it was in the original condition. In short, I am now out $20 my lens is entirely unusable. If I lived in Pittsburgh I would likely file a small claims suit against Camera Repair Service due to the damage they caused to my lens. read more

I have used Camera Repair Services in the 2019 with fixing some older super 8 cameras and in those times times they were pretty prompt on response times, letting me know the situation of my cameras and the costs. I emailed them in April of 2020 to make sure they were able to service a camera due to COVID-19 and they said they could so I mailed the camera. Once they received the camera it took them 5 business days to respond and when they did they said that they now have a $20 diagnostic fee to have their tech look at the camera which I was totally fine with. I paid the $20 fee and 7 days later they told me that they no longer service the parts to make the repair and asked for another $20 for shipping back to me. I understood and sent another $20 for shipping plus my return address in Florida (same return address that was on the package when I initially shipped it to them). After 8 days of silence I followed up asking if my camera had been shipped which they replied "Yes, we did." and that was all. I asked if they could provide tracking information and they sent over a USPS tracking number that showed that it was shipped to Los Angeles, CA. I contacted them again because the address they mailed the camera to an older address they had on file and not the address I provided them via email when sending the payment. I've called them and left a voicemail, I've emailed repeatedly and they are yet to respond to anything. If you need some camera gear fixed, I would highly recommend that you SKIP this company and find someone that actually reads email and cares about their customers. read more

I just wanted them to look at the problem while I was there and if they had the part I could leave for days (I was leaving on tour and could not return that day). He did not look busy but he refused to look at it. By then he could have at least looked at it. I felt he was unreasonable and very rude. Woke up one morning, went to take a photo of my dog with my trusty DSLR, and suddenly, the camera that had worked the night before, would not take a picture. This was a Friday. We were leaving for vacation the following Wednesday to tour National Parks. I panicked, we took the camera in to this shop and were told no problem, it would be ready by Monday afternoon, Tuesday at the latest. Fine. That sounded great. Relieved, I went home and waited for the call. Monday, no call came. Okay, they said maybe Tuesday anyway, but we called to check on it. Took a little longer than expected, they said, but definitely done by Tuesday. Gave us a repair price of a few hundred dollars, which seemed reasonable for a DSLR repair. All sounded fine by us. A bit down to the wire, but fine. Tuesday. Waited. Waited.... waited.... no updates. Called around 2pm, and they said, 'oh, it's not going to be ready after all. But! Come on down and we'll give you a comparable replacement for your trip.' Fine, things happen. Upset that they didn't call us to tell us this (if we hadn't called ourselves, we would never have known before they closed at 5pm), but they're making it right by loaning us a camera. This was still fine. Went down to pick up the replacement camera. The guy asked when we're returning on our trip. I tell him in 6 days. He said, 'oh, it'll definitely be fixed by then!' Got the replacement camera home and started playing around with it. Find out that it was in NO WAY comparable to the camera we have. It was several steps down, didn't even have a digital display, had nowhere near the amount of manual adjustments and options of our camera. Literally the only thing comparable to our camera was that it was made by the same company, had the right fit for our lens series, and took the same size memory card as ours. LIVID. I felt very much like we were taken advantage of because we aren't professional photographers. Thankfully, we were able to find a very last-minute camera rental opportunity north of the city, and we got a camera that was one step up from ours for only a couple hundred bucks rental for the week. We didn't even bring the camera shop's 'replacement' with us on the trip. Over the next week, I expected to receive a phone call from the shop saying we could pick up our camera. But no call. No updates at all. Finally, the day we arrived home from our trip, we called to follow up. No answers for several more day... Finally got in touch with them by the end of the week and were told the camera unexpectedly needed a part that they had to order in - and it was going to cost another $300!! Total, the repair would have cost us around $700, while the price to purchase a totally refurbished body of this same model would only be $900. We declined to have this repair completed and picked up our still-broken camera the next day, about 2 and a half weeks after we dropped it off for 'repair in a few days.' I understand that things happen. Unexpected things happen - you have to do more work than you originally planned, order a part, etc. These things are understandable. What is NOT understandable is the lack of communication we experienced. We were never contacted with updates unless we called the shop ourselves. If things go wrong and you keep me abreast of the situation, I will still be able to support you. If you can't be bothered to tell me what's happening unless I chase you down... I consider that to be unacceptable. And if you can't loan me a truly comparable replacement camera, SAY THAT. Tell me up front, 'we have a camera we can loan you that's a few grades down, would you like that?' Don't try to lie to me and think that I won't catch on because I'm not a professional photographer. Honesty and communication are key in this kind of situation. I felt disrespected as a customer through the whole process, and taken advantage of because I'm a patient person and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt at so many points throughout the ordeal. I want to support small local businesses, and we really don't have many camera repair shops in the 'Burgh, but I was so disappointed with our experience here. read more

