I had a bent back door on a modular home, two hinges stripped out, and the door was falling out. I had California Craftsman come out to give me a quote. Not very many companies were able to work on modular homes, but they came through. Ryan, the manager, knew I was having time restraints because the door would not close all the way, so he rushed on it for me. Andre and Garret came out to install the door two weeks ahead of schedule. I appreciated having it installed, and the door is of excellent quality. I will have them come out again to replace my dry rot front door at some point. I recommend this company to people. read more

We really enjoyed having Boden, our installer at our house. Which is saying a lot because replacing all of your windows while you're living/working in the house is tricky. He was friendly, professional, and did great work. He made very good friends with our crazy dogs. He cleaned up every night before he left, and he was on time each day. I've been going back and forth on whether or not to share my experience with California Craftsman and Milgard. As a business owner myself, I would always want a customer to give me the opportunity to make things right rather than merely leaving a review. That being said, I have been working with California Craftsman diligently for over a year to resolve my issues with no end in sight. We had a large project consisting of 33 windows and 5 sliding doors which cost $75,000+ and was completed around February 2022. The experience leading up to installation was fine as well as the installation itself. The crew was professional, cleaned up when they were done and communicated well. It is really the experience after project closure that prompted my negative review. To this day, 12 months later, I have scaffolding outside of my house and am still trying to resolve many issues. Most, if not all, of the problems I am having with the windows are due to manufacturing defects. 12 Windows have imperfections and debris between the panes, 1 sliding door does not seal which allows water to pour onto our carpet when it rains (the carpet is ruined), we are missing wheel adjustment plugs on all the sliding doors and there is a missing screen. Any time I ask California Craftsman to help, they tell me it is a Milgard issue and they are at the whim of Milgard's service department. Any one of these alone wouldn't be a big deal, but together and with the length of time this has been going on and how much time I've spent on the phone and emailing both companies, it points to a true breakdown of service and accountability. I place fault equally on both companies and would suggest California Craftsman think a little more carefully when selling Milgard products to their customers. Milgard has been terrible to work with and I've never seen a more disorganized company, but California Craftsman has been too quick to point the finger rather than make things right for their customer. The remedies so far: California Craftsman sent two replacements for the wheel plugs, but they were the wrong color. I've received 2 separate screens, both the wrong size. Just recently, Milgard arrived to replace the defective windows only to realize they have the completely wrong order and needed to reorder all the replacements again. Although my service rep with California Craftsman has been friendly and empathetic, I never once spoke to the owner and/or a manager. Who knows if they are even aware. None of these items are resolved as of writing this review. read more

We had a garden window installed yesterday by Mason, Martine, and Ryan. We are extremely pleased with the whole experience and results! They arrived when they said they would, and very quickly got down to business. They protected our floors and put up plastic while they were cutting out the old window, so there was no mess. They were professional, courteous, and tidy. I was prepared for the worst, as I have asthma and allergies to dry wall dust, but I needn't have worried! All the debris from the installation was vacuumed up. All in all, this was one of the most positive experiences we have had with a contractor, and would definitely hire them again. We desperately needed new windows and doors for our place in Truckee. Our funky original '80s windows with unique shapes were starting to show their age both functionally and aesthetically. California Craftsman was great in helping us pick the right Marvin windows that would work for our home which is subject to extreme winters. Once the windows arrived from Marvin, California Craftsman's installers did a great job and kept us apprised of how the project was going. The installers overcame many challenges presented in our house with unique shapes, non-square walls, and a crazy patch work of trim to make everything look perfect. We love the fit and finish of the new doors and window. It's satisfying to have everything work so smoothly and know that our place is protected from the elements. I had two windows replaced today in my art studio by the California Craftsman. Three wonderful young man did the job and I am immensely impressed by them. Mason, Tyler and Martin did incredible job. They were very skilled, polite, very respectful and left the place perfectly clean. I don't have words to say how pleased I am with their work. Thank you very much dear Mason, Tyler and Martin. I also have to thank Ryan Hall who did the estimate and gave me a very fair price. He came by today to make sure everything was ok. All four of them helped me with a piece of furniture. I finally saved enough to replace all of the windows in my house (13 to be exact) and started interviewing companies to both purchase and install. I came across California Craftsman and stopped in. I met Dave Hada in sales and he walked me through he process. He showed up at my house on schedule, measured and gave me a quote the next day. Great selection of brands. I placed my deposit down and a week later their Production Manager Ryan Juergenson showed up to remeasure to ensure accuracy. I asked Ryan who he recommended for installation. Ryan gave me the name of Robert Fuller and I had that added to the contract. Great experience with Robert and his installation team. Bottom line is that I am 100% satisfied with the whole experience. Unfortunately I cannot give them a good review despite how much I wanted to. Originally we chose California Craftsman because of they were knowledgeable and personable. Many problems after our order arrived; windows were ordered the wrong size and poor attention to the order and communication with us. Delayed our project several weeks. Customer service after all the windows were installed has been terrible; the salesperson ignored calls and emails. Had to contact the manager David and things are still not resolved; we have been in our house for several months now and once again, had to call again today to see when they are going to repair the problems with our french door and waiting on another screen; very simple things but can't get them to follow through. Definitely find another company to work with, it is worth the extra money to have good customer service. Also would go with Simonton windows if we had to do it all over again. Milgard has very poor quality control it seems now. read more

