I have been dying to try this restaurant but I was very bummed by the result. I ordered takeout - the Cairo's Feast, side of hummus, and pita bread. The "feast" - the rice was absolutely fabulous and would eat that again and again. However the meal contained *very* little meat and was almost all rice. It was also missing some falafel and contained only one rather than the pictured 3. The meat itself (both beef and chicken) was flavorful, well-seasoned and had good texture but such a tiny, tiny amount for the price. The one falafel it came with was ok in flavor but was mostly soggy from being smothered in the garlic sauce which was both unexpected and undesirable. The hummus tasted fine but was pure liquid which I am not used to. The pita was fine, neither was it good or bad. I rarely review unless I'm blown away or super disappointed. 3 stars because the rice and meat had good flavor - but the execution was terrible and the outcome was super disappointing for the price. Overall not a good experience and I won't be back. Too bad, I was so excited for this place. read more

Cairo's kitchen was recommended to us by the hotel staff when we were in Kalamazoo for a work conference. It's in the downtown area, the place is run by a family. I can see how one would make this their regular lunch spot for takeout if you work nearby. The falafel was delicious, I will say they probably forgot to give tahini sauce or something to go with the falafel as it was a bit dry (But delicious). The mint drink and mango drink were so good! I really wanted to love this food. I was visiting Kalamazoo on business and this was my first night in the city. I wanted to find some good vegan ethnic cuisine within walking distance from my hotel. Cairo's kitchen fit the bill. It's a small space with dine in or takeout. It's counter service, very casual, clean, well light and the dining space seats maybe 20 people. The two young ladies working the counter and kitchen were very pleasant. I waited longer than expected for my food, but I was fine with that knowing that everything was being made fresh and they were busy filling to go orders. I ordered the hummus with chips and a falafel wrap by itself, no french fries. The hummus was liquidity and dense not the usual fluffy and light texture. The chips were fried pieces of sandwich wraps with a sporadic, dusting of za'atar spice. There was plenty of hummus and chips for the price, I was just disappointed what is the texture. My falafel sandwich also was made with the sandwich wrap that was fried for the hummus chips. I would have rather had an authentic Egyptian bread wrap. The falafels were crispy on the outside yet extremely dense on the inside. Sadly, they had the consistency of wet Play-Doh. There was a small amount of lettuce, tomato, and a good amount of garlic sauce. They could stand to increase the amount of lettuce and tomato. The sandwich was a good size for the price. However, again I was extremely disappointed in the falafel texture. I visited the restaurant's website and read their mission statement. I truly believe that the concept of this restaurant and there it's owners have all intentions of delivering on their mission statement. My experience, however, was that they have fallen short of that, at least on this day. If I'm in town again, I might give Cairo's another try however I'm doubtful it would be my first choice. Heard only good things about this restaurant so was super excited to try it, sadly literally every part of the experience was terrible. The young lady at the counter was pretty rude, the restaurant was dirty, and the food was terrible. For the price I expected at least SOME of the food to be made in store but it's very clearly all frozen. Even the soda was terrible (I don't know how you can mess up with a fountain machine) If you want to pay $40 for terrible, school cafeteria quality food, walk a couple blocks down to the hospital instead. At least the staff there are friendly. Edit: I would just like to add that the staff apparently lied about their meat being halal! I called before we arrived and also asked twice as we ordered. Both staff members said the meat was halal but it's not. Would really appreciate the staff being properly informed. We went here for the grand opening today. The vibes are very nice and elegant. The food is inexpensive and portions are excellent. We were given a complimentary sweet Qatayf . Which is a fried pancakes filled with coconut and nuts. Very delicious. I might come here every once and a while to pick some of thier qatayf . I rate it 10/10 The cairo feast consist of Falafel, beef and chicken shawarma, and yellow rice. This dish is the most expensive one in the menu $16 but it worth it. It has almost every thing you would like to try . I like it. I rate it 10/10 The Alexandria fish sandwich is My FAVORITE thing here !! I loved every bite. Basically it is a Fried fish with special sauce and veggies. Yummmmy. I rate it 12/10 The kushari was good and spiced very well. It contained mac , lentil, rice , fried onions and tomatoes sauce. This was my first experience trying Egyptian fare - I'm so glad I did! A work meeting offered this opportunity and I took the recommendation of having the Fatta Shawarma Entree with beef - the rice was full of flavor, the beef strips were tender, and the garlic sauce just made the dish - even better the pita chips were lightly crumbled on top. I sampled the Falafel - it's pressed down and a great addition. Honestly the true star is the pita chips - seasoned with Za'atar (dried oregano, thyme, cumin, and sumac) - I could have devoured the entire dish. So excited to try Cairo's Kitchen as a reward following my kiddo's research report on Egypt! We came to K-zoo for an event and made time to eat here beforehand. First things- the restaurant's Michigan Ave address is a little deceiving. It's located at the corner of W Michigan and S Rose, but the entrance is on Rose near the alley. It took a little time (and a walk through the Exchange Building) to find it! The interior is clean, modern, and has about half a dozen tables and a few counter seats inside, with a few tables on the street. On a Friday at about 6 pm, the staff was very busy with multiple dine in and carryout orders. The menu is varied but not extensive: basically there are variations of shawarma and falafel, staples at many local Middle Eastern restaurants. The more Egypt-specific items are the Koshary and Alexandria Fried Fish, so we ordered those, which came with Salata Baladi, as well as Cairo's Fries and some garlic sauce. Our wait for food was under the quoted 20 minutes. The koshary (Egypt's national dish) tasted good and it is very much an 'everything but the kitchen sink' comfort food. The added beef was very flavorful but disappointingly gristly and fatty. The Alexandria Fried Fish was really delicious, especially with the accompanying rice and cabbage slaw. I suspect that chickpea flour may be part of the fish breading, which I loved but my dining companion did not due to the texture. The Cairo's fries were good, though not remarkably different than most seasoned fries and not worth the price paid for the portion received. Finally, the Salata Baladi was so fresh and bright, chopped small and dressed with a spice blend that was unexpected and wonderfully savory. I would love to come back when we are in town again and sample some of their falafel and their shawarma. read more