I came in to have my cameras checked, and Aaron was rude from the moment I walked in to the moment that I walked out. I was going to pay the $40 charge for each of my camera to be checked by the technician, but Aaron's attitude was so off-putting that I would never want to give this man my money. He's the type of person that makes me wonder how they got into a customer service-based industry, because clearly this was not his first negative interaction with a potential customer. tl;dr- There are other places in the city that will provide great service and even better customer service. Do not recommend this place at all. Maybe the worst customer service I've ever dealt with. Zero communication, zero help at all. I asked serval times for diagnostic and they would reply with a single word. Asked multiple times for a tracking, they don't seem to know how to use email. I'm really not sure how this shop keeps any customer base at all. I went in with a broken lens mount and had no idea how expensive it would be to repair and wanted to know if it would be worth it before committing to any type of expensive repair since it was a kit lens that came with my camera - they demanded $40 before they would even look at the camera (although the problem was quite obvious, a small piece of plastic on the outside that had been snapped off). They also wanted to take the whole camera (even though only the lens was broken, and it has a standard mount), and refused to even give an idea of whether or not they would be able to fix it. All the while, treating me like I was an idiot and an inconvenience to them. I've never felt so disrespected at a place of business in my life. Just because I'm not a professional photographer doesn't mean I don't know my own equipment. So Ritz Camera did the job instead. UPDATE: As one reviewer mentioned, a diagnostic fee is not an unreasonable thing to charge, I just took issue with the fact that I had a common lens with an obvious problem and they wanted me to pay $40 before they would give me a yes or no as to whether they would fix it. I would happily pay a $40 diagnostic fee or deposit on the repair if they had been willing to give me a little information on what they thought might be wrong and what kind of repair it might need. It ended up being a really simple repair and I wish I could have given the business to someone local rather than resorting to a big chain like Ritz. read more