My experience wasn't as good as the previous review. I went in Thursday September 17th for a price on a replacement window for our kitchen. I gave the woman all the info, brand, size, etc. and she said someone would get back to me the next day (Friday) with a price. Well, here it is a week later and no one has contacted me. Granted this was only one window, so maybe it wasn't worth their time. They could of just told me that and I would have more respect for them as a business. I'm also a contractor and you can bet I won't contact them for a whole house of windows after this experience. Ended up going over to Home Depot, which could special order the same brand, and were able to give me a price and order the window while I was there. Now...I'm not usually a fan of Home Depot, but in this case they weren't the worse, California Craftsman was! read more

I simply cannot imagine a business better run or more focused on making their customers happy. I have just finished having all of the windows and patio doors replaced in my San Francisco home, and these guys are incredible. And the amazing part is how I found them. I began doing research on windows, something I've never bought before. I went to Consumer Reports first, and followed that with a visit to Marvin Windows website. I registered for more information, and the very next day I got an email from California Craftsman offering their services. It was a very gracefully written offer to bid on my job. I replied that while I was happy to listen to what they had to say, I wanted to be very clear that I lived in San Francisco, quite a way from Auburn and Grass Valley, and that my job might be too small for them. Doug, one of the owners, and I had several very helpful (to me) email exchanges and phone calls. It was very clear that he knew just what he was talking about, helped me me understand options, and was only interested in meeting my specific needs. He and a colleague came all the way down to see the house and measure my windows. He drew up a bid, first for Marvin wood windows, that was beyond my budget and then drew up a second bid for Milgard vinyl windows, a more appropriate choice to replace my 30 year old aluminum windows. The price was much more in line with my wallet as well. I paid a deposit and they were ordered. The day before the agreed upon day for installation came, and a veritable caravan came down to SF-two trucks, two trailers, and FIVE installers! They dropped off their tools and the windows at my home and went to check in to the hotel where they would stay for the next two nights. This was so they could start bright and early Monday morning and not have just driven 2-3 hours. They started at 7:30 the next morning and worked steadily through the day. For a nominal additional cost they added beautiful trim and sills to my previously very plain windows, and they are now all ready for the painters. Yes, this was a big investment in my home. But Doug and his colleagues have made what would otherwise have been a nerve-wracking and bewildering experience one of confidence that I paid the best price and have the best installation of the best for me windows. They enhance the value of my home and will last for many years. I know that California Craftsman will be there to take care of me in the future. These are the real good guys, people. They only sell and install the best lines of the best windows. You couldn't be in better hands. I'm thrilled. read more

We replaced all our windows and put in a new sliding glass door in our mountain property. California Craftsman were outstanding to work with from the estimate through to the finished product! We ordered our windows knowing there could be a delay due to snow conditions, but none of us had any idea that we would get snow so late in the season! Our project was delayed only because of weather. They kept in contact with us over the months of waiting out the delayed winter. Then... COVID19 hit! FINALLY our windows are in....our slider is in...and all look amazing! We went with the windows that are better with blocking sound since we are close to a major highway and WOW what a difference! I'm updating my review since I was able to work out some of the issues with David at CA craftsman. The inconveniences and delays i experienced were actually attributed to BMD company and not CA Craftsman. BMD is the distributor for Marvin and was the responsible party for not getting the sliding door screens delivered at installation, for the tilt & turn window not closing, for the additional time scheduling a service call and providing sliding patio doors with the wrong size bottom rail. David exercised prompt communication with the appropriate people at CA Craftsman and BMD but was reliant on their efforts to resolve the issues in a timely manner. Although it was 8 weeks before BMD got a techician out to fix the T&T window and some other minor items, Joe did a goid job and all is working fine now. RE: the wrong bottom rail on patio sliders This was the biggest annoyance since BMD dragged out their investigation even though David and I promptly provided all the necessary paperwork and photos to prove that what was received was not what was ordered. I agreed to accept the doors - which should have saved BMD the cost of replacing them but It took 4 weeks for BMD to admit that the door rails were the wrong measurement and finally agree to refund the extra cost i was charged for the doors i didn't receive. The Marvin windows and doors are very nice and after all is done we are enjoying them. Tip to new Customers: Make sure you document every detail on your order. If it isn't written down, it doesn't exist. read more

