This cute coffee shop is located right next to the Gazebo Gardens on Shields, and it is super adorable. The interior is definitely maximalist, with plenty of framed photographs, stickers for sale, little trinkets, and plants hanging all around. There is no space to sit inside - to be honest there's barely any space to wait for your drink - but they have plenty of outdoor seating to soak in the garden vibes while sipping on your drink. I ordered the matcha latte with marshmallow cold foam and lucky charms (this was their seasonal one for March), and I grabbed the mocha with marshmallow cold foam for my sister (another seasonal drink). The matcha was decent, but it wasn't until after I got my drink that I noticed they have an option to do "ceremonial matcha" for an extra charge. Personally, I wish they would just charge the extra and do all ceremonial matcha, but that's just me - I love my matcha. I pass my here every day when I take my son to school. Today I decided to stop by and was pleasantly surprised. The place is really cute and tiny inside. So it's more of a to go spot. They did have 3 tables outside with chairs. I did see a heater above some customers so there is some warmth out there in the cold. The girl working behind the counter was really kind. I'm usually a chai kind of gal and the snowflake chai sounded enticing. The snowflake chai reminded of Christmas in a cup. I could smell the cinnamon which I love and tasted the vanilla. My friend and I found this place when we searched up nearby coffee shops. It definitely exceeded our expectations! It's a small little shop located besides a gorgeous garden nursery. While we waited ~5-7min for our orders, we were able to stroll through the nursery and look at all the different plants. The drink options are also affordable, especially compared to other artisan cafes and even Starbucks. I decided to try one of the seasonal menu options- coconut latte with vanilla cream, which was surprisingly refreshing for a coffee and slightly sweet, I loved it! My power went out unexpectedly this particular Saturday morning so making my own pumpkin coffee was out of the question. Instead of hitting up Starbucks, I decided to hit up this coffee shop that I remember seeing next to Gazebo Gardens a few weeks ago. We arrived at about 12:45pm. They close at 2:00pm, FYI. It is a tiny shop with room inside only for the ordering counter and a bar top table that has black coffee carafes and the straw dispenser and stir sticks etc. There is a tiny patio in-front of it with 3 tables. Luckily if the tables are full, you can just walk 10 feet away into Gazebo Gardens and enjoy plenty of patio seating around the nursery. They had fresh muffins, cookies and there was a single croissant left. MY Mom ordered a hot pumpkin pie latte and I got a large iced pumpkin pie latte. It was really good and it did taste like pumpkin pie, not overly flavored of pumpkin spice. It's in a nice spot where locals walk up to the shop and know the regulars. The coffee was so delicious! I had the Thai coffee and it wasn't too sweet and it was so flavorful. The coffee shop itself is small and cozy. Inside they also have other local item they sell. It was fun to look at all the different item. They were even selling locally made dog treats! There wasn't much seating at the cafe, they only had a handful of small tables on the front porch, none inside. Once I got my coffee, I actually walked around the plant shop next door instead. Well, how to say exactly -- It's very very SLOW, only myself and I other shopper who was looking in the garden area when I went into the coffee shop, nobody else there, just me and the barista. I am always a kind and polite person to interact with very mild personality. Granted all this and I was dressed in all grey workout clothes/baseball cap (added to my invisibility I suppose), after the payment which was fine (yes, I tip too) the lady said "I will bring it out to you" so i went back outside and sat at the patio tables -- 25 minutes later (after another person had gone in and left with their drink in hand within 2 minutes) I kindly opened the door and waited some more for an acknowledgement that I had been forgotten long ago -- not so much, just "here ya go" and was handed a drink that was not anything close to what I had ordered?? I just said "thank you" smiled and left baffled. If you are having ONE customer every 10-20 minutes one would think that would be very doable, no?? No tables to wait on, deadsville quiet, yet my order (an Iced Latte w Oatmilk and was given a Hot White Mocha w Cow Dairy that I can't even drink) and the reason for my tip (fast service) went completely SPACE CADET. Cafe Van Ness is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, coffee shops in our great city of