How much is good service worth to you? To me, it's worth A LOT. To me and my family, it's worth forgoing our network dentist and paying out of pocket. And before you say, "...well that must be nice to have expendable money...", I don't have expendable money. I'm a single parent and solely care for my two adult autistic children. We're going to have to give up a few nights out at the movies and maybe we won't have a summer vacation this year, but I know we are in good hands (the best hands), I know the work done to our teeth is as top notch as it could possibly be and I know I won't have expensive complications that I'll have to deal with later down the road. That's why I only go to The Camarillo Dental Practice. I had a toothache that wouldn't let up and they got me in and fixed me up the same day. Your teeth are forever and there are a lot of dentists out there that only see the bottom line and will do what it takes to make as much money as they can. This is how I came to be Dr. Yum's patient in the first place. I had been to two other dentists before seeing him. One said I had 9 cavities and needed two crowns, the other said I had 7 cavities and needed two root canals. Unfortunately for those other guys, my mom didn't raise a sucker and I had been a graphic designer for years. I could see what they were doing, they were adjusting the contrast to make it look like I had more cavities with major decay. They were trying to con me by making it look worse than it really was. I declined treatment and insisted on another opinion. My next stop was The Camarillo Dentist Practice. The staff was great right off the bat, you could tell they liked their jobs. Dr. Yum was friendly, funny and sincere. He was honest and took pride in his work and his practice. He didn't adjust the contrast or try to up-sell me in any way. That's when I knew, insurance or not, rich or poor, this guy was going to be my dentist. I would just have to make it work financially because it's a great investment. Incredible, incredible, incredible experience. ... Here's the story: my wife and I had great dental insurance during our nearly 8 years in San Diego. During that time, we never had any issues with our teeth, and never used our insurance for anything other than routine visits. We moved to Los Angeles a few months ago, and had to switch dental insurances. Our new insurance placed a SIX MONTH waiting period before they cover anything. So nice of them. :-) And OF COURSE, only a couple months after the move - my front tooth (which I chipped and had filled as a teenager) breaks - leaving me with a hillbilly smile. And really exasperating the whole hillbilly persona, I was uncovered by insurance, due to the "waiting period". (It would just be too easy for the tooth to break during the 8 years we had great dental, wouldn't it) So I did some research, and purchased a dental discount plan (through 1dental.com - the Aetna access plan - $7.95/month - it's a great discount plan that typically gives a 25% - 50% discount on dental procedures). I started looking around at the dentists in my area who accepted the discount plan (Glendale / North LA), but I simply did not trust any of them. Los Angeles is such a great city, but it's such a big city, and it's getting harder and harder to find businesses (of any sort - let alone dentists) that have that personal touch & customer-centric business ethic. So I decided to return to my VenCo roots, and see what the Camarillo area had to offer. I grew up in the Camarillo area - and what drove me nuts about Camarillo as a teenager is the same thing that drove me back to Camarillo this week for my dental work: the small-town environment where everybody knows their neighbor's names, where small local business still thrive, and where business owners care more about the people than the profits. Camarillo Dental Practice embodies what I'm referring to. They were refreshingly helpful and clear over the phone. They accepted the discount plan. The dentist, Dr Eric Yum, was honest, personable, and treated me as if I've been his patient for years. He was very upfront, very understanding of our "out of pocket" situation, and did not try to sell me on less important procedures. He did a complete exam, full set of x-rays, fixed my front tooth, and did some preventative work on some other teeth. All in all, I estimate it was at least $1,000 worth of work without insurance or discounts. With my discount, the final bill was $526. I purchased their "$50 for $100" Yelp deal, which brought my total down to $426, and my actual expense to $476. If you've ever been in a similar situation, you know that dental work can be stressful, unnerving, expensive, and you don't always know who you can trust. I LOATH looking for new medical/dental providers! It's nearly impossible to know what you're getting in to. I lucked out with Camarillo Dental. They are very accommodating, very friendly, it's a clean, modern office. Dr. Yum is great. I went in with a long-standing dental issue. Dr.Yum laid out all of my options, the probabilities of success for each, and the steps and impacts of the procedures. At no point did he try to sell me anything. His advice was strictly informative and I got to make all the decisions. I cannot express how refreshing it is to not be sold. Personally, that alone has cemented them as my dental facility for as long as I am in the area. Now, the down sides. I am giving them five stars because they suit MY needs perfectly. They operate almost exactly how I want to be treated as a patient. The only thing I am not a fan of is the non-disclosure of approximated prices. Unfortunately, this is an industry standard for these types of practices. They would/could not tell me any ballpark of how much the work was going to cost until I had already sat for the exam and consultation. I understand why they (nearly every dentist/doctor/vet ever) do this, but I feel manipulated by going in blind with absolutely no idea whether a place is going to be extortionate. Another note would be... how to word this... They give you a LOT of options. The decision really is yours. No one on the staff from the payment woman, the hygienist or the dentist gave me a declarative sentence about my teeth. They give you pragmatic options and probabilities. If you are looking for that type of authoritative leadership to make your health decisions, I don't think this place is for you. This place is for me, though. They've already proven to me that they are a place I can trust to give me an honest assessment of what they can/cannot do and the freedom for me to make those decisions myself. I feel as though they really care about doing quality, honest dental work and I really respect that. read more

