I didn't expect too much because this was a hole in the wall next to the gas station. Contrary to my belief, I was welcomed by smiling faces and kind staff. We sat at a booth in the back and our server's name was Terry. Again, contrary to my belief, teenagers receive not so considerate service. Terry was very kind, caring, and tended to the needs at our table despite our youth. The food was exceptional to say the least. My boyfriend got a large Old Fashioned burger, while I got a medium Swiss and Mushroom burger. Next time I will be going to a small because the portion sizes were larger than expected, but I had gotten the biggest bang for my buck. A personal rule of mine is when you go to a restaurant and the food is good, the dessert is usually bad and vice versa. This little hole in the wall broke my rule. Not only were the burger amazing, the Banana Cream Pie was exquisite. Will be visiting again.

Route 66 Café at the Market may have been another stop for our Oklahoma Route 66 Passport, but this…read moreis the kind of place I would seek out even without a stamp involved! After several stops along the Mother Road, my wife and I were hungry--but we still had a long drive home. We decided to split lunch and debated between the chicken-fried steak dinner and the chicken-fried steak sandwich. Either way, chicken-fried steak was going to happen! The sandwich won, and it was an excellent choice. As a self-appointed chicken-fried steak connoisseur who has sampled them across Oklahoma, I can confidently say this one ranks near the top. The steak was tender, the breading was perfectly crisp, and they added just the right amount of mayo. Nothing fancy--just a really well-made and delicious sandwich. We also ordered fried okra, which arrived before the sandwich. It was piping hot, crispy, and cooked exactly the way fried okra should be. We happily munched on it while waiting for the main event. Natasha provided friendly, attentive service and brought us an extra plate so we could easily divide the sandwich and fries. Those small touches make a difference. The Route 66 décor and classic diner atmosphere added plenty of character. It felt like the perfect place for our final road-trip meal before heading home. Clinton is a little over an hour and a half from our house, and I would gladly make the drive again--especially since breakfast is my thing and that menu still needs to be explored! Passport or not, Route 66 Café at the Market is worth seeking out. Order the chicken-fried steak sandwich, don't skip the fried okra, and make sure you bring your appetite!

I made a quick detour off I-40 at Exit 66 to visit the iconic Cafe 66, just five minutes from the…read morehighway and impossible to miss. From the outside, the branding leans heavily into the Route 66 identity--logos are everywhere, setting the expectation for a nostalgic roadside dining experience. Stepping inside, however, the atmosphere takes a different direction. Rather than embracing classic Americana, the décor feels modern, highlighted by whimsical cow artwork adorned with flower crowns. It's charming in its own way, but not the vintage Route 66 ambiance I was expecting. One thing that deserves high praise is the cleanliness. The café is immaculate, from the dining room to the overall presentation, reflecting a team that clearly takes pride in maintaining the restaurant. The food, unfortunately, was less memorable. The oatmeal was overly thick and dry, lacking the creamy comfort you'd expect. Buttered toast carried an off flavor, suggesting the griddle or butter station could use a refresh. The signature pancake, dusted with a powdered sugar "66" logo, was visually appealing and easily the meal's most Instagram-worthy item, but it too was disappointingly dense. Where Cafe 66 truly shines is its service. Every staff member I encountered was warm, welcoming, and eager to help first-time visitors feel at home. Their hospitality left the strongest impression of the visit. In my opinion, Cafe 66 seems to be transitioning away from being a destination built on Route 66 nostalgia and toward becoming a dependable neighborhood café for the Clinton community. There's nothing wrong with that--in fact, it's probably the more sustainable business model. But travelers seeking an authentic trip back in time may leave feeling that the iconic branding promises more nostalgia than the dining experience ultimately delivers.