Fresno. It checks all the boxes for me, which is great coffee and sweet ambiance! Located next to Gazebo Gardens, a local nursery, Cafe Van Ness' setting is just stunning, especially in the spring and summer! In the fall and winter, it's equally cozy-feeling. It is a cafe on the smaller side, but I regularly see big groups of folks catching up over a cup of coffee. Inside the coffee shop is a small selection of gifts where I've definitely treated myself to a nice smelling candle or two before! The coffee itself is amazing . They have regular coffee shop fare and specialty drinks named after local streets in the Fresno High area. The iced Brown is my go to, and sometimes if I'm feeling cheeky, I'll add in a croissant as well, which are typically sourced from La Boulangerie (a local bakery for the non-locals) and are fresh and delicious. Cafe Van Ness is a wonderful neighborhood spot. We are lucky enough to be able to walk there, and sometimes will take the time to stroll through the adjacent nursery. On weekends they have live music and food trucks. It's a wonderful little spot. And without a lot of tables or counterspace, or wifi, so THANKFULLY, you don't have to deal with 15 people sitting their with their laptop open and ear piece in taking up space for 3 hours with their small coffee in tow. Gazebo gardens is a beloved place to go for plants, or on weekends for food, drinks and a good time. I started to stop by the Cafe once I discovered they offered Equator coffees which is one of my faves. As of late, the coffee has been inconsistent. Today for example, the beans were burned as I could taste it immediately upon my first sip. It's a bummer when you're craving your fave coffee and it's sub par. I noticed a lot of turnover with their staff recently and perhaps that is to blame. They have a lot of sweet coffee drinks that people seem to love. I have sampled a couple and they are wayyy too sweet for me. They get pastries from La Bou and they are a bit pricey even when they're day old. Service and hospitality are always on point here and I just love the neighborhood feel. I will try the coffee again soon and hopefully it's done right. read more

Cafe Van Ness has become close to an obsession for me. My colleagues and I have frequented this local coffee shop three times this week and I'm so happy we found this spot. I'm admittedly a coffee junkie and have tried nearly every coffee shop in Fresno/Clovis but their Aztec Mocha is to die for! I don't like sweet coffee but want a little flavor and this coffee nails it. Furthermore their prices are very reasonable, there really is no reason to pay for overpriced national chain coffee. They open early enough for a coffee run before getting to the office and I love how they name their specialty concoctions after local streets. Get out there and try this local gem! It is right next to Gazebo Gardens which is very nice. The drink was made quickly and handed to me along with well wishes for a good day! The drink was okay. Not very hot and not a favorite, but the place seems popular. They probably have better drinks to have. Great service and okay drink. I have been here twice within the last two weeks and have loved both my visits! They have delicious coffee here and I love the outdoor seating available in the garden area of Gazebo Gardens. Not only do they offer delicious coffees but they also have pastries available from La Boulangerie. On both of my visits, I tried their specialty coffees iced. The drinks are made well and just the right amount of sweetness. The customer service here is also very friendly. I can see myself coming here often as the weather warms up. On a morning walk with the dogs, we decided to stop by Cafe VanNess. We just bought our home in Tower district last year and love walking the dogs down VanNess. We love the shaded street and we love the beautiful historic homes with beautiful windows, porches, terraces and courtyards. Definitely a goal for us to buy a home on this street one day. Along with these homes are great local coffee shops like Kuppa Joy and Cafe VanNess. I love that Cafe VanNess is an extension of Gazebo Gardens, the most beautiful nursery in Fresno. It has the cutest interior. Their gift card is uber adorable and personalized and I love that they named their coffee after the streets that are perpendicular to VanNess. The barista was very friendly. My husband got a green tea with lemon and I got the Princeton which is coffee with chocolate and almond roca. I got it with coconut milk because I can't really handle real milk. I liked it and liked that I can still taste the coffee even with a bunch of additives. Rejoice Coffee lovers, Fresno has yet another place other than Kuppa Joy that does caffe latte perfectly and that's because the barista