Pollos El Gallo had good reviews, so I was hoping I'd found another winner. The restaurant is surprisingly large and was clean, although the decor was a little too heavy on the red for my taste. There's also a nice-looking bar area. At around 4 PM on a Friday, I was literally the only person dining inside, although there appeared to be some takeout business. Despite being empty, service got off to a strange start. Two young employees were engrossed in their phones--one near the entrance and another at the bar--and another employee was also sitting off to the side looking at his phone. I stood there for several minutes before being acknowledged and seated, then waited about another five minutes before someone came over to take my order. I ordered chips and salsa along with a half chicken. The chips had a great texture but were a little too salty. Rather than salsa being brought out in bowls, I was given two Styrofoam bowls and bottles of the two sauces to dispense myself. Both sauces were good. The half chicken arrived hot with a foil-wrapped onion and corn tortillas. The chicken itself had good grilled flavor, but the portion seemed noticeably smaller than what I've received at similar restaurants. I was also surprised to find the spine included as part of my half chicken, which isn't something I expected to be served as part of the portion. The sides didn't help. The charro beans were very runny, and the rice had little flavor beyond some tomato color. There were some positives--the restaurant was clean, both sauces were good, and the chicken was served hot with good flavor. Unfortunately, the inattentive start to the meal, small chicken portion, questionable cut, and disappointing sides made the overall experience subpar. I've been to several grilled-chicken places recently that I'd choose before returning here.

She told us to ask the night bartender as she was about to leave (not sure why that was important and she was there another 15 minutes before relief arrived), but we had almost an hour so we got our drinks and sat down. After shift change we ordered round two and asked for the outdoor TV as instructed, but in the meantime someone had asked for the basketball game so we got a TV near us in the bar. There is a sports bar here called Seguin Schoolyard (opened in 2024). However, the entire grounds are also known as the Seguin Schoolyard as they are an extension of the bar.
