The welcome is genuine and they have their feet on the ground. They serve beer made down the road and it's popular with real ale fans. The food is good -basic and inexpensive - Ploughman's and sarnies, for example. Good choice of well made cheeses and pate. I love the double seats in the porch. I have fond memories of taking my father here and sharing a seat here. And it's a lovely place to go for a walk along The Ridgeway before or after. And it's wonderful to see such a beautiful old Berkshire building. Lovely location and a pretty garden. Inside is lovely - nothing added, nothing taken away. This is the real thing. There is a hard core group of drinkers and "local personalities" that can be overwhelming for the uninitiated, this however if your on you own or in a boring marriage / relationship can make for amusing viewing. This aside, the relatively new management team have really turned this pub around from what was a bear pit to a well organised and comfortable pub with the best locally priced food and beer. Fosters for instance is 70p cheaper a pint than the relatively nearby Badgers Wood. It also sells a very reasonable choice of wine at very competitive prices. There are even guest Real Ales to keep almost every happy apart from me, come on people lets have a quality Cider on tap, not that rubbish Strong**w. Recently benefiting a big refit this pub has comfortably retaken its no.1 spot in Tadley. With great value food, comparatively cheap beer, several new tellies with Sky and ESPN sports makes it a sensible choice for watching the big match or having bit of a sesh with mates.

Hubs had fish n chips (he never gets tired of it) and said it was the best one of our trip. I had the hoisin duck salad. The duck was shredded and crispy. Yum! I found the sauce a bit sweet, but with a little vinegar it was perfect. Neighbors were coming and going, greeting each other happily -- terrific atmosphere.

They recently went through a heavy makeover of the restaurant and now the look really matches the food. They've kept the comforting pub bar and quiet corners but also installed a family friendly restaurant area that opens onto an impressive beer garden with a two story Wendy house! But to return to the more important aspects of having a restaurant, the food is really good. The service is fast and every time i've gone they've been incredibly friendly. I've even blundered into a quiz night by total chance which was really well run (though i might be saying that as i won a bottle of wine!). Friendly, affordable, good quality, i forgot to mention the beer but there are some fine ales and bitters as well as the standard fair on tap. Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable and the service is brilliant. I love the wine list, but I'm being torn away from making my way through that to try their excellent range of spirits!! They have a green and relaxing beer garden with a cool looking hut for kids (no more salt and vinegar crisps and cola by a fireplace! ), and even their own veggie patch where they grow a few herbs for the kitchen.
