This is where my skin lost its virginity and I have no regrets. I had been wanting a tattoo for years but had been waiting for the "perfect conditions" for it to happen. My coworker and I were in SA for a conference and she really wanted to get a tattoo while we were there so of course I tagged along thinking it was time for me to get mine as well. We did some research and this one was the closest shop to our hotel. Thankfully it was also one of the highest rated ones so we felt comfortable checking it out. We called ahead trying to get more information in case we needed to make an appointment. The guy on the phone was very helpful, said we didn't need one if it was something small, their minimum is $60, and informed us it was cash only but there was an ATM on site. Once we made it there, Leo and Francisco greeted us as we came in. Francisco gave us all the forms to sign and asked what we wanted. They took our id's to make a copy and got to work on the sketches. Leo took care of my coworkers first. She wanted the word 'worthy' on her arm in cursive. Leo sketched different styles and sizes and she picked the one she liked the most. It probably took him less than 20 minutes. The place is clean and organized. We felt very comfortable there. Then it was my turn. I was very nervous about how much it would hurt since it was my first tattoo. Francisco was very patient and helped calm me down! I wanted two tattoos: a lotus flower behind my ear and a cactus on my leg. He suggested to start with the leg one so I could see what the pain felt like. This was definitely a great idea! The sketches he did were literally perfect. Exactly what I wanted! I was very impressed. I sat down with my leg stretched out on the bed and he got to work. His attention to detail was very impressive. I am grateful he took his time to make it perfect. Then he had me straddle a chair with my head resting on the side to do the flower behind my ear. This worked since I was afraid of moving while he did it. It wasn't as painful as I thought and he was done super quick! They give you a small paper with care instructions which is super helpful for those of us that are forgetful. The end product was awesome! Check out the pics I posted. We are super happy with our tattoos and absolutely love it. Will definitely pay a visit once we're back!

Was here for a work conference and on a whim, after researching reviews first, I dropped in Calaveras to get a tattoo. Dev was amazing! From the moment we walked in- friendly faces, good conversation- awesome shop! Dev was quick and had a "gentle hand"! Hands done- best tattoo experience I've had to date! A tattoo artist named Carlos Torres charged me a deposit and then stole my deposit while working for Calaveras Tattoos. Carlos was very responsive at the beginning but once he got my money started being flakey. It was the day before my appointment and I still didn't have a sketch or hadn't heard from him. I called Calaveras Tattoos and spoke to the manager Jackie as well as the owner and was told that he recently stopped working there and had done this to other people before he left. I request my money back from the tattoo artist as well as the shop who should be responsible for its artist and nobody will refund me. It mom sucks because this was going to be my fist tattoo and it was a horrible experience, getting scammed like this. Hope everyone sees this so that nobody else gets their money stolen.

Francisco did an AMAZING job on our tattoos! My wife and I got matching tattoos. Before we found Calavera's tattoo shop, we checked the reviews and work of all the ones in the San Antonio area. We LOVED the work this place did. Francisco was confident, informative and very detailed in his work. He did great with my skin, which is a darker tan, and obviously great on my wife's skin, she's Caucasian. The tattoos came out looking identical and full of color! The experience was great and I LOVE our tattoos!! They're healing up very nicely. I'm definitely going back to Francisco.

Trash. Don't get me wrong, I like to be optimistic and look for the good in things but this is by far the worst tattoo experience I've ever had. Let me start with the pros: clean i guess, cool shop, that's it. Came in with a friend for some walkins of a simple design..like so simple there's no way you could possibly mess it up...the color is splotchy, the pupil is SO small it's not proportional to the rest of it...and was asked to make it bigger since it was in color (which aight I understand so the color stays well and what not, but I guess I've just had more experienced artists in the past that did some complex detailed work) If you know what the evil eye looks like or el mal de ojo, there's a pretty standard way it looks...we showed an example and they essentially didn't take any of it into consideration, just started off wanting to give us circles and didn't even know it was supposed to be in color...??? When I finally asked my artists to confirm the design he wasn't even aware of what it was supposedly to look like...and then the two artists were confused when it came to the design..??? How do you not remember what a design looks like even after I showed you 30 seconds ago, it's not like it's a complex design??? Also, one of the artists just spent part of the time subtly flirting with my friend (unprofessional but we appreciate the laugh). Would never return, definitely do plan on going to get this retouched and fixed without a doubt. Lesson learned, NEVER cheat on your tattoo guy/lady. If you want a better option, try Voodoo Tattoos in San Antonio: so much more professional and will not BOTCH you. Honestly the only reason I didn't ask him to fix it on the spot was because it's was by far the most painful one I've gotten and I was just trying to find the will of god to not be rude even tho I was extremely irritated, gave that mans a 25% tip and called it a day even tho I should've just left without paying. Honestly, a flunking art student could give better quality than this. If you go, have an artist set in mind because their "rotating artists" ARE HORRIBLE. The minute they take you to the very back room, run for your life. Quality over quantity! Honestly if y'all want to ignore my review and think I'm hating go for it but I'm pretty sure the pictures speak for themselves without a doubt...he literally went out of the lines on my friend...TRASH

Rick did an awesome job touching up an old tattoo and designing a new one to honor my daughter. He was professional, knowledgeable, and did an awesome job. The shop is close to downtown and it was reasonably priced. I am really happy with my tattoo!

