I drive often and almost 95 percent of the times I pass a caltrans truck parked along the freeways or highways the employees are always just sitting inside the CABS of their trucks. No accountability at all. Check Victorville location worst of all times. You see trucks and employees but there just sitting period. In the last say 6 months ive past hundreds of caltrans trucks only one employee actually working and that was up in bishop ca he was fixing a little sign but he was doing something!! caltrans' vast hideous, cement plaza greets the visitor. thanks thom mayne (the architect), this is just what we need in los angeles. more uninspired, penal-looking architecture by mayne. how does he keep getting awarded these enormous projects?? award-winning from whom i cannot imagine. vestigial 1980s flourishes. all singularly vacant & boring. virtually NO greenspace or plantings & a complete ABSENCE of SHADE is a disgrace in a city that already gets so hot from being largely paved over. it was 95° on the day i was there, i expect the plaza was even hotter than that. excellent air conditioning, however, if you have to wait in the lobby as i did. front desk security very nice & helpful. went to pick up a caltrans claim form for under $10,000, which is a category handled by this office, district 7. Say Hello to Los Angeles's Death Star. This death fortress is one of the coolest looking buildings in LA and has no ties to the army. It's the Caltrans headquarters. Who knew caltrans needed a death fortress. I was riding my motorcycle back from Sequoia National Park and my cellphone flew off my motorcycle on the 5 freeway. It was too dangerous to stop and try to find it myself. My cell was in a brand new QuadLock case and all! I called CalTrans to see if they happen to find it, could they let me know and they found it! They called me right away. Thank you for fixing your damaged gate but only partially. The spikes are straight but the gate still doesn't meet well enough for me to push and close myself, and the graffiti is left behind. If it was artistic beautiful graffiti I don't mind so much but it's crappy shoddy ugly as hell graffiti. Sometimes I hear them spraying the cans. Yes cal trans is a necessary agency but thier scheduling of sweeping should not be performed during peak hours but rather between 10pm and 5am. But my big gripe is when a major project is underway on any freeway the lack and monitoring of Detour signs is unbelievable, where are the inspectors and personnel responsible for monitoring this activity? read more

Are people seriously rating CalTrans based on the architecture of their building? CalTrans is a necessary and somewhat effective highway maintenance organization in California. They work very hard to keep the highways and freeways in California clean and functional. Their brightly colored white and orange vehicles are nearly impossible to miss and the staff I've encountered have been very friendly and helpful. I do ding them a couple stars for two reasons. One - trying to get in contact with them to report a problem can be difficult through their website. Two - on several occasions I've encountered routine landscaping or sweeper train activity during rush hour in Southern California. This has resulted in worse traffic congestion than normal. Supervisors need to work harder to schedule work which will impact traffic to off-peak hours only. read more

Designed by Thomas Maine, it is by far the most unique building in LA (despite what you may actually think about the aesethics), and is already monumental. I'm sure the workers themselves are a fine group of people. But their management and operations suck. They shut down major sections of freeways and interchanges on Friday evenings. They close three offramp's off in a row. They take 10 years to complete a project should be completed in less than a year. Typical government bureaucracy. They don't give a damn about the consumer, Which is us the taxpayer. They need to go private. Get some incentives. If you don't produce you don't get another contract. read more

How about that repaving job on the 210 West bound thru La Crescenta? It's as bad as it was before the 186 million was spent and what, 4 years to almost complete? Sections of the #3 lane still have broken and cracked concrete and the new concrete is very ruff. Also, I think Hover Dam was built in less time that this project of repaving has taken. read more

This building is awesome! Thom Mayne designed CalTrans building! Pros: Gorgeous, imposing architecture. Love the impressions of the wood grain from the concrete forms that you can see on the 1st Street side of the building. Provides a great bit of "open space" in the middle of downtown - lots of benches and places to sit (make calls, smoke a cig, re-collect your thoughts, prep for a meeting) in the courtyard that faces Main Street. Pretty tasty cafeteria on the first floor. Its surprisingly good. Great tuna melts and fries! Cons: Some of the meeting rooms are way too cold! Turn down the thermostat, please! The service in the cafeteria could be more friendly AND they sometimes run out of food by 3:30 PM. Sometimes you have been stuck in City Hall all day and this is the only place to grab a sandwich before your next destination but they've run out of food! Boo! read more

The fwy renovation on 210 /134 junction is horrible. Caltrans made no efforts to warn drivers of contruction and closure on parts of the fwy. So, I am caught off guard with detours and find it hard to appreciate Caltrans efforts to improve our fwy system. The Caltrans people come off as disrespectful to residents who needs to use these fwy access. read more

They don't actually fulfill reports. I called about a dead dog, where the 105 east turns into the 405 south. It's on the right shoulder, right before the El Segundo Blvd exit. The off ramp is in the city of Hawthorne. My first call they said they already had a report on the dog. I called a second time when the dog was still there 5 days later. I saw Cal Trans cleaning about 2 days after my second call. They were literally working where the dead dog is. The poor thing is still there. I get you're busy but when you're in the exact same vicinity as a report and still do nothing, it feels pretty intentional. The poor thing has been there well over a week. GOOD POLICY, BAD ENFORCEMENT. In Caltrans there are many good policies such as zero tolerance of discrimination and harassment, training & rotation, upward mobility, and so on. The bottom line is who is going to enforce the good policies? Here is an example. The individual Development Plan (IDP) should be provided to each employee every year. The first page is Evaluation from supervisor. The second page is Performance Objectives and Plans for Achieving Objective for staff to fill out. It is a good policy. However I have worked with Caltrans 15 years and I only got one IDP. That only IDP was done by supervisor only and he did not follow instructions to let me fill out second page. Nobody enforce supervisor to do it in a correct way. He did not provide me duty statement for 5 years. When he finally created one in year 2010, but effective in year 2005. How could it be effective before it was existed? Another example is Staff Expectations. It should be signed by both supervisor and staff. It emphasized cooperation, fairness, honesty, respect, and directors' policies such as Equal Employment Opportunity, Discrimination and Harassment and so on. In reality I am the victim of Staff Expectations. I believed those expectations so I got fired in year 2005 and I stayed home for six months. Caltrans then did not follow court order to process reinstatement, but simply cancelled termination. When I emailed my supervisor about discrimination and harassment in the office, he sent me an email in the middle of the night that he deleted my email without reading it. Expectations is for employee only not for employer. The other example is Perjury. Caltrans forced me to enter my time sheet that I worked 8 hours a day, five days a week, for six months that I was terminated by Caltrans in year 2005. NO ENFORCEMENT, NO POLICY. read more

You can't avoid this monstrosity, but it's certainly not worth a trip unless you savor dystopian architecture (according to one article, the building is popular for film crews -- but only for filming things like "The Island" and "Alias", where unsettling, cold and futuristic are the hallmarks.) It looms over First Street like a threatening, posturing teenager, forever in your face and defying you to challenge it. Unfortunately, there's not a thing we can do about it other than keep your eyes steadily towards gleaming City Hall and relinquish it to your peripheral vision as you walk or drive past. read more
