The Bus station in Stornoway is located across from an Lanntair next to the biggest car park in…read moretown. Here you can catch a bus to any part of the Island from the Tip of Lewis down to Harris. The station itself is relatively small compared to mainland stations but has plenty of seats for when you are waiting for your bus. It is open from about 9am until 6pm and there is a member of staff there at an information desk to help you find the correct bus and has timetables so you never miss a bus. Buses leave promptly so you shouldn't usually have too long a wait. The station itself is usually kept clean and tidy.

The Car Rental Hebrides desk is prominent by the doorway. The snack-bar area staff are friendly. The security staff took their jobs seriously. No complaints at all about Stornaway Airport. The Boatshed is associated with the Royal Hotel, and we had an awesome meal there. We called for reservation, and took the last spot available that day, so it's wise to plan ahead.

The sky was still faintly light and I could make out some of the land. Returning the following day, I took a road on the north side of the bay to the coast and watched the sun set. The sun moved slowly in the sky, a reminder that Scotland is at a high latitude. For viewing along the road, there was space along the road to pull over and watch the sun.

I've never taken a ferry from here (more's the pity!) but I visited Uig on a lovely sunny day and had a walk around the bay. The beach - the Ardroil Sands - is white and soft, the water clear and quite shallow even at high tide. If you walk southwards from here there are fine views looking back towards the harbour and the green hills behind. There are several inns, churches and small hotels dotted about.

With ferries leaving twice a day (weather permitting) and three times during summer, it is a good alternative to flying to reach the mainland. There is a dispute with their prices just now with people hoping they will reduce the costs. It is always advisable to buy your tickets before you travel as the ferry can be fully booked especially when the Celtic Festival is on. The staff are helpful and keep queuing to a minimum. The terminal has some seats whilst waiting to board but you don't usually wait long as they let you on as soon as they can.

It's always advisable to book your car on in advance as this guarantees a space as sometimes the car deck can be fully booked. The Ferry terminal is quite new and shaped like the old fish mart that used to be in the town during the big herring fishing. Staff are always friendly and helpful and though the prices seem fairly high, it's lots cheaper than flying though it takes longer! The ferry itself has recently been refurbished and has an observation lounge with a large seating area or reclining chairs, a tv lounge with small soft play area, a wee cafe upstairs and a large cafeteria downstairs, though prices are expensive. There's also a bar and an area for keeping your pets. Toilets are kept clean. It's always advisable to check online to make sure the weather hasn't disrupted sailings, especially in the winter months. To avoid you getting stuck.
