I hired California Decking & Waterproofing for a deck waterproofing project after experiencing serious water leakage. There is a living space directly under the deck, so the leaks were a major concern. The project started around December 15, and shortly after- starting December 25 - we had record-breaking rainfall in SoCal. Even before the entire project was fully completed, the team had already prepared and secured the waterproofing properly, and despite more than 10 days of continuous rain, there was no further water damage at all. I did not have a great experience with this company unfortunately. While we were in escrow on a property, Carlos came out to give an estimate for us on replacing failed waterproofing along with ripping out rotted wood (from the failed waterproofing proofing) and replacing some boards on the deck. I had to follow up with Victor several times as his estimated time to deliver the quote kept changing. At one point, he asked me if I wanted him to pull over on the side of the road to send it to me; this was probably my 4th or 5th time talking to him. I understand how busy they are but they knew we had a very narrow window for getting the estimate in hand due to our inspection contingency with escrow. Anyway, finally got their quote and it came in at 2.5x the cost of other companies for comparable scope of work. I guess that's their way of saying they don't want our business! Regardless, not the way I want to be treated as a prospective customer. 2 stars because Carlos was super knowledgeable and if he had been our only interaction, this may have turned out differently. read more

I was in construction for fifty years, now retired for 20, and as I told the crew, I have worked with good, great and excellent subcontractors, but they, and their work is amazing, a real rarity. Professional, timely and careful to pay attention to all the necessary details. We had an early miscommunication which happens on occasion. With no questions asked they corrected the problem immediately and forged ahead. Frankly I was stunned! You just never come across such service. I have had problems with this particular portion of my deck for years leaking. This will be the third time it has been relaid and I'm positive it won't leak for years to come, because their "AL System By Life Deck" is like nothing I've ever seen before used on my deck. A cementitious waterproofing system which is comprised of several reduntant layers. Check out Life Deck's YouTube channel and pay a visit to California Decking offices, it's worth it. The point is I am incredibly impressed all around. Service, quality, and a bunch of other adjectives, besides them being truly friendly to work with. It doesn't get any better than this. There was an issue with a door pan they installed which slowed down the door installation, but as soon as they were made aware of the issue they rectified it. Some advice to anyone needing a waterproofer: give plenty of lead time before you need the work done. California Decking put in a Desert Crete deck and install iron railing for me in winter 2018. It was a $15k job. They are experienced. They do hundreds of deck a year. Pro: - Victor and his crew was nice to get along with. - I needed to replace railings as well. Cal deck was the only who offered it. - The first time we picked a color that turned out too dark. Victor repainted for me free of charge. - After 3 years the deck showed some cracks. I am sure they did everything right the first time as I saw every steps. Maybe my deck / house has settlement or vibration issue. Victor came out and offered to fix it as part of the warranty: skim coat and fiber glass the whole deck again rather than a spot fix. Deck leaked after 3 years. The deck overlaps old house and new extension so maybe due to house movement. Warranty is 8 years. Victor came out and fixed it for me. read more

But I wanted to get a second opinion, since the first estimate seemed kinda high to me. Enter California Decking & Waterproofing. I made an appointment to have Victor come out to give me an estimate on a Saturday morning. When he didn't show (with no contact from Victor), I called the main line (reaching the voicemail), and found the e-mail address, and sent an e-mail. I finally received a response from Victor: "I really apologize for today. I had a family emergency and could not call you." Although I found it fishy that Victor couldn't even text me to say "I had an emergency and will be late or have to reschedule," and just no-showed instead, I decided to let it go. Victor agreed to come by the next day - Sunday - which was his "off" day, to prepare to provide an estimate. While Victor did show up the next day, I never received an estimate from Victor. I even called and left a voicemail asking for the status about a week later, but never received any response. After first "no showing" without even calling, you'd think Victor would have gone out of his way to send an estimate promptly. The fact that he didn't ever bother to send one is shocking. Had a water leak back in December. I was told that the water leak is coming from my balcony. I called up Victor to have him inspect it. He has his team take a look and told me that I needed to take part the balcony and install the a "waterproofing system". I told him ok I paid him close to $2000 for the down payment they wanted in advance. At this point , I thought ok they will fix it and I don't have to worry about it. They guys came and did the balcony. I paid the remainder $3000. I asked him what is the warranty if there is still a water leak? He says 8 years and not to worry. March comes around and it's raining heavily. Water was still from the balcony and I called up Victor and told him it's still leaking. Can you please take a look at it. He says we have to wait till the rain stops and we will take a look. I told him to call me so that I can get this fixed soon. I never got a call back from him. I called the customer service and says the leak is not from the balcony. I told them you inspected it and that you should go by your work. I am cheated out $5000. I was lied to by Victor about the waterproofing. I felt like they did a shoty job and just wanted to take the money and no follow up. They are liars and I highly do not recommend there service go elsewhere and I am reporting them to BBB about this. read more

Victor was one of three vendors I called for a quote, and Victor was far and above the best of all of them. Not only was his price incredibly reasonable, but he provided a detailed quote with two scenarios for best and worst case, as well as providing two of the nicest, most professional, hardest working, and conscientious people I've met in LA!
