I've looked for them at every supermercado in the OC in addition to all swap meets selling those puffy orange wheel snacks. No luck anywhere. Typically I go to the 7-11 close to where everyone exits off the cruise. This time we decided to venture further and found Calimax. It's apx two blocks northeast to Papas and Beer. It's clean, the selection is decent and they have a ton of chips! :) My Cheetos were 27.50 pesos for 150 grams (4.5 oz) or 13.90 pesos for 100 grams. The math doesn't add up to buy the bigger package but it's still cheaper than buying at a 7-11. I also got some spices, containers of packaged salsa and allergy meds for a fraction of what I would pay in the US. We walked out with two full bags and it was $12 US. Score!! The bank has a better conversion rate than money exchange so I used my credit card everywhere I went. At the time I went, it averaged out to 20+ pesos to 1 US dollar if I charged it vs 18:1 if I had converted my $ for pesos. For those uncomfortable wandering off, i would suggest to travel in pairs. A woman from San Diego who travels here often said anything more than 2 blocks past Papas is sketchy. Calimax would be on the border if that was true.

There are several locations and it's worth stopping by each one because they have unique pieces that has been hand picked by the owner directly from the artists in Taxco. There is always a discount that is at a set standard throughout the stores if you pay by cash (USD is accepted). The more you buy, the better the discount! There is also a nice price range so that you can spend as much or as little as you like. I especially enjoyed looking at the curated collections from the local/up and coming artists. I actually ran into the owner and ended up having an amazing conversation with him. He made some great local recommendations and he was also very passionate about supporting and highlighting the artists. I was surprised by his kindness and transparency and would highly recommend stopping by for a chat/browse. I bought 2 rings and a bracelet and some beautiful bookmarks made by an artist in taxco. Just the type of souvenir I was looking for!

I loved one necklace with a silver setting and amber that had occlusions making it more real to me. Speaking of, some places sell fake amber that you have to check to be sure yours is real. See http://www.rockhounds.com/rockshop/trueamber.shtml The woman helping us knew a great deal and was always there if we had questions but also gave us space to look. We also got to see a piece with an insect in a container with a magnifier. We were also able to get a bit of a discount since we lived here and I felt we got a great deal. The owner prides his retail award gold star rating which distinguishes his store as a reputable business which is an accreditation that is not given out to most other stores in the area he told us only two others have this accreditation. First off, what this mall is not... it is not Plaza Peninsula (TJ), Antara (Cdmx), nor Andares (Gdl). However, it is a place where you can shop for everyday items at stores such as Sears. There is quite a variety of food options, of which we decided on Subway. I know, not very adventurous of us as far as food for this mall, but most of the other options didn't really interest us. The service at most stores is pretty decent, especially in the bigger chain stores. But decent service can also be found in the mom and pops type of places (my girlfriend went to a hair salon here, and they were nice people). If you're looking for value, this may be a good place to go. Save for the parking, you have to pay for it. But the fare is not high at all. This is a decent mall, busy when we came here, and staffed by friendly people.