I usually add protein to my Koshery and it runs me around $20 all together with tipping, a drink, and a small $0.50 side hummus and garlic. Had a delicious, good size falafel sandwich that truly slaked my hunger. Couldn't finish it all, so had tasty leftovers to take home. Reasons for four instead of five stars: 1) A cup of ordinary hot tea (one teabag in a paper cup, and you pour your own hot water) cost $3.71. I've not paid that much for plain hot tea anywhere I recall. 2) The place was physically COLD, not chilly, on a February Saturday afternoon, even while wearing my car length coat. Turn up the thermostat or *something* to make it tolerable to linger at a table, please. Granted, two walls are huge plate glass windows facing west and south, but it was an overcast day, so no sun to warm the place. Get the tea price below $3 and raise the temperature at least 10 degrees, and I'll be happy to give these folks 5 stars. read more

The Pepsi was off, something unusual in the flavor, plus I had to ask for it because it was forgotten. We've been very excited about Cairo's Kitchen opening up shop downtown! We were able to have a taste of their food during one of the Night-time Farmer's Markets and were very impressed. My husband and I split their mixed shwarma wrap combo with fries and a drink. Beef and chicken shwarma, cheese, grilled tomatoes, parsley and garlic sauce. Very savory and delicious! The fries were crisp and well seasoned, but not overly so. We asked for an extra side of hummus and tahini sauce to dip the fries in. Nice combination of crispy fries and sauces! They carry Pepsi products and have a water filtration system in place for those of us who get excited about that sort of thing. (My husband! He gave it a thumbs up!) From what I gathered they have a rotation of desserts that they prepare fresh daily. Today's dessert was RICE PUDDING!!! They top it off with your choice of Nutella or cookie batter spread and choice of nuts. (I chose both spreads and pistachio...YUM!) Their rice pudding was creamy and flavorful (they didn't truly have to put the spreads on, but I appreciated it!). The interior had plenty of tables (5 or 6? ) plus a counter facing Rose Ave to do some serious people watching. There are several options for outdoor seating with tables and benches right outside the restaurant. With Bronson park a mere couple skips away, one could easily impress their guests with a picnic in the park! Everything was clean as a whistle and the aesthetic was very pleasing to the eye. (Minimalist with lovely pictures of Egypt framed along the walls). Two non-gender bathrooms which were clean. All the employees were extremely pleasant and were very happy to explain things to you. I would walk by their tent at the Kalamazoo Farmer's Market and it would smell amazing. I work downtown and it was just a quick walk to their restaurant in the new Exchange building. They have some cafe tables on the sidewalk so you can eat in the shade with a lovely view of Bronson Park. I ordered the falafel wrap and it was incredible. Cairo's has a really cool location downtown in Kalamazoo across from Bronson Park. The food was really flavorful. I got the Fatta Shawarma mixed with chicken and beef. The flavors all worked really well together. The garlic yogurt sauce was yum and so were their fried pita chips on top. I could've used more meat to balance out how much rice there is.