Beyond disappointed with this place! A little background I am a film photographer and sell cameras as a source of secondary income. So I know a good bit about cameras. I went there to trade some of my collection for a Hassleblad, I wasn't expecting a fair trade as Hassleblad are very high quality and the price reflects that. I brought some cash for this reason. I arrived and they took my cameras into the back. Then 20 mins later he comes back out and says he will give me 175 for everything and said most of it was broke but i used it days before. I WAS FURIOUS! I wasn't expecting to have a good mine but alot more than 100 dollars. I tried to negotiate with him and he just got rude and said come back another day. I went to BERNIES PHOTO CENTER the same day and they offered me a little over 400 dollars!!! Bot to mention a lady came in to take her camera back because the cost of repair was to high. My husband the railfan! Seriously, the man must take hundreds of train photos each year. I don't know how many volumes of these he has. Each photo is catagorized too, so if I ask him which diesel locomotive he shot on November 3, 1992 he could find it. And he steadfastly refuses to give up his 35mm camera. So the couple of times his camera has gone on the fritz, he's brought it here for service. Of course, since I work Downtown, I have to pick it up! They're able to service 35mm here and they still sell some 35mm equipment. I brought a camera in that needed repairs. I won't go into details, but it's quite rare. Aaron immediately recognize it and chatted with me about it. Paid the $20 deposit to have it looked at. $575 was the quote! !!!!!!!!! When I picked it up after declining the repair, he told me that that was a low estimate (lolololol) and if I reconsidered, I should do it soon because that might go up, and barely looked at me the whole time. Camera Repair Services has been my 'go to' store for everything I need to enhance my photography. From buying new lenses to full on repair; this place is great. A wonderful, locally owned and operated store with steep ties in the community. Every time I've gone in, everyone has taken the time to help ensure I'm good to go and my answers resolved. Recently, I had to drop off my Nikon D300S to get the CF Card Slot repaired after bending a few of pins. Not only did they fix the pins with a brand new part but they also took the time to clean the camera sensor. The repair was done within the time they said including cleaning all my lenses. I am a professional photographer. I dropped my camera and then screwed it up trying to fix it. I took it in and Camera Repair Service replaced the back and mother board. The camera also had an autofocus issue after I dropped it. The camera worked, but the intermittent autofocus issue remains. I took it back and they said they were unable to replicate the autofocus issue. It happens to me every time I try to use the camera, but intermittently. So my rating is for 3 reasons: 1) they were unable to find an easily recognizable focusing problem, 2) it looks like they replaced the mother board with one from a slightly different model, and 3) they really didn't try very hard once I said I still had a problem. They were unresponsive - saying things like "I have no way of finding the part number of the mother board we used to replace yours" (they must have ordered it from someone...) I learned my lesson and will ALWAYS use a repair service certified by my camera manufacturer. read more

Overall my experience at Camera Repair Service was great!! I had an initial deposit for the in-house tech to diagnose my DSLR. I got a call with a service estimate around 24 hours later. I proceeded with the repairs, the service fee was deducted from the total costs. I was able to pick up my DSLR by the end of the week, and it was working just like new!! Furthermore, my camera came with a 90 Day Warranty. I will definitely be back, but I hope not too soon... read more

Unhelpful. Rude. Arrogant. Just needed a spray of compressed air, just a quick look see to see if everything was ok. Didn't even want to look. Actually BACKED away from me and only wanted to charge $40 for a camera inspection service that I didn't even need or want! Just wanted their opinion on my lens behavior/situation, just an expert's eye to see if it needed to have a professional inspection or not. With a totally empty store and nothing else that he was involved in other than sitting looking bored- he offered ZERO customer service, or care. After seven years the owner of this establishment apparently thinks it is time to try to get me to come back with even more rudeness? Sorry, I don't think so. Your reply is evidence that you are still rude and unhelpful, and that nothing about your business has changed. "And no one works for free." says the owner. I'm surprised he didn't ask me for my credit card before even saying hello. (Not that he said hello.) The translation of this for Camera Repair Service is that any level of customer service or interaction at all regarding a repair is $40. If you want even the most basic of questions answered about your repair, they want $40 first. My questions were: "Around how long do you think this repair would take?" "Will this repair be done in house?" I was stonewalled by a continual rude request for $40. I had a professional job to shoot and knowing around how long a repair of this type would take is essential information. Again, this was not a tricky diagnostic job, it was a bent flash housing clearly visible. (Not that the guy behind the counter even looked at it.) At my old beloved camera repair shop in Seattle, at a minimum he would have taken a quick look at the camera, given me a ball park estimate, and an estimated repair time. In this case, I'm guessing he probably would have gone in the back for 5sec bent the flash housing back for free and sent me on my way. Because that is how you treat customers you want repeat business from: you are helpful and pleasant and don't immediately try to separate them from their money. (I had that shop rebuild two Rolleiflex TLRs and Mamiya, and do repairs on numerous Canons to the tune of thousands of dollars over the years.) I fixed the bent housing myself by the way. And have taken all other repairs since either to Canon directly or to a reputable repair shop in NYC. I will never go back to Camera Repair Services. Too bad, because Pittsburgh could use this service in town. read more