Awesome shop! Wife and I were walk ins on a Saturday night. Dave and Able got to work right away discussing and drawing up what we wanted. Dave did the one in the photos. Very pleased with the work and detail. Will be a repeat customer. Wife is a happy customer as well.

He takes his time with design and makes sure to check with you every step of the way. He is very laid back but also very professional. I wouldn't trust anyone else in San Antonio to tattoo me. Can't wait to finish my current tattoo!

I received a tattoo at Calavera's 5 weeks ago. After it healed I noticed there was still blue around it that I thought was bruising. I live in another state so I couldn't go back to the shop to show my concern. I have sent 3 photos over a 3 week period asking for advice and have not gotten any replies. I am disappointed in the result and also in their service.

Smoothie service. Easy going crew that wants to make you happy. Amazing price for the quality of work. The vibe in the shop was so chill I didn't want to leave. I like that the vibe is creative and showing various elements of art with its own twist. What I liked was that they attended me and was willing to find the right artist for my service requested. Which was very cool. They really wanted to see me happy. read more

Ok they these people are so cool and so nice. I met the manager Erika and she was super sweet and welcoming. I was super nervous finding a new tattoo place. Sarah did my tattoo and it was so easy. I told her my ideas and she drew it up with a few references. Great quality and pricing. I would strongly recommend. The entire time was a fun experience. read more

We were In San Antonio for a few days and decided to get tattoos. I found this place thru yelp and we decided to go here. It's also because it was closer to our hotel and it was freezing out. I knew what I wanted, but my friend didn't really care. My tattoo artist was Sarah and she was amazing. She knew her lines and the details showed on my tattoo. We did walk in quite late on a Thursday night, but she took me. Surprisingly, it didn't hurt at all, considering it's only my third tattoo ever!! My friend's tattoo came out really good as well. They have an ATM on-site, which was convenient. I love the tattoo shop vibe and would go back here if I'm in the area. However, after we both got our tattoos, we didn't receive any aftercare from both artists. That was weird, considering COVID and because they did such a great job wiping the tables down during preparation. Maybe it was just late, but simple aftercare would've been good. read more

Friends and I went on a day trip to San Antonio. We decided to get last minute tattoos. We saw that this place had great reviews! We did do a walk in, which wasn't a problem at all. It didn't take long to everything set up. I do HIGHLY recommend this place if you are getting spontaneous last minute tattoos. Crystal did my tattoo which turned out amazing!! Great line work, she was also very understanding about my twitchy arm!!! This shop is super clean, really freaking chill and really friendly. I really do recommend this place. read more

Just got done getting a tattoo from Trent and he blew me out of the water. He did an amazing job. I definitely recommend you getting a tattoo from Trent he is legit. I'm working on sleeve and I will definitely go back and get some more ink from him. I had a great time getting this tattoo. Trent is the man! I'm not sure if I can post a picture I'm new to yelp but I just made this review because the man deserves all the credit. I recommend getting ink from him before he gets Famous and takes forever to get ink from him. I am a very happy costumer. read more

Well My family and I are on a road trip and decided that we wanted to do something to remember San Antonio. Calavera's was the first to pop up and I'm glad it did. The customer service was great. Crystal did my tattoo and made sure that the four of us were all taken care of. The Place is very clean and very friendly. I am surprised that we were accommodated as fast as we were. There is a parking lot right next to the shop and the bus stops at the corner so this place was very accessible. Being from New York and having a tattoo guy I was slightly nervous of the experience that I was going to have. I was pleasantly surprised when Crystal made me feel like I have been going there for years. She made me feel extremely comfortable and did an amazing job. If I am ever in San Antonio ever again ill make sure to stop by and get another tattoo from her. read more

I go to Calaveras to get my work done with Justin Martinez. He is hands down, my favorite tattoo artist locally. He's professional, super nice, punctual and doesn't make you feel stupid about your tattoo ideas (as some other pompous tattoo artists can). His work is amazing and I ALWAYS, ALWAYS get compliments about all of the work he has done for me. The shop itself is VERY CLEAN, super cool and the staff is very knowledgeable. I recommend all my friends and clients to Justin and to this shop, if they are looking for quality work without outrageous overhead prices. I will probably never be tattooed by anyone else here in SA besides Justin and one other artist whose work I admire. read more

So I just got an arm piece here and it was amazing!!! I was able to call and tell them what I wanted and very shortly, Cardee sent me a text message wanting to work on my custom tattoo! Cardee was so on top of it, so helpful, and the tattoo y'all..... ITS FREAKIN AMAZING!!! Cardee is so great! I even had to reschedule twice and she was totally kool with it. What's also kool is that she actually kept up a conversation the entire time (we were there for three hours) this really added to the whole experience. Other places I've been they don't even care to learn my name. Needless to say, this was an awesome experience and I got an amazing tattoo out of it. I will definitely be going back and my husband will be getting his there too. read more

