As far as I know this is the 2nd prison i've visited my father at. Between the first (approximately 9yrs ago) and here; this is one was much smoother as far as processing. The parking lot was fairly big. It didn't seem to far from the Friends Outside center located at the end of the parking lot. Upon approaching the visitor processing center you a greeted by a guard who is checking in visitors by the time of appointment. He was not bothered by my billion questions regarding mine and my grandmother's appointment time. We arrive 2 hours earlier so we knew there would be a wait if we couldn't be processed sooner. There were benches outside so we sat there as we waited. We waved in within 35 minutes. Entering the processing center there was a line for you to turn in your paper slip. Once you've done so you take a seat to wait to have the last name of the inmate you are visiting, called. That was like in 5 minutes. Unfortunately I had to have my bra fixed in order for me to enter but that was my fault. CO's were thorough and informative of what was needed and what to correct by the next visit. Minus 1 star because vending machines holding the food were bare. Although i'm not fond of my father my grandma was looking forward to buying him a lot of crap. Lol. She didn't get too. Machines were stocked at 1 which after that they called people up by inmate names but i'm not sure if they were making a lost or not it was 2 when we left so we didn't get to get anything after the re-stock aside from more sodas. read more

I have fond memories of Calipatria State Prison. I spent almost 5 years working as a CDCR contract employee for all of their prisons . I loved Calipatria the most! I had the honor of working with really Great Doctors at Calipatria, especially Dr Katrina B. and Dr David H. ! They are dedicated and committed to helping the inmates. The cafeteria had a large selection and decent grill, but I usually just ate salads or soup, and these were good. It was always hot as "Hell" in Calipatria 9 months out of the year. Usually 100+ and sometimes 115 degrees F. or more! But then I share the sentiment of Mark Twain who said: "Heaven is preferred for it's Climate, and Hell for it's People".... read more

I have never visited Prison so I really can't give a higher rating than a one star because really it's not my favorite place to be. however I came to know about this place because I found out that my junior high crush was there and I just had to see him again after 18 years of not knowing of his existence of course I was extremely excited. It was a long 4 hour drive for me and once I was there going thru the whole processing just made me regret ever going, I want to believe I dress pretty decent not provoking any man to slobber but I was given hell for my attire literally these people want you to look like a hobo. I really wish they would be a little more rational and not make it such a bad experience I feel they treat us visitors like criminals when we are law abiding citizens and deserve the same respect they want in return. Also the prices for food on those vending machines are RIDICULOUS !! For one person to have a decent snack and meal it's $25.00 c'mon aside from that they have expired food??! also they should enforce appointment only visits and keep track of the population so they wouldn't have to cancel people's "appointments" due to overcrowd. This place was mediocre. I was really looking forward to going, they were disappointing.

I was locked in this place for a few months; first in the high-security area during intake, and then on the minimum-security yard. This place is better than others, but it still sucks. I suggest watching one or more of the many documentaries about California prisons. When the war on drugs is finally over, many prisons across the country will be closed down. read more
