There's seating at the bar, tables and booths inside; additional covered seating outside with plenty of heaters. Blankets would have been a nice touch We ate pumpkin curry soup and homemade pumpkin ravioli for one meal. It was amazingly delicious! The next meal was traditional Wienerschnitzel with German potato salad; another tasty meal. They do a great job with their beer which is brewed in house. They also have guests beers.

Service was ok, we ordered drinks after several minutes looking the menu over but staff (various servers) seem irritated that we needed time to decide. It's our first time so give us a break. Hubby ordered the BBQ ribs they were just ok no real flavor other than the sauce on which he thought might be Sweet Baby Ray's from the states. Our friends had the bratwurst & potato with eggs (actual name I don't remember but it was a special for the month of September) both were ok. The bratwurst was the hit of the night with everyone thinking it tasted the best. The potatoes with eggs were ok but serving size was too large for the person who ordered it preferring the size of the potato salad over the meal. The service was apparently during shift change because getting someone over to the table for more drinks was difficult (unless you apparently were at a locals table) so sitting for extra drinks didn't really happen. So we ate our meal & eventually got our check & left. Was it good? Yes. Would we have eaten here again? No

Getting to Nachtasyl (Night asylum) is awesome - descend the well-trodden stone steps and go…read morethrough a tunnel-like room replete with gaming table and pseudo-anarchist posters before you reach the doors of Nachtasyl. It kinda reminds me of trying to explain to people where the Graffiti Bar is in Philadelphia. You almost just have to know how to get there. Once you're finally in Nachtasyl, you settle in with your Czech beer and far from the trappings of haute civilization .... you plot the revolution. The smoke is thick, the beer goes down easily and the whole world seems ripe for changing. Then when you leave it's only a short walk to the shopping street Mariahilferstrasse and you are back in the consumerism of the 21st century and the revolution seems far away again. But your clothes still smell from the smoke of Nachtasyl and the revolution remains very much alive as you navigate the streets of Vienna. By the way, there is a Tagasyl (Day asylum) as well - directly next door but on the street level. It's also an atmospheric Czech hangout. Daytime just isn't night-time.

This place has a rich history, and you can feel it when you walk in the door. The tap beer selection was limited, but it was perfectly drawn. I would recommend ordering a half and half beer -- Dark Budvar & Pilsner Urquell. The night we visited we caught a live performance of a young choir who sang songs ranging from Ghostbusters to Rage Against the Machine. Very very cool. Crowd was a pleasant mix of all ages, and everyone was very friendly. Only downside was the overwhelmingly thick cigarette smoke.

The place itself is quite small with only 7 or 8 tables to choose from and a fair amount of space at the bar to stand but don't be fooled. There is an amazing selection of beers here. Sprawling over 5 pages and including many of my personal favourite beers there is so much to choose from. I didn't count but I imagine there must be over 150 different beers here. Wow! Table reservation is available and it seems to be a good idea if you are going with a group of friends as standing at the bar leaves not too much room to chat and converse. There is a separate smoking section which is very rare in Vienna and a plus for the non smokers out there. The service is a little slow because of the sheer volume of people and the smallness of the place. There were only two servers there when I was there and probably 50 or so people. But I must admit that they are very, very good. They are attentive and organised, knowledgable and focused on the job. Taking orders 4 or 5 tables in advance and then delivering is really a great skill and a pleasure to behold! There is a smallish snacks menu available and from what I saw was really pretty decent. It helps to soak up some of the beer with something to eat. And now to the main event, the beers: There a few beers on tap as well as a few Austrian pils and Weissbiers to choose from but the focus certainly is on Belgium beers. For such a small place the beer menu has a great representation of Belgium beer types. Lambics, Blondes, Dubbels, Tripels, Trappists, Dark Ales, IPAs and more are all to be found here. It really is worth the price of admission to have a great menu such as is to be found here. So if you like Belgium beers this is the place for you. "Op uw gezondheid!"