at Cafe Van Ness is from Seattle, coffee capital of USA. If you are a coffee snob like me, you know that a good latte should have latte art, and you would never cover your coffee with the top, because the art needs to be appreciated, if you don't, you just don't understand coffee or appreciate a good one, you are better off buying Starbucks. The latte art is so important because it tells you that the barista took the time to make your drink, and made sure the foam is frothed properly with micro bubbles- this concept is comparable to a chef who takes the time to perfect your meal in comparison to a cook at In and out who's only making a mediocre meal. Its the perfectly frothed milk with micro bubble at the right temperature added to a prefect shot of quality brewed coffee that makes an excellent cup of latte. If you had gone to Starbucks or other coffee places and tried their latte without the art, you can taste the difference in taste and smoothness of the drink in comparison to one that has the latte art. The reason the taste is so rich and refine is because the barista knows whats he or she is doing. The caffe latte is $3.25 here, and the taste of the coffee is just perfect, because the coffee beans used for the espresso shot was perfectly roasted giving it a perfumery coffee smell, with the nice smoothness and perfect temperature from the properly frothed milk. They also offer food offering such as donuts, apple fritters, burritos on sat and Sundays and easy sandwiches. Their drink selection doesn't stop at just latte, they have ice blended coffee, and other coffee favorite you could find at your local starbucks and coffee stores. The interior itself is really rustic chic almost like a french and Italian cafe, perfect for a morning coffee and paper read. Its also a nice place to do work or have a casual meeting. This place is not big, but it isn't crazy crowded so you will find a place to seat either inside or o the patio. The barista is really knowledgable and knows coffee well, she is from Seattle and she knows how to make a good cup of coffee, and she is friendly too. If I had to rate Cafe Van Ness against other coffee shops in Fresno, it would get a solid rating just outside of the "Top 5." However, it's, by far, the best coffee shop in Fresno that's actually open on Sundays. I'm still scratching my head as to why so few cafés are open on Sunday in Fresno, but Cafe Van Ness is, and it's my go-to on that day of the week. The coffee is good (not the most amazing I've ever had, but solid), and there is always lots of parking. It is a *very* cozy cafe, and unless you plan on sitting outside, there are only a couple small tables. It's not exactly the best place to get some work done, but it is a great spot for take-out or take-on-a-stroll through Old Fig Garden! read more

Holy smokes!!! I am in love with this tiny little space. As much as I am going to miss Ooh De Lolli being here... I am soooo glad this little cafe opened up. It is super cute, super chic great atmosphere. This café just opened up less than a week ago and of course I had to come and check it out for myself. I ordered a cappuccino and it did not disappoint me, it was rather delicious! They have a good variety of drinks as well as pastries. They also have a variety of teas here if you are not into the whole coffee thing. The staff is very friendly, very helpful, making you feel very welcomed as soon as you walk in. Which is very important for business. So all you others take notes lol. I love the sitting area inside as well as outside. I must warn you... it is rather tiny but I am looking forward to them expanding more on the outside. This place is going to be a perfect place to come and spend your mornings while reading a book and sipping on a nice warm cup of coffee. I really like that they are open on Sunday's. Our Brown (caramel cinnamon mocha) latte and Simpson (aztec chocolate and blood orange) latte off the Drink Specials menu were both great. They have regular, soy and almond milk available. No reusable mugs, unfortunately. Seating for 6 inside, and another 6 outside. It was a nice day while we were there and neighbors stopped to chit chat to each other in the parking lot. Lurv it. I bookmarked this place because some cyclist on Strava took a selfie here and I was all, "Ok if the cyclists count this as a destination, I'm in!" Then I read others' reviews about weird coffee specials involving blood orange and caramel and eye of newt and I was a wee bit frightened, but already being a coffee antipurist, I declared myself ALL in and went for the Simpson special. It was a smidge on the sweet side, but I somehow mysteriously ended up going back the very next day and requesting a Simpson again, with half the usual chocolate amount, and it was perfect.
