I kept reading about this place in food blogs for legit espresso so I went to check it out while visiting the rough and gritty city of Napoli, Italy. It has a decidedly untouristy feel and on a busy Saturday afternoon it was jam packed to the brim with only locals (who all seemed to turn their heads in unison when we waltzed in, as if to ask "what in the HELL are YOU doing here?"). We ordered two caffès and, after having just spent a few days in Rome, we were shocked at how inexpensive these were (less than 1 Euro each). We both speak a little Italian so the language barrier was no problem. We took our receipt to the counter and plunked down a couple of small coins as a tip and the barista came right over and made our coffees. They preheat the espresso cups and I want to warn you that they are BLISTERING HOT. I didn't know this until I went to pick mine up and nearly dropped the cup out of sheer pain. Be careful before you put the cup to your lips or it could prove to be very excruciating. I had to let my cup cool off for several minutes before I could drink it and even then, the coffee was just way too hot for my throat. I adore the strongest of the strong coffee, a real Italian espresso that you can feel in your bones in two sips, but good lord the espresso I had at Caffe Mexico was one that proved too much for me to handle. I swear it put hair on my chest and my spoon would've been able to stand straight up in it. In fact, I triple dog dare you to go here and drink an espresso. This stuff is S-T-R-O-N-G and if you can down one of the espressos served here, then my hat's off to you! read more

What do I do? What do I do? What do I do? Easy, hombre. Let me guide you. Walk in and pay at the door. Order what you'd like. I recommend the espresso or cappuccino. Take your ticket to the bar and clunk down .10 cents as a tip. Watch the baristas work in unison. Bam. Drink from your free water to clear your taste buds for the caffeinated experience of your dreams. Ask for sugar in your espresso and BAM. Sip up. This coffee is meant to be finish in about two savoring gulps. BAM. Talk about a head change. Try not to jitter in your way to the metro. Caffe Mexico is a cafe that looks like a touristy franchise but it actually delivers quality cafes. I walked past several times before daring to walk in. The employees are relatively cheerful and they definitely don't make you feel like a loser for being new to the establishment. First rate coffee in this shop. We were served by Antonio, who knows our son and his infant daughter, and recognized my wife, who had visited several times on her last visit. I only had one coffee, so all I can comment about is the precise and rhythmic process of making the coffee. It was a sight to behold. This is foreign to me, but to everyone else, it is routine. If Starbucks baristas worked this fast, no store would need more than two. What a treat. Eat well, tip well. read more

Rick Steves told us to go. So we did. Across the street from the Piazza Dante, under a bright orange awning sits tiny little Caffè Mexico. Order like a local by paying first then taking your receipt to the counter where the baristas await to make your caffeinated dreams come true. Very fast and fascinating service. Tipping is a must here, and after one sip of your drink-you'll gladly overtip! No seats or tables here. I enjoyed drinking my caffe freddo con panna (1,70 Euros) at the counter as I watched more drinks made and contemplated ordering another. Iced coffee in Italy is basically slightly sweetened espresso, so much deliciousness in such a small quantity always leaves me wanting more! The best coffee (espresso) experience within the city. Many locations are scattered throughout Naples. CAUTION: These cups are HOT!! Take your time and strike a conversation with the baristo if you know any Italian, they will gladly speak with customers willing to better their conversational language skills. Also these shops can be located in some rougher areas of town so watch your pockets, but don't let this steer you away from a great cup of coffee. read more

This place has nothing to do with Mexico by the way. It's got a pretty unique interior and atmosphere. I liked it and their espresso was some of the best I had in Italy. I had 3 different variations on this visit. First a regular cafe, the second, was a slushy, and the third was espresso with a dollop of whipped cream. The slushy espresso stole the show though. A bit of a local-haunt-meets-tourist-trap, but a fun place to drop in for a good coffee. Unlike any other bar in Italy, they sort of expect you to leave a €0.10 "tip" when you put your ticket down on the counter. Even with the "tip," North Americans will be shocked -- in a good way -- to pay just a little over a euro for an espresso, so it's worth popping in for a break while exploring the city. read more

Ah, Caffe Mexico. Our haven of caffeine and morning wake-up in Naples. In the heart of downtown, and on the way to the water, through the piccola strada of bookshops from Piazza Bellini, you walk in and experience caffe the Napolitan way. Rick Steve's, in his endless suggestions of awesome places to experience, really got it right on this one. The staff is wonderful, the chocolate croissants to die for, and for non-coffee drinkers there is some really incredible the freddo (cold tea). I can just taste it all now, and hear the sounds, see the sights... wonderful for those few tourists who make it to the gem of Napoli in their Italian tours. read more
