Yorktown Beach Hotel - Complimentary breakfast area on first floor

Stayed here for two nights with my kiddo in a Chesapeake balcony king room as a small "before…read moreschool starts mini-vacay." Front desk was friendly and texted when our room was ready to check-in, around 1:00pm, which was great. Our room and bathroom were clean (shower, toilet, sink), comfortable bed and pillows, great balcony view as advertised, and a TV, coffee maker, microwave, and fridge. These came in handy, as my little one is always hungry for snacks throughout the day, so we saved money on heating up some microwaveable Mac and cheese, pizza, chicken nuggets, etc. for lunches. Also, hot popcorn on the balcony at night was lovely. The pool and grounds are very pretty; think Magnolia trees, crepe Myrtles, wrought iron chairs and a gazebo. My little one enjoyed the pool both evenings before our awesome dinners at Yorktown Pub (a York County institution). Pool towels are available, too. We met the owners, who live on the property, and they couldn't have been more pleasant; very personable people. The complimentary breakfast was perfect for us, too. English muffins, bagels, pastries, fruit, cereal, yogurt, juice, milk, coffee, etc., exactly what we needed to start each day. The lobby is beautifully redone, and the owner said that's their vision for the rest of the hotel. I was a bit apprehensive reading some bad reviews, but it was exactly what we wanted and we had a great stay. I look forward to going back and seeing how the rest of the renovations turn out. Also, as the only hotel on the water there, their prices are totally fair. You can walk to everything, have a parking spot, and again, a beautiful view. Don't let the bad reviews fool you; it's a lovely hotel.

The hotel has been my regular go-to whenever I visit Yorktown, going on for about 10 years now. The amenities and the reasonable price make a difference. There's an indoor pool, a hot buffet breakfast included in the price of the room, there's wi-fi, a decent fitness center, and a functioning business center. Under Hilton's reservation system I was able to select my room the day before I arrived and was able to use Hilton's app to download the key to my room a couple of hours before the posted check-in time. The same thing was true when I checked out - tapped the app and my receipt was emailed to me within the hour. Nearby, there's a Burger King, and there's a Subway across the parking lot; there are also moderately priced restaurants and bars and a full-service grocery store and Virginia ABC store within a minute or two walking distance. I usually ride on Amtrak to get to Newport News from D.C., and the recently opened station is gorgeous. Lyft and Uber are well-supported, and I was able to schedule an early Sunday morning Lyft for about $25 for the 20-minute ride from the hotel to Amtrak (it costs less than that if you don't need to schedule in advance). Upon arriving at the hotel, I was recognized as a Diamond-tiered Hilton Honors member and offered snacks based on that status. The front desk staff members have consistently been welcoming, courteous, and helpful. I sampled the breakfast offerings, which included both oatmeal and grits, biscuits and gravy, and waffles, in addition to bagels, muffins, cereals, eggs, sausage, fruit, and yogurt. The breakfast staff members were friendly, kept the place clean and filled with all the fixings. My wife and kids have made the Hampton Inn Newport News-Yorktown our destination of choice; now our kids are bringing their young families there as well. Five stars for a job well done.

The building was quaint with each room tastefully decorated with cool and funny schoolhouse memoirs.  Well kept grounds included a pool, vegetable garden, vines and bicycles, with close proximity to local restaurants and shops.  We enjoyed the balcony for Schoolroom #4 every opportunity we had. The claw tub bath/shower provided a functional look into the past while the outdoor bath  provided a unique treat of showering under the stars. We ordered the wine and flowers package and were delightfully happy to see that the flowers were beautifully arranged in a vase in our room.  And the wine chilled upon arrival just begging to be enjoyed. Our gourmet breakfast was sparse but tasty with fresh squeezed OJ.  And dinner hosted by Chef Meseret was exquisite dining at its best.  She loves cooking and it's reflected in her dishes. .. every item was fresh and flavorful with the generous crab cake entree a show stopper.  It was all crab.. no fillers, just a bit of egg to hold it together. We had an enjoyable weekend and hope to explore the area more on another visit.

I went on my way and got in my car 30 seconds later I was exhausted by this gentleman who proceeded to tell me how inconsiderate it was of us to come to an establishment in the park in front of a business. I however, did not know that we were parked in a space that was not appropriate to, but more than that. I was shake it. He knocked on my car door and proceeded to berate me for parking in front of a business establishment. He said he hoped that I would come back. I'm not really sure what he meant by that nor would I ever come back to a place where I was scared in uncomfortable. I can't really say anything about what he served or anything he did, but I will reiterate that it was so inappropriate of him to knocked on my car door. It scared me to the point where I thought about it any hours in the day.