I am a very nervous dental patient who hasn't been in for over five years. I was looking for a new dentist in this area and couldn't have been happier with Dr. Yum and Lauri. I do not hate going to the dentist, but I do hate when dentists try to sell you stuff you don't need. The dentists here don't do that; in fact they explain your options and the front desk will even calculate what it will cost you with your insurance plan, saving you calls to your insurance for research. Dr. Yum is really nice and laid-back and Angie the dental hygienist is great-understood that I have sensitive teeth and did her best to avoid agitating them! I highly recommend these dentists. My 91 year old father was in need of a new dentist and based on other reviews on Yelp, I selected Dr Yum. Our first visit was fantastic. Staff was extremely accommodating and conciliatory towards my aging father and did their best to ensure his comfort. After looking for a good dentist in the area for my girlfriend, I came across this dentist office and I'm glad we did. Setting up the initial visit was easy enough, just giving patient information and verifying insurance information. The front office staff was very polite and considerate. The day of the appointment went smoothly. We arrived at 0845 for a 0900 appointment and filled out 3 forms as the dental hygienists were arriving. One other patient arrived about 10 minutes after us and was called back immediately, which is understandable for established patients. About 2-5 minutes later we were called back by our hygienist, Kim. Kim was professional, very nice, easy to talk to and did her job very skillfully. She also gave excellent advice to my girlfriend. The initial appointment was 2 hours long and included x-rays and cleanings. After the cleaning, Dr. Yum sat and talked with us about any specific needs that needed to be addressed. After mentioning plans for braces that we had set up with Dr. Bruce Abbink, we discussed potential needs for cavities to be filled, extractions, and the potential need for an oral maxillofacial surgery. We were advised to talk to Dr. Abbink about how all this can be scheduled around the braces. The only reason for knocking off 1 star was for the vagueness on the treatment plan (Dr. Yum was unsure of the exact number of cavities were present). The office is great and I would definitely recommend this place to those looking for a good dentist. read more

Dr. Yum and all the staff were great. I came in for a concern regarding a wisdom tooth and a general exam. He thoroughly laid out a road map of everything I would need to do, when I should do it and what's important vs. what I can hold off on. Calm, communicative and took his time explaining all aspects of my dental health. More importantly, I never felt belittled/ unheard and I felt my concerns were addressed. Dr. yum being an all around friendly person was "the cherry on top". There was a couple year lapse in my twice a year visits while we were in Rhode Island, but that's it! Although I'm not really a fan of Yelp I wanted to leave a review of my experiences with the Camarillo Dental Practice staff and Dr Yum. I had neglected my oral health by putting off going to the dentist for about a decade. I knew I was going to need some serious work done and was not looking forward to it. Growing up seeing the dentist always gave me anxiety and I found the staff and Drs to be judgmental a lot of the time. "Do you floss?" "Ummm, yes" "LIAR!" Perhaps I never experienced a dental office with good "bedside manner" before. Whatever the reason, I dreaded the dentist. The time had come to make an appointment. I needed it all. The works. X rays, deep cleanings, an implant, wisdom tooth removed, a root canal maybe...I researched local dentists and I read some good reviews about this office and made my appointment. I have since had 4 appointments including a total deep cleaning and some one on one time with Dr Yum. I can honestly say that every experience has been a pleasure. From extremely personable and helpful front office staff to the hygienists who all treated me with wonderful care, to Dr Yum who explained my situation thoroughly, laid out my options and gave me his recommendations. I felt very comfortable with him and knew I had found my dentist. A few other little things I liked are the email appointment reminders where you can click and confirm an appointment and the follow up calls just to make sure I was doing alright after a procedure. Look, no one loves a trip to the dentist. Still, if you need to go, there's really no place quite like this practice. My husband and I have moved a ton in the past 10 years and finding a new dentist is no easy task. You want someone who knows what he's doing, understands your needs, and gets you through it as painlessly as possible. I've actually called medical practices and decided not to make an appointment, all based upon the person answering the phone. I suspect that if a practitioner truly cares about his patients he will make sure that everyone on staff represents his office well. Diana, the receptionist who answered when I first called Camarillo Dental Practice, was amazing. She was polite, professional, and even called my insurance company so that I would know what kinds of fees I was facing. While it was because of Diana