Bar Clipper - Pay before pee? At first I thought this pay meter was for use of the public restrooms

After getting dinged for 4 euro, 6 euro, 8 euro table charges, finally a restaurant in Italy with…read moreno table charge! You see this restaurant the first thing you step off the boat on Lago Maggiore at Baveno, Italy, as it is right next to the ferry building. Waterfront restaurant serving pizza and Italian pasta dishes, besides the usual sandwiches and ice cream. Eating under the sun umbrellas, watching the ferries landing and passengers disembarking, all while enjoying the scenery of the deep blue waters of Italy's second largest lake, surrounded by mountains rising straight out of the waters. Get too close to the ferries and you will inhale the diesel engine fumes, coming out of the back. Came here twice for dinner, as the food was the least expensive we could find, at 6,7 or 8 euros per dish, and of average quality. Plastic tables and chairs, but at that price, who cares. First time had spaghetti bolognaise, with a healthy portion of ground beef, while the wife had the ravioli, a tourist favorite here. Second time had spaghetti, while the wife had eggplant parmigiana, I think. Both times ordered 4 euro sparkling water -hey they have to make money somehow! Final time here, sat next to a table of 4 French adults. Midway through our meal, two of them closest to us light up cigarettes, smoking up my hair and clothes. You are no longer in Sunnyvale buddy. It is what it is. Bathroom is on the other side of the adjacent ferry building, and surprise, is free to the public, complete with toilet paper and toilet seat, both of which can be occasionally missing in Italian public restrooms! Come here at night to eat in the summer, and the mosquitos will eat you for dinner!

Caffe Lago - View of the ferry passing by from our table on the water

After taking the tour of Palazzo Borroemo, we tried to stop for a snack at the palace cafe, but the…read morecustomer service there was lacking. Walked down to the water front where you have a variety of options. Caffe Lago is located past the ferry landing. A large, covered outdoor seating area is located directly on the water, with an inside located just across the walkway. You can get gelato 'to go' at the entrance, or have a seat, peruse the menu and get a gelato dessert delivered to your table. Our visit, although late in the afternoon, was for a light lunch. The menu includes a number of sandwiches. I went for the 'toast' of smoked salmon while my SO got a tuna sandwich; plus a beer and a glass of wine. It was a warm sunny day on our visit, and the breeze off the lake was wonderful. The ferry going by sometimes sent a whiff of diesel your way, but that was brief and infrequent. There are signs in the restaurant asking that you NOT feed the birds. They are cute little things, but boy are they aggressive! Not at all shy, a couple of birds came to rest on the ledge next to our lake side table to check out the situation as we sat. Next thing we know, they are hopping up onto the table looking for a treat. Being fans of German beer, the Augustiner was a very welcome surprise and being served in an official Augustiner mug really made my SO's day! Unfortunately, my glass of red wine was not a well received. It tasted like the wine bottle had been opened at least a day prior (most likely a bit longer) and was not at all enjoyable. Once the sandwiches arrived, the birds were up on the table hopping right up to the side of the plate. We had to keep our eyes on these little cuties. The smoked salmon toast is a huge sandwich (to me). The salmon was good quality, with soft cheese contrasting the dry toast, the cucumber refreshing, the tomato cool and juicy. A bit of the cheese spilled out of my sandwich onto the plate and as I used both hands to bring the sandwich to my mouth, a bird swooped under my arms, scooped up the cheese, and landed on the ledge to savor his victory! These birds are not kidding. The tuna is plain flaked tuna spread over a bed of 'gentle' lettuce on a nice soft sandwich roll, topped with tomato and finished with a bit of mayo. We both enjoyed our selections and were quite full when done. Customer service here is good. Location, right on the lake is also good. The food options are limited, and you may have to keep an eye on the feathered friends trying to join you for lunch, but all in all, I would recommend this 'fuori' location for the service and location.