I have worked with this company for years. I have given them a lot of business. I took my projector here to get serviced. They called me a day later and told me, the projector was beyond repair. They supplied us with a new projector that's even better then our original for about $220. Later found the exact same projector they sold me online for a fraction of the cost. Once I got the "New" projector to my store, it would not even run my film. I tried to get the projector to run for over an hour, and it would not work. The following week I took the projector back to this company. The owner tried for over 10 minutes to get the projector to work, he was unable to get it to run. He took the projector into the back to work on it privately, then 10 minutes later he comes back and just hands me an entirely different projector. I assume he was unable to get the projector he had just sold me to function properly. Once I got back to my store with the "newer" projector, I ran film through for about 4 or 5 hours, when the bulb burnt out. I called this company for assistance on replacing the bulb, and they wanted to charge me $50.00. I explained I had just bought this projector and the bulb shouldn't be done already. He then explained that the person who sold me the projector didn't bother to include a new bulb. After all these issues occurred , I decided to try my luck on Ebay to locate a better projector. I found a better projector for half the price. I then called this company, and asked if I could have a refund, and return this defective projector. This company refused to give me a refund, even though I only had the projector for about 15-20 days. They would not help any further after that. I will never go back to this company again, and I strongly suggest you not waste your time. They're terrible unprofessional and offer no customer support to loyal and return customers or any customers for that matter! read more

Not kind. Rude. Too expensive. As already many pepole described, this shop is totally terrible customer service. The man working did not want to discuss anything with me and just tell me to pay $20 and seemed to want me out of his shop as soon as possible. I had to pay $20. 3 days after, the man called me $350 was need to fix. The cost was too expenseive. I stopped to ask them to fix as I can buy a brand-new almost the same price!! The deposit never return to me. The otehr day, I asked manufacturer to fix it, the cost was only $40!! (just clean up the lens). read more

My wife and I left the country for 4 months and right before we did we decided it would be a good idea to find a good camera. We could have gone to Best Buy or Target but instead we came here. The girl at the desk was such a sweetheart and when we was unsure of how to answer a few of my wife's questions the gentleman working there stepped in. We walked out with a BRAND NEW camera. Almost all of his items are refurbished but he had just received this beautiful Canon that was still in the box but was $300 CHEAPER than retail price, we couldn't say no. During our trip our 5 year old kept begging and begging to use the camera, we said no because we did not want to risk her dropping it but we have decided that we will be getting our little girl a camera for her next birthday and we will come here for it! Terrible customer service, the man working did not want to discuss anything with me and just seemed to want me out of his shop as soon as possible. I believed that I had dust on the sensor of my camera so I brought it here due to it being close to my school. They charged me an outrageous price just for me to bring it back the same day because of the dust still being present. I then had to leave it over the weekend just for them to see if they could fix it. They supposedly cleaned it again, but it looked exactly the same and I ended up having to take it to another shop. read more

We stopped in to say hello to drop off my Nikon for a Sensor Cleaning. Since it was early enough in the day, I was told that the technician could complete the work in a hour or so. After lunch, we came back to Camera Repair and I picked up my Nikon DSLR looking Brand New. David the Manager, showed me a better lens for my Nikon and at a stellar price. A lot of mixed reviews about this place, but decided to give it a shot anyways. Over the last few months, I have noticed a problem with the shutter release on my D90. Most of the time the shutter release works ok. But occasionally both half-press and full-press fail to work. This is not a problem with focus lock, flash recharging, or having the camera in the wrong mode. Trust me. I took it to Camera Repair Service and had it fixed in a week. Good service -- they knew exactly how to solve the issue (new part) and it didn't cost an arm and a leg! read more

