Another great experience at Le Petit Royal. I went for the Italian hot chocolate again but with chilli this time. Just as good as I remember but I think I prefer the ginger one. I struggle to find food in Zermatt that isn't very creamy/rich so it was nice to have a tuna baked potato with some salad. A great portion size too. The staff are always so friendly here and nice to see it was the same people working in the summer as it was last winter. read more

Stopped in to pick up some sweets while visiting Zermatt for the day. I got some Matterhorn shaped chocolates, chocolate dipped candied oranges, and a bag of shaved chocolate they said was for hot chocolate. Very expensive, but nice to try it. The chocolate doesn't dissolve that well in hot chocolate and it was hard to tell what some of the Matterhorn chocolate flavors were once I got them home. read more

We had walked around a lot of the village and needed a quick break for a sweet treat and some coffee. We sat at one of the two tables on the patio and had wonderful service. The desserts were delightful and the coffee was perfect. This is a great location either inside or outside to sit and people watch and enjoy the ambience. read more

Loved this coffee shop! Amazing coffee - got a flat white and a mocha (the homemade chocolate in the mocha was divine). They also have some food items and a few chocolate boxes for sale inside. It's small inside but there's seating upstairs as well and a bathroom downstairs. Sat here for hours just enjoying our coffee and conversation and not once did they pressure us to leave. I really wish we had tried this cafe earlier in our trip so we had more opportunities to come back. Everything we had was so delicious! This is the ONLY cafe in town that makes their own hot chocolate, and you can absolutely taste the difference. Their other cafe drinks are good too. The pastries are really good, served warm, and not too sweet. Even something as simple as pumpkin soup tasted uniquely delicious. The cafe's upstairs area is super cozy with windows to peer down into the street and a faux fireplace. The ladies who work here are also super pleasant. Recommend coming as many times as possible, I certainly regret not doing so! read more

MUST go while in Zermatt. OMG after the first sip of hot chocolate I wanted them to take all my money. When ppl say it's the best hot chocolate they've ever had in their life, they're not exaggerating. I think the waitress hated us though. Admittedly, one time we forgot to pay because you have to pay on your way out after dining in, and we thought we paid in the begging. They were nice about it the next time we went and we apologized and paid for it. I don't care if they hate me though, the drinks are so good I will endure any type of customer service. read more

We loved it so much we came back to back during our stay here. It has a warm and cozy atmosphere. The workers are kind, helpful and welcoming! I loved the budapest meringue (a hazelnut meringue with tangerines) - I've never had anything like it before and it was divine! I loved how the meringue and tangerine came together so harmoniously. The hot chocolate was perfect for the cold weather. The next morning, I had to try an avocado grilled focaccia and it was so good. The best focaccia I've ever had. I love coming here! It's quite small and becoming quite popular now once people started realizing where to find great coffee. You dont usually see tables reserved at coffee houses but this is now the case and good to know that it is an option. Know that for more than 4 people at a table it will be a tight fit and you should definitely make a reservation. The cheesecake alone is worth it and the service is always friendly. read more

We had wandered by Le Petit Royal last night after dinner, and since we were in need of a lunch spot the next day, we decided to swing by here after we finished up our hike this morning. Given it was nice in Zermatt at this point (it started pouring maybe 20-30 minutes after we had left), the few tables outside on the street were taken - so we sat at one of the couple that are next to the display window of baked goods. There were a couple menus by the entrance to read, and one of the ladies from behind the counter popped by to grab our order once we were ready. The food came out quite quickly (as did the hot chocolate), so we were not waiting for long at all. The drink menu is relatively extensive - hot chocolate may get most of the attention, but there are coffees, teas, and various alcohol-infused takes of the above. My wife's house dark hot chocolate was quite good, and my hazelnut 'hot chocolate' was at least fun to make - I got a tall glass of hot milk and stirred in 5 hazelnut truffles until they fully melted. It was a bit lighter than regular hot chocolate, but I liked the nutty flavor. The star of the show here, though, is the food, IMO. The serrano ham panini was absolutely delicious - served with a light pesto, arugula, tomatoes, mozzarella in a very light grilled focaccia, it was one of the best paninis, simple as it may be, that I have had anywhere. My wife's vegetable quiche was just as good; I was a bit skeptical given that it didn't sound as hearty, but the cheese (lightly stinky) combined with the egg and topped with freshly-cut tomatoes, cucumbers and topped with more arugula was perfect. You're not going to find much beyond the basics here, but to be honest, they are executed so well here that there really isn't anything to be displeased about. We didn't try any of the desserts (though they looked delicious), and I might come back one more time during our stay here in Zermatt - it was that good...and, frankly, from a pricing standpoint, it's one of the more affordable spots (relatively speaking) to eat lunch at! read more

The place is cute but the hot chocolate was super disappointing. We came here specifically for the hot cocoa after reading reviews on multiple sites. Supposedly it was made with cream and real chocolate at some point but that's certainly not the case for what we received. I'm not sure if things have changed since the last reviews were written or if the reviews are fake but either way I wouldn't come here and waste your money if you're hunting for good hot chocolate. read more

Wish I could give this place 6 stars! The owner was so nice and talked to us for quite a while. We were only in Zermatt three days and I went in here everyday because we loved it so much. The vegan flatbread was so delicious and we also got hot chocolate (they have soy milk as a dairy free option). Also got the vegan coconut yogurt and muesli on my way out and it also did not disappoint. Tucked in the middle of the main street of Zermatt, is a small cafe with - at most - 10 tables. We were cold, and were looking for some warm cup of chocolate to warm us up; what we got was nothing short of excellent. Hot Italian chocolate, (one with a dash of amaretto for the dad), moist carrot cakes, and a slice of chocolate coconut cake.
