Canoli and strawberry cake
Justin L.

Amazing cakes and desserts in a city known for their sweets. The south of Italy is known for their sweets, be it granita, canoli or cake. Spinnato has a long history, circa 1860, and is simply amazing. It was the first place I stopped when I arrived in Palermo and I must have picked up a snack here at three times in four days. There are two sections to Spinnato, the pastries side and the drinks/cafe side. There's a slight premium for dining in, but it's a nice break from the heat. My desserts of choice here are the canoli, and a torta de fragole (strawberry cake). They are both simply delightful! The cake was my absolute favorite... home made whipped, great Italian cake and fresh strawberries. On a hot day, I would also recommend one of their granitas. Made with fresh fruit! I believe they also send their pastries across the walkway to the coffee and chocolate place (though not 100% on this). The venue is on a pedestrian street, so it's fairly quiet with a great atmosphere. As with all well established venues, the workers take great pride in their jobs. So they will be dressed in suits, full aprons, etc... a definite plus to have people that love their jobs. If you're in Palermo, a definite MUST for any lover of sweets (and even those without a sweet tooth)!!!

Relaxing place to come in out of the bustling street scene and have a cafe and a lovely sweet.

Margarita Sicilian pizza (best I've ever had) and cappuccino

I visited Sicily with my friends in late October 2014. This was the only restaurant we ate at in Sicily, and I am very happy with our choice. We only had one day in Sicily, so we loved how we were able to have real Sicilian food without having to wait a long time at a sit down restaurant. I tried the Sicilian pizza (margarita, mushroom, and sausage). They were absolutely delicious, and they cut it for you! I also tried the elephant ear pastry. I had 4 for only 0.85 Euros, and it was extremely good. Sicily truly is the city of sweets! The manager was extremely kind as well. I struggled with connecting to the wifi, and he came back to check on our table to see if we had connected. The ordering process is confusing, but it is the ordering process of many places in Italy. You need to order with the food servers, pay at the cashier, take the receipt to the food served, and then take your food. Overall, delicious, worth its price, and great service Also, this is one of few places in Sicily that actually have free wifi without needing to register a credit card!

Palermo is the sweets center of Sicily and at Pasticceria Buscaglione you will discover why…read moreSicilians in their own right can brag about the amazing sweets produced on the island. But they don't. So I will for them. Opened in 1899 (!) dishin' out pastries for over 117 years, Pasticceria Buscaglione gave me and my posse a sampling of excellent Palermitano sweets. It's soo easy to love this sweets shoppe. First, they make a genius cassata and if you've never had this, try it here. A cassata is a dome shaped marzipan cake, ricotta (best in Sicily), enveloped in a marzipan fondant type covering, so delicious and with a coffee will send you to heaven faster than a tiramisu. This version is soo good, my group got them togo. That, in addition to the awesome hand painted marzipan fruit, wrapped nicely for presents to friends, you are treated to a unique experience: you almost don't want to eat them for fear of ruining Art. The mandorle (almond based cookies) were 2die4 as well. Come here for a quick dessert and coffee, after the Teatro Massimo and have an unforgetable espresso-- so good here also. The staff here are friendly and helpful. They speak a little English but the language of food is universal, no need to speak Italian, just point and smile. Hope you enjoy this place, it's a Yelp find. Ciao. Visits: a few Tip: Cassata, mandorle and marzipan fruit are their top buys. But this bakery has been around for centuries, that's how well respected this pasticceria is.