I agree with another poster on here that this place is a hit or miss. I have had three tattoos done here; the first two were small and done by Crystal who was amazing! However, one of their newer artist took some liberty freedom that made a simple idea into a mess, with the text being crooked. Out on vacation my group decided be spontaneous and get tattoos. We found this spot based on reviews. Walk-ins are welcome and its a cash only place. The staff were great and accommodating. Had such an amazing experience here! The shop itself is very cool, and the artists are very talented and awesome people. I came in initially to get a small tattoo with my friend, which was done beautifully and quickly for both of us. I saw a design on the wall by my artist, J.Pool, and got it done right after! My wife and I went here on a whim to see if we could get some ideas for a matching tattoo. Gerry and Cardee took care of us. They drew a custom design just for us and it exceeded our expectations. Ok, I will make this short and sweet, just like my visit here. Hector fit me in on a whim to get some ink. It was to celebrate my son's graduation from high school. He had a great hand, professional demaenor, and was much more personable than almost any tattoo artist I've ever had. (And I've had a bunch) The lobby is nice, comfortable, and I will be going back for my next piece. Hidden gem on the edge of The King Williams District. S*#t, go in there just for the artwork on the walls. That alone is very impressive. read more

This place is a hit or miss. I've been tattooed by Dave 3 times. The first one was great! However, the other 2, not so great at all. I think he is a mood artist. He did some work on my boyfriend and when allowed to do his own thing it looked really good. read more

I just got my first tattoos done and I must say it was a wonderful experience. I got mine done by a guy named hector and he is very kind and patient. I was very nervous and scared and he calmed me down and walked me thru it. I am very happy with them and I will be coming back for my future tattoos. read more

Best tattoo shop in San Antonio! Gotten my tattoos done by different artists there & they are sickk. The shop is amazing it has a good vibe and you can instantly feel it when you walk in. Established in 2005.

Calaveras opened with only three artists and now have a staff of seven with both male and female artists with more than 30 years of combined experience in the art of tattooing. Our goal is to provide our locals and tourists with the same knowledgeable friendly service that they can count on. We provide custom work and are willing to collaborate with our clients to provide them with top-of-the-line artwork, while striving to ensure a safe and sterile environment that will keep our friendships fresh for years to come. We are located in the historical Art District of Southtown near downtown, a block away from Hemisphere and within walking distance from the River Walk and River Center Mall. We are open seven days a week from 1pm to 9pm (though on Sundays we close our doors at 5pm). So stop by and see what we can do for you. We'd love to work with you to design your next piece of art.

I'm not only the owner but I'm also an Artist at Calaveras Custom Tattoos. Born and raised on the south-side of San Antonio Texas. I've always had a taste for the dark and unconventional and have made it into my life's work. It's an amazing feeling to share my love for art and make it a part of another person's life.

Her work is fantastic. She's really very knowledgeable and knows a lot about the different layers of skin and how tattoo art works with them. She takes an advanced approach, using tablet technology to layer the design perfectly and understands how the skin heals and responds. This also makes the process less painful. I used to use lidocaine when I get work done at home in Massachusetts. However I did not bring any on my work trip, and it hurt less with her than anyone else(even when I forgot my lidocaine) The tattoos came out even better than I expected, and people always compliment them. The other staff there are friendly too, and it's a relaxed, welcoming environment. I'm from Massachusetts and plan to fly back just to get more done by her. (Probably a big piece) If you're thinking about getting a tattoo done, Especially if it deals with Math or Physics. I'd definitely recommend making an appointment ahead of time and bringing a design idea. I like how she is very into what she does and not rushing to get the work perfect. Nycole's the best at what she does.

My cousin, sister and myself wanted to get a matching letter tattoo, so we had called prior (Saturday) to ask if we needed to have an appointment for Sunday. We were told that Sundays were slow, so we didn't need to make an appointment and to just come in. We did just that and had to wait outside since we got there a little early. We went in when it opened and the person inside told us that we needed to have an appointment (which we were the only ones there). He said that he would be the only artist in an that he didn't have time for us. (Don't have walk-ins welcome on the door maybe?) We let him know that we only wanted small letters and replied to us by he would NOT make time for us only his appointments. So we took our business to Doomsday Tattoo who had time for us. read more

If it were possible to give this location a Zero or a -5 Review it would get it from me. I am an experienced person with tats and my son decided to get his first while he is stationed in San Antonio. For me to say the artist was a 5th Grade C average art student would be insulting 5th Grade C average art students. Nothing on the tat looks like quality work and i will be pushing my son for a cover-up as soon as I can. Ridiculous to send someone out the door with such amateurish work. As soon as I can get the artist name from him I'll be doing additional outreaches directly to them. I've had bad experiences in the past. They were all very friendly! Francisco and Erika are absolutely amazing she touched my horrible tattoo and made it beautiful. And Francisco put a new tattoo on me he was very nice and made conversation to ease my nerves. My friend came in as well desperately needing a touch up on a small rose that was unrecognizable. Moses took care of her, she was super nervous and Moses made her feel more comfortable with jokes and his speed. We were out within 30 minutes of getting a new tattoo and a touch up.
