Well they do say every day's a school day…read more We learned something we didn't know here; we both simultaneously thought that the milk in our coffees had turned (flat white & cappuccino £3 each) but the manager advises it's the complex quality of the exceptional coffee used, so next time it'll be espressos as milk doesn't add sweetness here and I avoid sugar. The manager offered to make fresh coffees and kindly explained about the quality of their coffee, supplied by Dark Woods Coffee and suggested this coffee ain't Costa - I do agree. My new coffee tasted identical to the original but my wife thought hers less 'sour'. Dark Woods provide the coffee and hand roast their beans on a 1950's Probat drum roaster. They are top notch on the environmental and social impact and certified B Corp - 5 green stars here. When tasting think terroir, varietals and process. I had the chestnut & wild mushrooms with garlic & herbs on organic sourdough supplied by an artisan maker. This dish was well balanced, delicious and a decent portion. My wife had the salmon bagel with cream cheese and scallions. She declared it delicious too (salmon delicately smoked by the Manchester Smoke House and bagel baked perfectly by the Bread Factory, Manchester). The sparkling water came well chilled and in a recyclable bottle. We were seated out back at a wobbly table that only required me putting my shoe on the base, the service was attentive, we were suitably distanced from other diners and they genuinely cared that we thought the milk in coffees was off. The place was spic & span clean and with their focus and transparency on quality organic food, preserving the environment (remember folks the earth is our only home) and relying on artisans for produce it's 5 green stars for them too. Really worth supporting.

I popped into Folk having gone down to Didsbury for a meeting and a change of scene and thinking it…read morewas time to actually do this on all fronts, I plumped for Folk having never actually been before (I know - it's been there forever!) First off I really liked the bar as it's a good, chilled out and welcoming sort of cafe bar. It's a bit like the Odd bars in that it's got random shizzle everywhere but it doesn't seem too over the top which is nice. There's a great selection of beers on tap and as well as all the usual standard crafts and lagers that you get nowadays, there's also a pretty sweet selection of local beers like Ticketybrew on tap. Alas I was driving and had a meeting so beer wasn't my thing on this occasion but I did plump for a tasty Moroccan lamb wrap with salad and flatbread (£9) to keep me going. It was quite nice but 3 days on I'm still unsure whether I enjoyed the taste of the lamb - it was a strange mix and I'm not certain the spice mix was quite right but I saw enough of the fresh ingredients on offer to go back and try more menu items another day - and of course stop for a pint!

Cafe bar with great interior and good food…read more Let's start this review with me saying I'm pretty biased about Folk - it was the location of my first 'date' with Dan. They were amazingly kind and on our first anniversary let me have a menu to put in with his present. It's one of my seriously happy places. They have booths at the back, a fair few tables round the bar and then a good sized outside space with seating too. The menu is good classic with a range of breakfast options served until 4pm. They also have sandwiches, a burger option, soup and a specials board. The food is freshly cooked and really good. Their bar is well stocked with great beers and spirits plus some excellent non alcoholic options their coffee is also fantastic. They also have a selection of cakes which is always changing, check out the blackboard for the options. Today they have sticky toffee, chai, honey & cinnamon, cookies & cream and berry crumble! Great relaxed atmosphere in the day and nice and lively in the evening this is a great place to try if you are in the area.

I absolutely ADORE Mama Bears Cakes & Bakes!!! I live in the US, and my boyfriend lives in the UK,…read moreand I wanted to send him something super special for our anniversary. After searching endlessly and fruitlessly for weeks online for someone who could make exactly what I wanted, accept payment internationally, and deliver it to my BF, I messaged Mama Bear's, and the owner is an absolute ANGEL. She worked with me to decide on exactly what to create. Even though the things I asked for aren't typically items that she makes, she told me that she was a "romantic" and would be happy to make a special order for me. She even ended up adding decorations on her own because she wanted to make it extra special! Such a lovely person to work with!!! Her husband hand-delivered the cake & chocolate-covered strawberries to my boyfriend on our anniversary and even passed along a special message. My boyfriend was totally surprised and absolutely impressed with the presentation of the gift itself. He also said that the cake and strawberries were incredibly DELICIOUS!!! He really tried to ration them out to last longer, but they were so good he couldn't help eating them within about a week and a half haha. Mama Bear is the greatest, and if you live in the area, you should DEFINITELY choose her shop! I'd be there for coffee and baked goods daily if I didn't live across the pond! haha.

Right. What is it about coffee shops that makes people moan about global capitalism? Eh? Why does…read moreeveryone do it? I know that multinationals and giant corporations dominating the market are bad for everyone. Its bad economically, its boring, its ruining livelihoods. I know all this. It's the dreadful world we live in and I'm well up for doing something about it, such as boycotting such places. But... Why does everyone make coffee shops the locus of their concern for the condition of the capitalist world? Its ridiculous. No one is standing outside KFC saying that they're ruining the livelihood and originality of all the independent fried chicken shops such as Kansas Fried Chicken and Krispy Fried Chicken are they? So why are people always on about coffee shops? Middle class people, drinking lots of coffee (instead of working) in an independent business and feeling good about it, then going next door to Boots without realising it's the same thing, and trotting of home feeling high and mighty. Woooooooooooooooooooo! Costa sells nice coffee, Boots sells nice plasters, KFC sells nice chicken.