My Nikon D7100 gave me the dreaded Err message Sunday afternoon. Walked in to this shop Monday morning and after diagnosing the problem and calling with an estimate I walked out of the store by 2:30pm with a functioning camera again. Terrible experience getting a battery replaced in my Raymond Weil watch. While the service was quick, condensation started immediately forming inside the watch. Went back the next day and the technician wasn't there, went back today and they were very unapologetic and wouldn't do anything about it. I asked for a refund on the service, since now I have to take the watch in to a jewelry store for repair which will surely be expensive. They refused and said the issue had nothing to do with their battery replacement (which had just happened prior to this condensation issue). Clearly, asking a camera technician to replace a watch battery wasn't smart. But I was most disappointed with their couldn't-care-less bad attitude when I stopped back in. I brought in two cameras and lens for repair and found them pleasant, friendly and helpful. My cameras turned out great after the repairs, and have since purchased items from the store. I had a very good experience in this store. my Nikon D-80 took a small tumble and needed repair. The staff member was courteous, knowledgeable and professional. My camera ultimately needed a sensor replaced which needed to be ordered and when the part did not arrive when they expected, the store leant me another lens so that I could take pictures at my child's event. When it was repaired, the staff member named Devin gave me a small tutorial on my camera. I would recommend this store for all your camera needs. read more

I took my Sony camera to Camera Repair Service for an estimate, and eventually had the repair done there also. They were professional, quick with phone calls, and helpful with advice. The cost of the repair was actually a bit less than the estimate I had gotten from Sony. I would use them again, and would recommend to others. read more

I had the worst experience of my life having my camera repaired at this place! I have read mixed reviews, but decided to give them a try. Long story short, they've wasted more than a month of my time, I am out of $150 of my money, and nothing has been fixed. read more

First of all I just want to say that the people who wrote all the negative reviews are probably the same people who constantly send their food back at a restaurant because it took longer then 10 minutes to prepare. Or the same people who rip their rotors apart after not listening to their mechanic to change their breaks because they think he is just trying to rip them off. Those people are who I like to respectfully call...idiots. So here's my no bs story... On Friday February 22nd 2013 I took my Tamron 60mm f/2 MACRO lens in for repair after dropping it during mounting. The body was undamaged but the autofocus wasn't working. Being a Tamron I wasn't sure if they could fix it but being that there really aren't any other alternatives since Ritz closed I figured I'd give them a shot. Upon arrival I spoke with Manager David and he said the repair was no problem and that I would just need to put $20 down which would go towards the final repair bill. He gave me a written contract to sign which outlined all their terms and conditions which were not in anyway unreasonable. I signed it, put a $20 on the table, got a copy of the contract and left my lens with them. I also told him that I would need have a written estimate up front before making any repairs and he assured me that this would be no problem. By Monday I received a call from him stating the charges ($120 total which included the $20 down) and that he would email me the invoice estimate and approval before proceeding. Within a few minutes I received the invoice in my inbox as promised, reviewed it, they seemed reasonable (considering a new lens would be over $500) and I told him to proceed. By Tuesday afternoon David called me to let me know that the lens was fixed and that I can pick it up anytime. I arrived the next day to pick it up and it was seriously like brand new! After testing it out the auto focus was actually even FASTER then before and I just couldn't believe it! But there was one small exception regarding the repair which I didn't discover until later that evening. The glass window which lets you see your f stop was not properly glued in and was sinking into the body. The contract I signed states a 90 day repair warranty and after speaking to David about the problem he told me to bring it back in and it would be covered under warranty. I finally got around to dropping it off on Tuesday March 12th and it was ready for me to pick it up today March 13th. I picked it up about an hour ago, window glued...no additional charges as promised. All in all I would just like to say as a customer who experienced both their repair service and warranty repair service that I am extremely satisfied. I will definitely be using them again and highly recommend their organization to anyone else in need of photography equipment repairs. Thanks again guys! Chris read more