I feel so strongly about sharing my recommendation to stay here that this is my first-ever (and possibly only) Yelp review. The rooms, property, restaurant quality food, and service were impeccable. Sherry, Ridge, and Sara are so kind and will go above and beyond to ensure you have the best stay, even communicating months in advance to see if we had any requests. The unlimited ice cream and snack bars, speakeasy and all-seasons room were our favorite amenities, but the list is plentiful. Our room had a private patio with firepit, heated bathroom floors, a soaking tub, and so much more. It was beyond clean and comfortable! The icing on the cake: they are pet-friendly, and even provided organic dog treats to our corgi. We came in March for my birthday (they gave me flowers, a note, and a gift) and are already planning a trip back in the summer to utilize the heated pool, kayaks, bikes, and other outdoor activities. A must-see for a relaxing getaway or event, just a short drive to the charming town of Mathews. Thank you to our hosts for a fantastic weekend!

There is a vanity, a little pillow on my bed with two glasses and a bottle of Bailey's Irish cream. There is an upscale Nespresso machine complete with pods and creamers. There's a soaking tub and a shower and so many amenities. Room service comes not once, but twice a day. They open the blinds, refill amenities and put away things to tidy the room. In the evening, they put away the decorative pillows from the bed, fill the ice bucket and leave it out with a tray with new bottles of Saratoga water. They leave a small bottle of Baileys on a little pillow with two small glasses. They also close the drapes. I am so spoiled. I love this place!

The in-room customer amenities are especially disappointing. The colors and quality feel dated, and the toothbrushes are extremely poor--bristles came loose while brushing, which raises both quality and hygiene concerns. The bathrobes were rough, overly dried, and clearly shrunken, making them uncomfortable to use. The restaurant also misses the mark. Several dishes felt inexpensive in both ingredients and execution: over-salted hams, cheap syrups, and overall weak preparation. The service team is lovely--and trying--but the food simply isn't at the level expected for this price point. Concierge and front desk interactions were fine, but at this rate, I expect a more thoughtful, elevated experience across the board. With some investment in better amenities, higher-quality guest products, and improved culinary standards, this could be a truly special stay. My room was large, comfortable, and in a great location with easy walking access to town. I especially enjoyed dinner at Fat Canary--excellent food and service.

We are a middle aged couple, and sometimes when we have the kids with us we review from that perspective as well. So if you were using your Bonvoy points from your Chase or American Express card, I would recommend you stay at Fairfield, town place or Springhill suites over the courtyard. The courtyard doesn't provide free coffee or breakfast. This particular courtyard I was shocked they didn't even offer coffee when it was 20 degrees outside, instead they had ice water with lemons and limes cut up in the lobby... this location should really rethink that. No one wants ice water when it's 20 outside. The place did have a conjoined indoor outdoor heated pool, we did not use it but there were kids using it. The place and room was very clean, staff were ok, not super nice and welcoming like some please. They do seem to have issues with staffing the coffee/food area where you can purchase coffee and food (small sandwiches but nothing filling). They do have lots of green space for your service dog but are not per friendly. They have an excellent restaurant next door, called The Whaleing Company, great food but just know your gonna spend $20 average a person and kids menu was chicken nuggets, pbj, and hot dog type of food (def not Applebees kids menu IYKYK). The clam chowder was very good! They accommodated my request of a ground floor, but my standard Bonvoy request for the extra pillows, towels was not. So just know if your like us and have a standing request for when you book, they don't seem to look at this area. Check in and out was simple, and overall it was a nice stay. I hope they read the suggestions... free coffee or hot chocolate is a must in the northern region during the winter.

Upon arrival, we were told that the mobile key feature wasn't working and hadn't been for over a month. We then go to our room and put our stuff down because we needed to run some quick errands before stores closed. Upon arriving back at the hotel I began to do my normal process of checking the bed etc. I found that there was what appeared to be either blood or someone had something cheesy in the inside comforter layer. Which meant either you didn't wash it or you need to just throw it away. Either way disgusting! We decided we would just sleep on top and call the front desk in the morning because we were too tired from traveling and running errands. The next morning we awake and decide we'll take my showers etc before calling down so we could be ready to meet up with family. To our surprise, there was hair in the tub and then when my husband cut the shower on, it began to back up like it was flooding. After taking a half shower, he called down and asked to change rooms. He was rudely told we couldn't because they were sold out and that it would have to wait. He then expressed that we were at the hotel for several days. Then the lady said she would send maintenance but we would have to wait. He told her that was unacceptable and when he asked for a manager, she then said it would be 20 mins. Maintenance showed up with a serious mean mug on his face like he was beyond irritated that he had to come and do some work in our room. After evaluating the situation, he stated he needed to grab additional tools and he came back and fixed the issue. Overall, I give this hotel a 1 out of 10 and only because zero isn't an option.
