Paid less than $25 for two whole regular chickens that came out to about 12 pounds total. I used these chickens for yakitori skewers. Parking was ample and they are open on 4th if July until 3pm, but they typically close at 4pm. I was in and out within 5 minutes. read more

CAL (Chinese American Live) is home of Vikon chicken in Los Angeles. I mean, not literally, since the chickens are grown in Azusa... At the Rosemead location is the slaughter house and B&M retail store. It is the freshest place to get Vikon chicken. While the Westside folks have their precious (and seriously tasty) Jidori, those starting at 2% can easily afford the $2.50/lb price of fresh "walking", ie, free-range, Vikon chicken. Sales prices of Vikon at Ranch 99 or 168 may be cheaper ($1.99/pound), but you can specify if you want a large/small chicken, and the CAL folks will pick it out for you. Also, at the location, are various types of duck, goose, and quail, all available fresh, unfrozen. My husband has been buying chicken here after I had a baby. Just a couple of days ago he bought a chicken and some chicken wings. I looked the chicken wings and they were near bad already. They're so chewy and sticks to the teeth. While I was preparing them I already noticed they look gross. Then the chicken, there was white dots on the chicken, like those diseased animals. Gross! Won't be coming back here again. They probably give my husband the shitty ones because he looks young and look like he doesn't know anything. They do stuff like that. Went in to get a female chicken. Asked for a female chicken & got a really large male one. When I asked the guy he was like "o I'll get u a female one". Swapped it out and it was practically the same size. Either that is the biggest female chicken I ever seen or it's been genetically modified to get to that size. the stench that I so vividly recall from my childhood has markedly improved! Go for the yellow feather chicken. It's not the advertised "healthy" Viken chicken, but it has richer chicken flavor and even though its pretty lean, it's very tender! I like to just steam it with some ginger, cilantro, and garlic and the natural chicken flavors carry the dish very well. It's probably 2x the price of a whole chicken from Costco, but once you eat it, you'll understand why. It's FRESH, DELICIOUS, TENDER, yet LEAN at the same time! BE CAREFUL OF THIS PLACE!!! The chicken may be fresh but you may not get the whole thing. I just bought a brown chicken from there and asked them to cut it into small pieces for me. When I got home I found both middle wings and a drum stick missing (can't tell if any other pieces were missing also). The same thing happened to my wife a week ago when she bought a chicken from there and one wing turned up missing. When we called to complain, the guy answered the phone said the employee who cut the chicken "must have made a mistake."
