I didn't realize there was 2-for-1 drinks (has to be the same cocktail) but what a nice surprise! The pub is appropriately shabby, with dark wood floors and booths with split open seats and sticky tables. Pretty buzzing for a Monday night. I ordered the Parma Violence: gin, violette liquor, lemon juice and gomme and it was smashing. Delicious and potent. Now the pizza (sigh). I ordered the passion amore: avo, capers, mint and aubergine as the veg pizza option was not part of the two for £12 (boo on them). My hubs got some meat pizza. They came relatively quickly and looked very nice. Mine had large chunks of avo sprinkled atop. But... Yet AGAIN in London, mediocre pizza itself. The dough base was probably my favourite part as it was thin and just chewy enough. But bland I sauce, bland taste. My husband said his was similar. I swear pizza in London just sucks compared to NY. All these reviews claiming how good the pizza is are so misinformed.

A friend of mine took me here the other day - he'd been raving about it for a while and I can now see why: they have their own micro-brewery here and it really adds a lot of charme to this place. What made me like this place even more, was the really nice and down-to-earth attitude of our waiter: he took time to walk us through the beers on offer, explaining each and one of them! My first pint was some ginger-flavoured beer, which I have to admit I wasn't quite a fan of. The next one - Hops & Mops - was much better - I particularly liked the name of this one. The food here is also quite nice. We've had the chicken wings, which came with blue-cheese dressing. (Note: 8 wings is plenty for two people!). As they have a changing menu, I'd recommend having a look at the specials During my visit I had grilled haloumi cheese on ptitim (Israeli couscous). They have board-games lying around, so you should come here with a few friends and hang out for a few hours!

You get all the necessities…read morefor both casual and committed drinker alike, fruit machines, heavy oak tables and even the unbalanced bar stools but that is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. This pub seems to have all the little extras that make a great pub. For a start the Juke Box (something which you really don't find in enough pubs) has an amazing array of songs, from the popular to the obscure allowing you to adjust the backing tracks to your night accordingly (although I did get some dirty looks when I put on 5 James bond themes in a row). The sofas (found to the rear of the bar) are incredibly comfortable and very easy to get enveloped by, I would recommend heading to the Highgate inn for these alone, the beer access is a plus. If that isn't for you there are plenty of normal seats and even the option to stand if you would like. In terms of drinks the array on offer is diverse (not ground breaking but certainly not dull). On occasion you may see the odd alcohol dispensing nick knack behind the bar (I once witnessed a bottle holster that caused a desperado bottle to float in mid air). Little props like a frog fountain that spews fog, 4-5 ft tall wooden horses and the occasional seal teddy hanging from the many abstract paintings create a hint of a quirky atmosphere without making that the theme of the pub. Should you feel the need to smoke you will be forced into the street but before you hit the pavement you can take refuge in the outside chairs complete with matching tables, not the best in the winter but better than having to dodge pedestrians. All in all this is a very under attended pub. The staff are helpful and polite, the locals and newcomers seem to get along well and the atmosphere is on par with most of the other pubs in Highgate (better than some).

The beer on offer was ok, my London pride was pretty good although nothing special but for me the appeal of this place is the ease of getting a seat compared to the Woodman, the fact inside it's like pubs used to be before they all became identikit carbon copies of one another selling overpriced dismal food and trying too hard to be the next big foodie destination.

My friends ordered some chips but actually received cheese and horseradish chips. This turned up to be an accidental upgrade which the staff later acknowledged and even apologised for (there was no need!) There is a sports TV at the back, which can easily be avoided at the front. On our last night in town we stopped in and was meet with laughter by Jarrod, Alaska, and Josh. Being the first in, the bar was empty giving us time to talk with the two. Josh ("co-boss") was super funny and friendly. And being from the States we had a nice chat about sports with Alaska! My husband enjoyed a shot of the The Few (rye whiskey) and I had a new drink of theirs called "what is a pisco?" Cute story about the bar.... It was once a public restroom just twenty years ago!And three years ago it was transformed into this amazing hole in the ground... Literally. The place was practically deserted, because we arrived at 3:30 on a Sunday, I suspect. I ordered the fish and chips and a Guinness, which I know is very cliche. I'm not going to say they were necessarily much better than other places in London, but they were about as good as the more touristy places I tried, but were also about half the price of fish and chips I had near Victoria station just a day earlier. If you're in Archway go here, try the music and a new beer. Watch the Duvel though... for a small bottle it's deceptively strong ;)