I would like to share the experience we had in having new windows and doors installed into our home. After shopping, around at Home Depot and local glass and window stores, we found a company that completely filled our needs at a home and garden show near us. California Craftsman were at the event showcasing the many styles and manufacturers of windows and doors. They highly recommended Milgard brand. Their knowledge of window technology so impressed us that after studying the web to research little more we contacted them for a bid. Doug the salesman and Jon the job coordinator came out and gave us some alternative suggestions to our original plan which we had not considered but gratefully accepted. Their alternatives, using Milgard windows gave us more light, convenience and style. After a couple of weeks of waiting (Milgard has a manufacturing plant close to our residence) California Craftsman came out to install. As with most folks, we were sort of dreading the invasion of construction workers stepping on plants, dragging dirt into the house, swearing and listening to riotous music played at maximum volume. We need not have worried about any of these things. The workmen showed up on time and ready to work. Also here were Doug and Jon to make sure all workers knew their particular jobs and that all windows, frames and supplies were there. The work was admittedly loud, but at the end of the day, all eleven windows and sliding doors were installed and working. They had all parts, paint and other supplies on hand, meaning the crew of five (Clark, Fletch, Ryan Justin, and Addine) kept working all the time. And let me tell you, they REALLY worked. I cannot tell you enough about what a pleasure it is to see a job go as well as the one they did for us. Another partial day with a crew of two had this job finished beautifully. I would recommend California Craftsman, and Milgard Windows to anyone who wants true craftsmanship both in the manufacture and installation of windows and doors..... We recently replaced several windows and added sliding doors. In addition, we had repairs done above windows and doors. Project was handled very professionally by Doug - the project manager. Ryan and crew did a wonderful job with installation and were very prompt. They cleaned up after themselves and didn't leave a mess. Only issues I experienced initially, were communication- took awhile to get a response to my calls or text messages. Also our start date took longer then we anticipated. My Husband and I have been in our home a year and are ready to begin a second major remodel project. We came across this company at the local Home Show and fell in love with their display of custom bi-fold doors. After speaking with the salesman for quite a bit of time, showing him pictures of our door project and approximate measurements, he felt he could give us a very rough estimate for our bi-fold door project to cost approximately $20K. We went ahead left our project door measurements and contact information with the vendor, then waited patiently for a call from the company for a site visit, however nearly three weeks went by and nothing. We opted to call them directly and made a site-appointment at our home within the next week. Unfortunately, that appointment was a "no-show"; however we found out later there was a family emergency. When the salesman eventually came to our home, we discussed some options and he took official measurements, promising a quote from two different manufacture door companies and variations of the work (taller doors vs. standard size) within the next week. Again, we heard nothing. We finally emailed the salesman directly, only to find he somehow had our phone number, email AND our last name wrong (?). An email estimate was sent to us and after reading said email which included only one quote (which was riddled with spelling errors), our official project "estimate" was $11K OVER the "rough verbal estimate" we were initially given. If there is anything that makes a consumer uneasy, it is dealing with a company that has shown a repeated lack in response, lack of effort in attempting to get to know at least the right name of a potential customer, then offer a project estimate that is so drastically above the initial "rough estimate", without changing a single portion of the original measurements or product! My Husband and I both felt this was off to a bad start from the onset and can't decipher the last time we have felt victim to such a drastic and gross under-estimate for a simple remodel in a home project. What we would have been willing to splurge for the perfect elegant touch to our home at $20K is definitely not worth the thought at $31K! read more

The quote was provided quickly and was lower than the other. However, everything went wrong from there . 5 of the window grid were wrong, 3 screens were ripped, windows were all stacked against slider causing them to get a bit bent. windows were not installed to standards and I couldn't get the latch on one of the sliders to work. They also left caulking all over the Windows. Still waiting on the fix for the incorrect window and ripped screens for the passed 2 weeks. read more

We had a good experience with California Craftsman a few years ago on our patio doors and did not hesitate to contact them about our current window replacement project. No regrets. When we went over options with Doug, he gave us a range of options with clear pros and cons, answered our questions in the following days while we took our time to make up our minds, and then helped work out the little details related to installing new wood windows in an older home that had old aluminum windows. Discussions were honest and thoughtful and there was no attempt to oversell for our house. He made good suggestions for a couple of simple changes that reflected his experience and knowledge of the business. The windows were installed on schedule with quality craftsmanship.