that I originally made the appointment, I was glad I did. Lorena, the dental hygienist who worked with me, was extremely knowledgeable and ridiculously patient as she answered my questions. Finally, Dr. Yum was fabulous. He took time to explain everything he was doing, to ask if I had any questions, and even followed up the day after my treatment with a call to make sure everything was okay. Also -- and I've never experienced this before -- Dr. Yum gave me his cell phone number in case any questions arose. I agree with the comments of a previous poster who said, "He doesn't try to sell you on work you don't need." He simply told me what was going on with my teeth and gave me an idea of what I may need to have done at some point. Because I felt so good about the office (and because I'd like to keep these teeth for the rest of my natural life), I scheduled the work that needed to be done right away. Just came here today to have wisdom teeth extracted. Although I live about two hours away from Camarillo I made the trip because I've heard nothing but good things about this practice. It was my first time here and they made me feel very welcome. Dr. Chow took my xrays and made sure the xrays were clear enough to see my wisdom teeth. He is very nice and explained to me what needed to be taken out. He also asked about some other recent things I had done with my other dentist. He then did a check up of my teeth and told me I needed a few things done. Lucky for me the oral surgeon Dr. Landa was here today. I went there thinking I was only going to get two extracted but I ended up getting four done. I figured I might as well endure the pain all at the same time. The only painful thing about Dr. Landa's extraction was when he gave me the shots to numb my mouth. Besides that, the extraction of my wisdom teeth was very quick! It took only about an hour. He was very thorough about his work. Needless to say the extraction was painless. When I was about to leave I started feeling some pain and they were more than happy to give me a couple more shots for my long drive home since I was getting my prescription for the Vicodin and antibiotics at a pharmacy near my house. If I ever have a problem that my local dentist can't fix I would be more than happy to make the drive out to Camarillo to see these helpful doctors. Their pricing is not overpriced at all. Considering the great patient care they give. I definitely recommend this practice to anyone who is looking for honest dentist who will do the job right. read more

We have recently moved out of the state but I wanted to leave a review of the best dentist and staff I've ever come across! In the five years we lived in Camarillo Dr. Yum was our dentist. My kids were not afraid to go to the dentist every 6 months, the staff made them feel very comfortable. I had several fillings and my wisdom teeth removed without any issues over these years. The dental higentist that cleaned me teeth tore into my gums so bad, she was unnesicarily rough and rude.the dentist is friendly but also lacking in skill, he dug into my gums polishing a tooth and left a divet that took weeks to heal. I was a patient of Dr. Eric Yum for several years. He was always pleasant and seamed to do good work, however last month he proposed to remove my crown, remove decay under the crown, do a root canal, place a post and place a new crown on the tooth. I told him I wanted to see another dentist about doing an implant. I have four implants and I am very happy with the results. Dr. Yum said some people have a fetish with implants and left the room abruptly. After getting a second opinion I was told that a bridge would be the best way to proceed as the procedure Dr. Yum proposed would not last more than a year due to the lack of bone around the tooth. I called Dr. Yum and asked that he return my call to discuss the findings of the implant dentist. I called Dr. Yum the following day and again asked that he return my call. When he failed to return my calls I seeked out a third opinion from a local dentist. He agreed that Dr. Yum' procedure would be a short term solution and also suggested a bridge as the best long term solution. I am a retired pharmacist and have had dealings with physicians and dentist for many years. I would suggest looking for a dentist that would encourage a patient to get a second opinion and have the professionalism to return his patients phone calls. Sincerely, Jeff Dr. Yum, I read your comments and you were with a patient, your office manager assured me she would give you the message. Perhaps in the future when a patient takes the time to call you will return their calls instead of being a mind reader. An apology would be start, your cover up statement only makes your Honesty look suspect. Bottom line I was planning on asking you if you could do the bridge. An overwhelming fear of the dentist and a painful and costly experience, caused me to take a four year hiatus from caring for my oral health. I was experiencing some pain and I searched online for the best dentist out here in Camarillo. The Camarillo Dental Practice kept popping up, and after reading the Yelp reviews, I took a leap. MAN am I glad I did. I have to have some work done in the next few weeks, but I'm honestly VERY excited. The staff, as whole, made me feel like a friend, not a patient. I was never belittled or embarrassed because of gross delay in oral healthcare. I was able to ask A LOT of questions without feeling rushed. I had the most gentle teeth cleaning, and it felt like I was talking to my friend whilst the hygienist was caring for me. My husband is in the military and we move often, but I hope we are able to be here for longer, because I fear I will never find a team quite like this to take care of me and my family!!!!! I don't think that there are enough thanks that I can give to everyone for what they have done for my oral health, my OLD fear of dentists and for my overall health (I have heart disease and I know oral health and heart health are linked).
